Just be sure you don't buy something from Capcom. We wouldn't want to help support their ridiculous DRM that's prevent people from playing Final Fight and Bionic Commando 2 during this network outage. Remember folks, the internet may be fun but it can't be relied on 24/7. Servers go down, your local ISP can have issues. We should have the right to play games we buy and as consumers we can't let ourselves be saddled with DRM's that will bite us in the butt.

Systems are not toys connected to TVs anymore. They're practically computers. They're online, connected all the time to cloud based information. The attacks will only get worse here on out, and as Sony is realizing, protection from those attacks will have to constantly be upped. As we've seen, it only takes a small group of whiny children to mess things up for an online service. Considering there's always something to complain about when it come to a console maker, expect more things to come with more severity....your XBL included.

I'd rather pay a minimal fee and have some expectations of the service vs not paying and taking my chances.

Ah, but Capcom has good games, but their DRM and locked DLC on disk practices *coughRE5cough* is a tradeoff. Plus, I've got a dozen PS+ games sitting around, staring at me, so I've got plenty to wait for. Also, I think DRMs are in place to ward piracy. We'll never like it, but it'll be there for a while.

It will with that attitude. We're the consumers and we hold all the power and money that the companies want. We vote with our dollars and if we dislike their DRM enough, it won't be there. Other games without intrusive DRM sell just fine, and any business accounts for a certain degree of loss.

Unfortunately I think you're right, because most consumers are lazy or don't care and it's the complacent majority who will ultimately decide the fate of the gaming industry for the rest of us.

"...says the person who assumes this could never happen to anyone but Sony."

This reminds me of when XBox 360 consoles were failing en masse because of RROD.

A few persistent XBox fanboys screamed that no company is immune to hardware failures. They said that since there were reports of YLOD on the PS3, no company could be singled out for hardware issues.

Of course, that was a load of crap. Of the three console manufacturers, Microsoft had the least experience in hardware design. They decided to cut corners on the hardware so that they could offer a lower-priced product at launch. And THAT is the reason why catastophic failures occurred, and Microsoft has a bad product-quality image even after they spent a billion dollars to fix the problem.

No company is immune to network service outages or attacks. But Sony, who has much less experience than Microsoft in providing consumer network services, decided to cut corners so that they could offer the lowest-priced (free) online service. THAT is the reason why Sony is the company than ended up suffering catastrophic failure, and hosting the second largest consumer data breach in Internet history.

No, the reason is because they were attacked by a bunch of idiots who didn't like that Sony took away a feature no one with a modern PC, ever used. I'm kinda sick and tired of people twisting my words to fit their point. Sony is the VICTIM here. Yes, their security was not the best and was rather pathetic, but it doesn't mean that they're the first on the chop block in my eyes. I wasn't trying to show any favoritism like the Xbox fanboys with their RROD, that you brought up. My only point was to say that EVERY console maker out there is most likely all just as easily hackable if there are people motivated to do so. One day, people will be ticked off about something on XBL or w/e Nintendo's new network will be called, and they'll suffer similar outrages.

Unless of course, they take the RIAA approach. People vote with their dollars, and instead of adjusting their business practices they stick their head in the sand and keep whining about pirates, while imposing even more restrictive lockdowns.

@ColorblindMonk Thats such a fanboy response that you'd only hear from Sony fanboy. You guys are so insane you'll support a massive fail by giving them more money. You can think Xbox Live is a rip off but people like you have done nothing but give Sony's balls a tongue bath and now you want to pay them even after they said it probably wont be back until the end of the month. I'll pay my $4 a month and I'm certain XBL is highly unlikely to be hit with this type of attack. You can bet they've beefed up security now after Sony got reamed. Sony fanboys literally are the worst. They should just add "brainwashing" to the "It only does everything" commercials.

I don't think there is enough evidence yet to say that the PSN outage was caused by or contributed to by Sony cutting corners.

This may still turn out to be the type of thing that could have happened to any major company that these hackers could have chosen to attack.

I'm not sure I agree with your idea about "cutting corners", I think it's got more to do with inexperience. From what I've heard, the Xbox suffered hardware failures because they decided to reduce the amount of lead in their components to meet environmentally-friendly component guidelines. The reduction in lead somehow affected heat dissipation, hence RROD.

With Sony, it's the inexperience dealing with network security, and even hardware security - seeing as the PS3 finally got hacked - hence the constant stream of security updates and PSN being down for a month.

However, I think it is commendable what both Microsoft and Sony have been doing to address these issues.

My personal information's at risk with this stunt. I don't care if it could happen to Microsoft; it hasn't. I'm not going to go out and give Sony some more money when they care more about DRM, prosecuting people like geohot, and their RIAA status than protecting their customers' information.

Makes sense for Capcom to be annoyed at a revenue loss.
But, maybe this will create a push for a better DRM system. Something that checks once upon install for a legitimate copy and then does not have to remain on line to recheck.

Better DRM is an oxymoron. Make good games and people will buy them. Sure, there will always be those who download without paying. No DRM will ever stop that. The hackers will always find a way. If you offer something that is so compelling that everyone will WANT to pay for it then that is the most effective "DRM" you can hope for.

My $.02

I agree.
But I don't think any publisher will let go of DRM. It's just not going to happen in a realistic scenario.

So the best we can hope for is that it's unobtrusive.

In my opinion, most people would be too lazy to pirate software anyway if the alternative was very easy. You're always going to have that 1% who will, but they aren't going to buy a product anyway so, you haven't lost any sales there. The majority of the population wants fast and easy and they are willing to trade money for the opportunity.

@Dismissile And the fact is that the only people that can even pirate PSN games are people with jailbroken consoles (and even only a tiny subset of that tiny subset is using CFW with that capability, and probably only a tiny subset of that subset is even doing it), and they'd have to subvert the DRM anyway, since they can't use the regular PSN.

Or we could simply go back to unstandard formats. Ex: Cartriges. Yes, in the long run someone will find a way to crack them. At least it won't be on a standard format (CD/DVD/Blu-Ray) which will prevent the masses using torrents to burn games on to discs from getting illegal copies..

The problem is that Capcom's DRM isn't there to stop piracy, it's there to stop people downloading games to their friends consoles.

My brother bought Final Fight Double Impact thinking that it looked like a decent two player game and then found out that no-one could play it except for him. It is a stupid system that only serves to inconvenience and annoy their own customers.

This will never happen on Xbox, they perfected this last generation. The only reason Sony has an online service is because they saw how profitable it was for Microsoft. Microsoft has implemented all these changes already. Sony was late to the party and now their users are paying for sony's lack of vision. I own both systems and my PS3 is good for movies and exclusives. My Xbox is far superior for gaming. You get what you pay for XBL rocks and it has cross party chat and so many other features it makes my PS3 look and feel like a last generation system.

I know you're just making a joke, but this is a genuine problem.

Actually this whole post reminds me of a couple of annoyances I have. I only got my PS3 back in March. I didn't bother downloading any DLC or bonus content for the games I have cause I figured, hey, I can do it any time. Now I'm rather miffed cause I can't download the "Taxidermist" DLC for Heavy Rain, or the DLC for Uncharted 2, or... well... you get my point. 14 games and I can't buy a single damn addon for any of them. Also Portal 2. I bought that on PS3 over 360 for Steam crossplay. *sigh*

That's Why You Don't Have DRM in your games.. if i had Final Fight Installed i wouldn't be able too play it .. and this is why i think it's a bad idea cause it would just be a sitting Digital Brick. Capcom you haven't been getting my interest for awhile in your games. Final Fight has been the only thing i actually liked and cared about but you had to put a DRM on it. and i thought that was a dirty move tho i know why you did it.

i personally don't care if your losing Money .. you can choke on your DRM and cry about your lost $$$ .. till you take DRM out of gaming AND bring out games worth while then i would start caring again.
