It would be nice if Mortal Kombat was released on the PC at least digitally. It would be easy access for our brothers and sisters who couldn't get the game would be able to do so, something like via Steam.

@Dance Mofo I know this is about Witcher 2 but the mere response of Australian Board and digital ran through my mind regarding MK. Maybe Netherrealm/WBIE should just do a digital download

Is great for those people, but, it is legal?

Yes, it's illegal, and can get you in trouble if you're caught. And, because of those licensing issues, that may give GOG some trouble when they negotiate deals with new publishers who only have the rights in certain places.

That being said, I think this is very cool.

To be fair, proxy services are available in all popular countries so that you can bypass IP-related restrictions (both for digital downloads and for retail items).

While this might make it easier and cheaper for people to bypass the restriction, the fact is that it's never actually possible to stop them (any more than it was possible to stop them ordering a retail game from another country).

So I'd argue (if I were their lawyers) that this is not qualitatively different from the previous situation. Not sure that would wash but :)

Neither is price hiking for no legitimate reason outside of 'licensing issues' that do not exist.

If that were the f%#%ing case...then explain to me exactly what goes on for *EVERY* game release in Australia.

I say terrific! And I hope other companies step in with this type of workaround to combat the damn near tyranny that goes on with gaming over there.

@Dizazter Maybe read the article next time? The service is from poland, they talked about possibilities for Australian consumers, what does the american way have to do with anything? Think before you type.

@Iamdude

I did read it. Maybe if you read my one sentence more than once, you wouldn't have so completely misunderstood it. So let me explain it in detail.

What I was jokingly saying was that "here I thought" the concept of "paying more and getting less" was a uniquely American concept. (health care, social security, etc etc) BUT - it looks like it happens in other countries too, like Australia. Understand now?

So chill man. People on here are like rabid dogs, just looking for the chance to snap at someone.

GOG kind of rubbed me the wrong way when they pulled that "we're going to be gone forever" stunt, but this makes up for it.

makes me want to pre-order from GoG. Just because CDProjekt is sister company with them, and 100% of profits go toward the dev if purchased from GoG.

Speaking of MK, was Sheeva's ending a way Netherrealm decided to get back at Australia? I'll have to research this.

Anyone know if GOG games are Steam compatible? I mean, full integration because I know you can add any game to your Steam library but not all of them will support Achievements and all that jazz

I'm pretty sure if you want that you'll have to buy it through Steam, since the game sends certain keys to Steam to tell it to unlock such things.Seems to me the non-Steam version wouldn't know to do that.

Well, maybe, but I know that the humble bundle, for example, came with a Steam activation key. Wonder if GoG does the same.
I like having my games all in one place,

There's the other main issue that the GOG version is drm free while the steam version says it will contain securom as well.

@blueskyv201 Since integrating with steam would require that the game have Steam's DRM, and GOG sells all of their games DRM-free, it won't integrate, no.

lol between their commitment to stay true to their games and this, I'm liking these guys more and more. I loved the witcher, if tw2 lives up to the hype I might have to escalate myself to fanboy status.

I was wondering what the REAL reason behind this was. "It's not always accurate" is a pretty lame excuse because 99% of the time it's going to be. Changing a website based on IP autodetect is a pretty nifty and logical feature.

The fact that they have to sell Witcher 2 censored and more expensively to Australians makes this all make sense now. Tricky... and a bit sketchy, but these Polish companies always like to work on the dodgy side of things.

I believe every online game company should do this. If one person wants to buy a game, they should have the right to do it no matter where they live.

Both GOG and Steam offer games for people around the globe, which is good for then (they make money) and for us (we play games at normal price instead of crazy-expensive imports).

Meanwhile other online stores, for reasons beyond my understanding, track our IP just to make sure you can't PAY for a game. Go figure.
