Battle Chess checking in to PC, iOS - get pawned this summer
28
Interplay's classic Battle Chess will return in a reboot this summer for PC and iOS. Developed by Subdued Software, the PC version is expected to make moves in August, with the iOS versions for iPad and iPhone available "soon after." A company rep informs us that they only have screens of the game currently available, but will show off some character battle animations next month.
The title will be digitally distributed and feature scalable AI, multiplayer and scenario challenges. It will also have a "combat vault," allowing players to view fights from different angles. Battle Chess should not be confused with the similarly titled, injunction inducing Battle vs. Chess.

Does anyone remember the original Battle Chess? Anyone remember how brutally violent and ridiculous some of the animations were? I keep hoping with these newer versions they'll bring some of that back, but I'm guessing they want it more family friendly.

@WiredKnight
Yeah, actually this just brought it back to mind: there used to be a computer shop on the way to school and they had the Amiga version of Battle Chess running in attract mode; we'd stop and watch it for a bit just to see the cool animations.
I think even then, though, I realised that basically the game was, you know, just chess and not something I'd have considered buying (even if I'd had an Amiga). Same still applies. :)

The original Battle Chess was cool, and I was just thinking about it the other day for some reason, wondering why it wasn't available for any system anymore. Seems like a no-brainer to keep around.
And speaking of Battle Chess, it's too bad they don't consider re-releasing Archon The Light and the Dark.

Yes! I loved the first one so much. Pretty much the first ever PC game I played and the over the top animations were classic. Didn't the knight do a Monty Python-esque Holy Grail thing when his limbs were chopped off?? Definitely getting this.

I'm hoping they make it as funny as they can. I'd be completely in love with just a HD port of the original I could play on my iPad ... played a ton of this on my 286 when I was a kid and these screens look a little too stodgy and realistic. I can remember a lot of the fights, and I'm disappointed the rook isn't a transforming castle monster that can stomp the pawns into a football. Guys, if you are reading this, show some nostalgia and we will worship you. That bishop looks way too serious to me and the king doesn't look like he's going to have the humor either.
I also should say that BattleChess 4000 was also hilarious. The attempts at realistic BC -- the one that came on the interplay box set -- wasn't very good. The pawns were hilarious, and they had some really good animations in BC4000 -- like the Rook and the little pawn aliens that made the slurpy noises.
Those slurpy noises were awesome.

@Subdued01 excellent, glad to hear it.
BTW, castle monster. Also, I'm pretty sure you're not doing it, but make sure the fights do actually show the other characters on the board, it would be easy to just make them animations but that sort of takes you out of it. I'm just mentioning it because it looks like no one is behind the rook.

Haha, I loved the original game on the good old Amiga 500 about... 20 years ago?
But I'm a little older now, and the games market has grown a little bit since then. So I'm not that thrilled about the rerelease of the game...

It says PC, but I wonder if that means they're doing a Mac version. I have many childhood memories playing the black and white Battle Chess on my school lab's Macintoshes back in the day... good times.
If it's on iOS, it should be a short stretch to bring to OSX, since they're both based on similar Unix kernels and OpenGL 3D.
