This new Dark Souls trailer (past the break) closes the previous launch window ever so slightly: to October 2011. In addition to the revelation of a more specific release date is the realization of horrible homicide. Seriously, dude dies in this trailer. Like, a lot.
It's not like we didn't expect as much -- this is the Demon's Soulssuccessor, after all -- but watching this trailer makes us feel all funny inside. It's like falling asleep with Saw on the TV.
Still a ways off, but I'm pretty excited. Probably the retail game I'm looking forward to most this year (Although I'm still cautiously anticipating L.A. Noire).
@Acosta02 Yea the way Rockstar has been going so far this console generation(and last) they have been pumping nothing but AAA titles so I don't think we have to worry its going to be good. Also I cannot wait to play LA Noire i love detective game and was a big fan of Indigo Prophecy.
Im afraid Im not. I mean, its not the same when it doesnt say Demons Soul in it and thiw whole pretending, "its not a sequel but we know you know it actually is", I cant help not to feel betrayed by this guys.
Its not exactly a matter of exclusivity what Im talking about here.
If you actually look at the trailer you can see at the 0:50 second mark that there are 2 other "souls" there with you as the dragon breathes fire... Just like it was in Demon's Souls (3 player co-op from the looks of it).
@Kronos174 I believe he means 'normal cooperative' as in his friends off his list. Demons Souls didn't let you play with your friends, you played with a group of cloud players who you have to interactive with indirectly through the tools given to you i.e. you couldn't type to them or voice chat. You didn't ever need to even involve these people, but their ghosts would run around your game while you played.
So if he wants to play with his friends, he can most certainly forget it. The feature of random, vague souls you sometimes work with or against is what set the first game out other than the unforgiving gameplay that was painful and rewarding. They aren't going to simply make it standard co-op, and relegate that part of their unique style away into the same old RPG co-op of many a generic title.
@Lucky48 I disagree. The Demons Souls system was part of what made the game so unique. If it's just another co-op RPG, it loses a lot of the dark, alone atmosphere that makes it so great.
Trust me, they know what sold their first game, and that is what they'll continue with this one. Not catering to the masses, but to the hardcore and to their vision, is what made the first so good. You start throwing in direct co-op, then you'll have to throw in easier modes, tutorials, cheap ways to beat bosses, forgiving combat, etc etc. Before you know it, you've got an old generic RPG. That isn't what Demons Souls and Dark Souls are about.
I never had any problems playing DS with friends. Its true that there is no invite system (something that should be implemented this time around I would assume) but all I had to do was coordinate with someone where to place the spawning thingamajig (forgot the terms, sorry) and then summon him to your game. Never had any issues.
@Kronos174 Creative use of mechanics, which is perfectly fine, though I'd feel like cheating to use voice chat. The random players made it better for me anyways, because you were working in this damned world with unpredictable strangers in order to overcome the obstacles.
@ORTHROK To each his own. If you didn't like Demons Souls, DO NOT buy Dark Souls. It's more of the same, and even more brutally hard.
These games were not meant to please everyone, and they certainly aren't going to change the style and make themselves another generic RPG to please you or any others who disliked it.
If they did that they'd lose their original fans. Unlike CoD or Halo, the developers behind this aren't after a cash grab to get the mass market involved. They make it the way they vision it, so either enjoy it or don't bother.
I will definitely get those later on, but not at launch. New games cost about $110 in my country so I never buy new, full-priced games. Those pre-orders are all from trading in older games.
The only hope the game had was to beat the Q4 releases to the punch. September may have been more advantageous, but October is certainly better than November.
I hope this game sells well enough to warrant sequels. Demon Souls may be my favorite new IP of this generation (that has yet to be sequel-itised into the ground).
It's going to be hard to pull myself away from this to play Skyrim. If Diablo III makes it for a 2011 launch, I may just have to quit school and dedicate myself to games like a monk would dedicate himself to prayer.
@SMTDante, i only played Demon Souls for about 35 hours before something came along and distracted me, but I really didn't feel like I died all that often. But when I did die, OOOOOOH was I pissed. Especially when I died during a boss and would have to run all the way back through the level just to get back into the boss so I could recover my souls and hopefully not die. Of course, if I died on the way........ makes me angry just thinking about it. My girlfriend is going to hate me when I play this... I can't wait
