Star Raiders launch on XBLA this Wednesday

Major Nelson has tweeted that Star Raiders will arrive on Xbox Live Arcade this week. Based on the Atari 800 title of the same name, the new version was developed by Incinerator Studios. Like the original, Star Raiders focuses on galactic navigation and dogfights. It also comes packing multiplayer modes, so space combat fans may want to keep their eyes on it.

I wonder if Michael Vick will be allowed to play this game.

God what I wouldn't give for a good console space combat game. Really wish Colony Wars would get rebooted.

No joke. I miss Colony Wars so much. That little side mission in Halo Reach only reminded me of how awesome a current gen space combat game could be.

Hopefully this is good as there are what only 2-3 space fighters on the consoles? I can only think of two: darkstar one and project silpheed...neither are very good. If this is good I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

Hold on! I played Star Raiders on the 2600.

@JonahFalcon Star Raiders was in fact available for the 2600, but it was a poor port of the 400/800 version.

@pmiddy Actually, I prefered Activision's Starmaster on the 2600, and THAT kicked serious ass. :)

@JonahFalcon Starmaster was awesome, I remember playing that a lot back in the day. Don't know why devs stopped making space games, but if this is any good I might finally have to give in and get an Xbox like my friends have been nagging me to.

@JonahFalcon Yeah, I think I played it on 2600, too. Wasn't it the one that came with its own keypad controller?

The 5200 version (same as the computer version) was vastly superior to the 2600 version. I'm wary of this new title...what little I've seen of it looks nothing like the original. Hope it turns out well, Star Raiders was my favorite game from the pre-NES era.

When is Lucasarts going to get off their ass and make a true X-wing/TIE FIghter game again?

@Edge of Blade - I still have the joystick I bought to play that game. Aaah memories.

Looking at that screen, I am really getting a Macross/Robotech GERWALK-mode vibe. Might be cool. But, I still need to beat Project Sylpheed and Darkstar One: Broken Alliance.

On topic: this game looks kind of awesome. If it's any good as a space combat game I'll download it in an instant.
Off topic: HOLY CRAP I can't remember the name of this space flight game I played and I will like, pay someone money to help me remember the name. It came out in 1999 (I think) and it was a kind of space flight game, but it also let you, like, buy houses and sell minerals and things. I think it was some sort of space colony scenario. I also remember everything being draped in a kind of red mist. I poured so much time into that game! It was really, really awesome, too!
Obligatory comment: Freespace 3 please and thanks.

@TRONdll - wow, that one wasn't the one but that was an awesome game too. Kudos to you, sir/madame.
Additional info: it took place just above the surface of a planet, and also maybe it was a little older than I'm remembering. Also, I'm pretty sure it was from a third-person perspective.

As long as I'm still allowed to blow up those space gas stations and leave the gas jockey wandering alone in space... I'll consider this a true succesor.

joystiq is wrong it says nothing about multiplayer any where or in the game itself just leaderboards
