So they're basically the mercenaries from Diablo 2?

I think it'll be closer to the Hero system in Guild Wars

@SecondTomorrow A bit more advanced seems.
How will you find the followers?
Players will encounter the followers in the world during their journey through Sanctuary. Each follower is a part of the main story arc and has a different story and background. Players will feel that followers have a role in the world; that they're in Sanctuary fighting evil alongside the heroes.

Each follower has his or her own introductory quest where players learn a little bit about who each one is and where they come from. We don't want players to encounter them and feel obligated to do some task for them so they like you -- it's more that you’ll encounter them and they fight alongside you and you gain each other's trust. They're on the same path that you are; they're other adventurers that you encounter as you battle through Sanctuary. Followers don't divert from the main story path, they're an integral part of it.

Weird. I'm more excited for the Followers classes than the ones in the game. Scoundrel and Templar? Why the heck are these characters not in the game? I realize that Scoundrel is just a male Demon Hunter, but still... the sheer look is everything I wanted and more...

Let me put it this way. The Scoundrel looks like he's going to beat you to tears. The male demon hunter looks like he's going to cry about his parents to you. Badass Longcoat for the win!

This was a feature of Diablo 2 that I was hoping they would leave out of D3 because the followers/hirelings died a lot and were expensive to resurrect at higher levels. If they are too strong then the game is easy. If they are too weak then you don't want to use them. I hope they implement the feature better this time.

I like how unscrupulous the Scoundrel looks. Enchantress looks ok. I don't like that the Templar bought his shoulder armor from the WoW auction house. (Hey monsters, just attack him from the side. He won't see you.)

Maybe the world minions will get stronger based on your followers too?

@DeadInside it was a poorly implemented feature in d2 that no one used. looks like they have taken some pretty significant steps toward making followers more useful this time.

@Aberhams No one used? You must have not played the game very much to say that. There are entire builds based on mercenaries, particularly act 2 mercenaries who were the most widely used, and their equipment. Specifically an ethereal infinity polearm, like the lightning sorc or trap sin, classes that would otherwise have a lot of trouble because of immunes in hell. Additionally stacking auras on the mercs made them pretty godly, and essential for other classes like the summoner necro.

Summoner necro + merc with might + infinity polearm = ownage.

@DeadInside If you found mercs in Diablo 2 useless, you weren't using them properly.

Dang, at 720p, this footage does not look great. A lot of the details (especially the bushes and that tree guy at the end) don't look great. I feel like even a lot of the stuff in Starcraft 2 looks better...

Well they still have 5 years before it's released so don't get ahead of yourself.

Starcraft 2 went through a massive overhaul on its models and textures as it neared release, I imagine the same thing will happen to Diablo 3.

@Yojimb0 This game won't have state of the art graphics, it does have a lot of style though and that's all we care about.

@Yojimb0 It's because of the art direction. Compare much of the environmental assets to early WoW and it looks amazingly similar. It also has to do with color choices that don't allow for certain features to pop.

Which has been my only complaint about the game since the reveal. Diablo has always used color to denote power and effects. Now everything is colorful and, as a result, everything sort of blends in together.

@hensothor And... the style has been done before, many times in other games, most of which have been flops. Loki is a notable example. Ever played it? It's impossible to figure out what's going on.

This video looks like a whole bunch of bad capture -- like Torchligh'ts "netbook" setting was used. Previous D3 videos looked crisp and quite beautiful. Perhaps this "leaked" video is a work in progress that still has placeholder shots edited in?

Totally. I'd rather play a Templar than any of the standard classes. I miss the Paladin something fierce.

The standard classes do nothing for me.
