Tales of counterfeit DS games are nothing new, but 1UP's Jeremy Parish believes he's come across a counterfeit DS Lite. With the news that the handheld will soon disappear from retail shelves, Parish set about procuring an Apple Green unit. Ordering what appeared to be a legitimate system from a reputable eBay seller, Parish received the unit weeks later only to discover several small but significant flaws ranging from misaligned text to a warped GBA slot.
The verdict: this was not a stock Nintendo DS Lite, though it does play DS and GBA games with no problems. While Parish believed it to be a complete counterfeit, some 1UP readers have pointed out that it could simply be a broken DS that someone repaired, outfitted with an aftermarket replacement shell and sold as new. Either way, let the story stand as a warning to anyone looking to procure a DS Lite as its lifespan comes to a close.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze There was an official Nintendo version of the DS Lite that was that color but it was very limited. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/premium-quality-full-replacement-housing-case-for-nds-lite-green-14288 this is a comparable case (Might even be the exact one) shown above but bear in mind the case mod is not an easy change out and it is very easy to damage the unit doing the mod i broke the touch screen on the second unit i did.
Here is a guide on disassembly/reassembly http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=98240
If your DS is in fine working order i would forgo the change as the case is pretty good quality but no where near the original Nintendo quality but if you DS is broken this is a great fix. If you do do the mod will you want to use as much of the original parts as you can. The site dealextreme has more replacement cases in different colors but ive only used the lime green and a camo one, the lime was much better quality than the camo so they can be a mixed bag when it comes to quality.

@asherdeus I think there was this color produced as a package with cooking software. Saw it at a thrift store once, wish I bought it.

The main thing to check for is where you buy from, when you see the seller is anywhere in Asia you need to double check the stuff.
Nothing against the sellers, they ship you your stuff but you'll sometimes end up with bootlegs. Friend bought chrono trigger for DS and sure enough it turned out to be a bootleg.

Local sellers can be problems too. I bought The Sopranos box set from a local seller and it turned out to be the bootleg box set.
Checking seller reviews and, if possible, who and where the reviews are coming from and what they're saying is the crucial point.

I'm very skeptical about buying movies/TV shows from ebay, the last one that I got was bootleg even though on the product description was saying "original/no bootleg copy", come on guys, if you're a selling bootleg stuff, don't say anything. I got that for give as a present, so I compared with the original I had and you can clearly see the box was a shitty one and the cover was printed on a very bad copy machine. After that day, I only buy from Amazon.

I thought that initially as well, but then I realized that Japan's got a crap-ton of colors on just about every console made... things we wouldn't normally see unless we went to Japan. (It wouldn't be too hard to find out the color schemes, though through a search.) That said.... I think that DS color is a creepy sort of "strained pea baby shit" green. Of course if baby shit's shiny, mom needs to take baby to the doctor. :)
I remember the Orange Gamecubes and thought "someone's feeding Mario too many strained carrots."

Of course they have green DS lites:
http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-DS-Spring-Bundle-Personal-Trainer/dp/B001TOMR4S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305174584&sr=8-1
Its like exactly the same color.
Also, he actually shouldn't have any risks if he bought from ebay/ paid with paypal. He should be able to get his money back. So yeah, there really weren't any risks to be aware of.

Why even go as far as Japan?

I've seen green DS systems in stores in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands so far.

It has to be a repaired system in an after market case. The processing power required for full DS and GBA emulation just isn't there on any handheld unit I know of.

I was wondering the same thing, because the box itself is green as well... perhaps from the aforementioned (in another reply) lime green Japanese DS. :)

Haha. Some people do that, selling refurbished stuff as brand new. I hope the buyer wasn't ripped off on the price he payed. Refurbished items should be cheaper unless of course it's a collector's edition or something. haha.

eBay is rife with Asian knock offs, surprisingly coming from...GASP! Asia! eBay makes a killing in fees off Asian knock offs - I know, I have a white PS3 knock off controller that looks identical - and they don't bother to shut them down, preferring to stand by the motto "Buyer Beware". If you see an item you want from a seller in Asia and it's a great price, don't buy it. It's not real. Unless it is. But 60% of the time, it's a fake ALL the time.

I hope that's later rather than sooner. Going from 18+ hours to 3 is not cool with me.
