the fact that Treasure is handling this in cooperation with Sega makes me very happy, indeed. like their previous port (Ikaruga)- i'm sure this will be a wonderful port and i hope everyone will support this game with a purchase on release day. i can't wait!

The graphics look great, what's this against smoothed sprites?

@bshido Good question. Loved the original, and I can't wait to play the new revamped version, smoothing and all on.

I think it can be more contributed to people who feel things can never be changed for the better.

I have to disagree. I've played plenty of HD remkes this gen, and this is the first one where I am not at all a fan of the new graphics. Hell, I've never even played the first one, so I have nothing to compare them to! But I mean, check out the images in the gallery...

Look at that! To me I can think of no better description for this other than "Straight-up goofy." The way the bodies are proportioned in this game is already questionable, but when you just start slapping on filters to avoid doing work it's going to come out awkward and... well, like this.

@bshido

I have to say that I have yet to play a game with smoothing enabled that doesn't make the game look like poody.

Such an awesome game. I still have the original along with my Sega Saturn and break it out from time to time. There are so many branching paths, endings and storylines it borders on the ridiculous. Not to mention you could play as every character in the game in the arena battle mode.

I bought this game for $120 off eBay 5 years ago and it was worth every penny. I don't care if it becomes worthless now because the greater good has been served; everyone can enjoy this masterpiece.

At least, everyone with a 360.

I still maintain that keeping your levels and experience through multiple playthroughs (a-la Castle Crashers) is something they should also add to the port. It's my recollection that this wasn't featured in the original Saturn game, and felt it sort of defeated the purpose of having level stats if you were just going to lose them every time you started over...

@Freakservo

You're correct, I think in the original it just added a feeling of improvement and getting stronger rather than a solid levelling system. I imagine it also let them introduce more powerful enemies without it being super harsh.

I'd agree, keeping your level would probably be a bit more fun. Loved the original, still occasionally break it out. The amount of endings is crazy, I don't think I've done them all!

@Sir Biccy Just another example of the game's near-perfection that you point out, sir. Even I never seen all of the endings...or if I have, I certainly don't remember all of them. We are talking well over a dozen years ago, here.

But just another reason to consider stat-carryovers. It would be pretty awesome to bring your powerful bad self across the different paths. That feeling of picking off the early-level baddies like flies does offer the feeling that you are, in fact, getting stronger...like New Game+ In Chrono Trigger or the 'instant-kills' when your visit earlier areas in Earthbound.

@SEGA Scream S-Video? Well, aren't you a lofty videophile!

Seriously though, you don't gain an appreciation for CRTs until you've played an older console on an HD set. I should've kept my old Standard-Def for such cases...

I hope they're at least going to put in some high-res textures. Those old background textures look like shit. And personally, I'd rather have the smoothing on. Upscaling sprites meant for a 320x240 display does not equal HD resolution, no matter how they try to spin it.

Guardian Heroes was great because it was silly fun. It was a pixellated mess and wasn't balanced very well but it was still playable. Heck, it was probably better *because* of its flaws.

To whoever is porting this, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Magic effects need to still be contagious. It was always so much fun to throw a fireball above an enemy, have it boomerang back and hit them, catch them on fire bouncing into you and having *you* catch on fire because of it.

I would say to not even try to balance the arena but I will just say to have a mode where you can pick only the 'normal' characters, a mode where your character gets randomly assigned, and a mode where you can pick whatever you want like in the original game. There better not be some BS achievement where you have to beat a bunch of player controlled dragons using only the old man whose only attack is coughing.

Please please please let us switch between the new voices and the old corny ones! I know I'm not the only one who has immense fondness for hearing Nicole shout BAREEAAAH.

Remember, for some of us we are going to be purchasing this simply for the ease of not grabbing the Saturn out... and the reason we'd do that is nostalgia.
