El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron screens explore new (but still bizarre) locales
31
In a missive late this week from UTV Ignition, a handful of new screens for El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron were revealed. Among the shots are locations not yet seen in the game's pseudo-religious world, depicting the game's protagonist Enoch on his journey up the Tower of Babel through varying degrees of surrealist world design.
If that weren't enough, a whole mess of photos from El Shaddai's Japanese launch event this past week were also included. Yes, that means there are at least a few scantily clad models repping the game in the gallery below, but it also means you get another look at those incredible designer jeans. And who could say no to that?

It still looks awesome

@10169154 While it looks awesome, and the gameplay seems quite intuitive, I just can't get passed the whole Christian thing in it.
Not overly into Christian mythology nor do I care for it being used as a story telling device. The problem I always find with using religion is that if you deviate from the beliefs of the majority the game gets slammed so few developers ever stray from the prescribed "god is good, be a good Christian to be saved" story.
Here's hoping this one doesn't.

@sortius Hello, my name is Neon Genesis Evangelion, and I would like to attempt to change your mind - you should watch me.

@sortius What exactly is the "Christian thing" in it? The Book of Enoch isn't even part of the bible, or in any way part of the Christian belief system. Even offering it any recognition at all pretty much "deviates from the beliefs of the majority;" it's considered by Christianity (outside of very narrow sects of Oriental Orthodoxy) to be an apocryphal text, and not given much credence.

@sortius Seems weird to start caring after decades of games based on other Mythologies

The game has Jewish influences, not Christian. I haven't read anything about this game that would lead me to believe there is any overt (or subvert) christian symbolism in it. All the character and place names I've seen are from the Jewish scriptures.
oh, and "god is good, be a good Christian to be saved" is NOT the Christian story. I'm sorry you've been told that.

Neon Genesis Evangelion does have some interesting Christian parallels (even the basic story is a kind of a Christian metaphor - a father sending his son to save the world) - although from what I've read they weren't chosen because of any desire to communicate anything Christian.

A breath of fresh air in an era of muddy, washed out, greyish-brown FPS games.

I don't know if it's still up or not, but I managed to snag the demo from the Japanese PSN store. The game is like a cross between God of War and Okami. Game play wise, it's GOW, but stylistically it's Okami.

How much GOW-like? Is it QTE heavy? How's the pace (slow/fast)?

That's good. I prefer Devil May Cry's combat anyway. I might get this if it get released in NA.
And the first DMC really was revolutionary. I think David Jaffe is a fan, too. It's a shame it's place in gaming history often gets overlooked.

Yeah.
Because that's the reason that the Devil May Cry series became less popular than God of War.
It had nothing to do with the shocking disparity in quality between the amazing DMC3 and that horribly lame shit that Capcom tried to pass off as DMC4.
Seriously, though...you really think God of War overtook Devil May Cry in terms of mindshare because of fifteen seconds of digital nipples?
I'm calling "derp" on that one.

I think this will be amazing, whether you believe in religious materials or not, they have some amazing inspiration for some badass games. I am waiting for a GoW style game where you play as Sampson lol.

I think we need more games that look like this.
Or maybe not like this, but at least stylized in some way. Too many games focus on being "realistic"

I played the demo on Xbox from the JPN marketplace. Art style was great, gameplay wasn't. Look for it in the bargain bin a few weeks after release.

@Cuddlefish
It probably will be in the bargain bin after not very long... but not because it's a bad game, which I really doubt it will be.
It will most likely be in there because no one will buy it.
This game, I just can't see selling well here. A large majority of those NA gamers play those lame, fps's. And that's it.
The gameplay, while it wasn't amazing, I could see progressing quite well. It was fairly fluid, it felt nice, you could hold the button for a charge!
So... it was in no way what one may consider "bad."
The game looked great too.
Though, aside from that, all I really hope for is story.

The word "Metatron" leapt out of the screen and I thought it was a Zone of The Enders 3 announcement.
The disappointment stings.

Did anyone noticed the gratuitous amount of cartoon vagina in the last picture of the Japanese launch gallery?

I dunno if I have enough hallucinogens for this release. I've been stockpiling ever since the first announcement.
