PlayStation Network coming online throughout North America

Sony has accomplished what Al Gore is still working on -- America has gone green. That means PlayStation Network should be in the process of coming back online in your state, just in time for you to turn on all your LCD televisions, 7.1 surround sound systems and high-powered consoles, and get back to saving a virtual representation of the planet.

Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold, notes that it may take some time before servers are populated to the max, so don't panic if you can't access PSN immediately. The first phase of network restoration includes online play, Qriocity, video streaming, friend list functionality and PlayStation Home. The PlayStation Store is still out of commission.

Once signed in, you should be able to change your password, link that copy of Portal 2 to Steam, sync your Trophies and then sink some time into your multiplayer games. Hello, Sunday!

Little known fact: If you havent redeemed your MK online pass thru the Playstation store prior to the PSN outage, you actually can't play online... as PS store is still down.

You can redeem your Portal 2 copy, in case anyone's interested. I'm sure it was pretty obvious from the start, but hey, information is information. And information is power. And the power is yours.

Have you actually tried to activate Mortal Kombat? I know I wondered the same thing, I have two games here with online passes still to be activated, but I've read somewhere in the PS blog that the first phase of restoration would bring online gaming back, "including those games with online verification". I would take that to mean online passes would be activated outside the Store now. But since PSN isn't back yet in my region, I don't rightly know.

He is correct. I tried redeeming my MK Online Pass through the game menu instead of the store just for the hell of it, and it didn't work. "including those games with online verification" would mean those that require verification, but your pass was already redeemed prior to PSN being taken down. If you didn't have a chance to redeem it yet, like probably 95% of Mortal Kombat owners, you'll have to wait another few days for the store to come back up.

What that is referencing are those few games from Capcom that are single player but require you to be online in order to play. To my knowledge there is no way to redeem any codes without using the store, meaning those with Mortal Kombat that did not redeem the code before the outage are still not able to play.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it already (I'm too lazy to scroll through all these posts!), but you can activate the free 2-day pass to play online. It's not much, but at least you can spend your Sunday and Monday Mortal Kombat-ing. Fingers crossed they have the store working within two days though :S

That's what I did and getting all I can until the store comes back up.

But they really need to patch their online play. It's so damn laggy.

Honestly, due to school just ending I've been on my PS3 more then anything right now trying to finish up PS2 games. I kinda forgot about the whole PSN being down part.

I had to reformat my PS3 during the outage, and now I can't sign back in. Tried to do a password reset (both through the PS3 and through the PlayStation website) but the e-mails don't seem to be going through. Anyone else having a similar issue?
