Capcom posts Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition FAQ
47
With the release of the Super Street Fighter 4 "Arcade Edition" DLC upgrade less than a month away -- the retail version will follow on June 28 -- there are some burning questions that must be answered. Capcom has heard the call and clarified several details in a new FAQ.
First and foremost, the full Arcade Edition update will comprise several downloads. Beginning on June 7, an an automatic update will be released to prepare your console or PC for the new content. Then, players choose between purchasing the Arcade add-on or installing the free "Update Kit." The Update Kit will allow vanilla SSF4 players to participate in matchmaking with Arcade Edition owners and will also allow them to spectate Arcade Edition matches. However, those using the Update Kit will not be able to play as or against any of the new characters, and all matches played will default to the original SSF4 character balance.
Additionally, Arcade Edition purchasers will have the option to play with the original character balance, though doing so will disable the new fighters. Head over to Capcom-Unity for more answers.

I read somewhere that Capcom said it is possible to patch it into SSFIV3D if enough people ask. Might have been on Joystiq.
Either way I would really like to see this on the 3DS as well.

I'm... not sure I agree with their handling of this. It feels like they're trying to bully everyone into upgrading to AE by not allowing them to play against the new characters.

@Acosta02 Yeah that's a good point, but at the same time, it seems like it'd make more sense for the free download version to at least allow other players to see them, rather than separate the player base into "AE" and "SS". It just strikes me as an odd thing to do.

Hmmm, I think that IS what it's doing? AE players CAN see Super players, and can choose to matchmake with them (with the understanding that they will have to play by Super rules).
To use my earlier example, when I boot up Brood War, it gives me the option to play with Starcraft vanilla units/rules. I hope that helps; I THINK that's what you meant?

@Acosta02 Nah, what I mean is that, in this case, I don't see the harm in applying the "look but don't touch" approach that Blazbue employed for a while when it came to the DLC characters. I feel it was necessary for Brood War, but no so much here.

OHHHH, GOTCHA! I like that system, but I guess the idea is that some people might want to stay on Super. Capcom doesn't want the new characters fighting against the other characters without the proper balancing, so I guess that's why they don't let you do it. In Blazblue, even though the characters are new, the balance system is universal.
I don't PERSONALLY like Capcom's system because what's the point of honoring the balance system if it's... well, not balanced? But Capcom wants to give people the freedom to stay on Super, I suppose, so more power to them?

Perhaps you aren't familiar with "the 90s"
Street Fighter 2
Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition / Street Fighter 2'
Street Fighter 2 Turbo Hyper Fighting / Street Fighter 2 X
Super Street Fighter 2
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo / Super Street Fighter 2 X
Hyper Street Fighter 2 (Although technically this one didn't come out in the 90s.)

@brettjr25 CE was a separate game from Turbo in the Arcade.
Special Champion Edition and Turbo were pretty much the same though.

Champion Edition was the second arcade release & allowed you to play the bosses & same character vs character with little other change beyond some bugs/glitches. It was also a separate release on consoles, as original Street fighter 2 (without bosses/samevsame) was initially released before CE/turbo.

If you want to entice SSF4 players to purchase the new content let them fight against the new characters, but don't let them pick the new characters.
Capcom is doing the opposite of what I expect a business to do in this situation.

@Lerkero The update changes the build of the game to match the new AE version which allows Super only folk to play against AE owners. This free update includes improvements to the replay channel which will allow Super owners to watch replays and such with the new characters.
You have to keep the versions separate because AE is not just new characters there are many changes to all the Super cast. They would piss off Super users who didn't want to buy if they forced them to play with the new AE character tweaks.

so what's the point of downloading the update kit?
If I can't fight the new characters, or use the new AE balancing, then what's the point?
I'm downloading updates for AE to not be able to play AE at all? I understand they want us to buy AE but the free Update Kit is 100% worthless.

The update kit lets you match up with people who have arcade edition. For example, one of my friends is hardcore into SFIV and will definitely buy the DLC. The other likes it, but doesn't like paying for new iterations. They can now play online together, something that they constantly bitched about not being able to do before.

That's still worthless to download for Super users. I don't even get why Super users don't get the stat adjustments. That should be free.

And they could do it BB style where you can choose which version freely you want to use. Like if I hated the second patch for BB I can choose to play without it online and offline.
Honestly there is no reason to pay for stat adjustments.

Getting really annoying with these mandatory downloads. If someone isn't buying the DLC why make them download?
I think someone at CAPCOM is running out of hard disk space and is just using this as an excuse to store stuff on peoples consoles.

I was about to buy Super Street Fighter IV for a low sale price, but I'm wondering, would it be better to just wait to buy the Arcade Editon? I already have the game on 3DS, but I want it on PS3, too. Plus, I prefer physical media, so....

@TCJJ - I'm in the same boat as you. Was about to grab it, but now I'm thinking I'll just wait for SSAE to drop to a super deal price instead. Of course, by then there'll probably be another edition and I'll never end up with any of them...

Meh, I hate the new Evil Ryu's design. I know some people are huge SF nuts, but this AE contains two overpowered versions of characters that have been in previous games anyway and two characters from 3 most people generally despise.
Tell me why this is even worth getting again?

Well, since there isn't a PC version of SSFIV, I guess you can strike out the "or PC" in that sentence? The Capcom FAQ doesn't really deal with the PC Version, but it states that "the PC version of AE will not be compatible with the PC version of SFIV, same as the consoles.". So I guess there won't be an option to upgrade the PC version via DLC.
