Gotham City Impostors shooting up XBLA, PSN, PC courtesy of Monolith Productions

Just announced at this morning's Warner Bros. Interactive pre-E3 event, the long-rumored Gotham City Impostors is a new shooter from F.E.A.R. dev Monolith Productions. It's a multiplayer shooter set in the Batman universe. If that sounds weird ("But Batman doesn't use guns!"), then you're a step ahead of the curve.

The crux of Impostors is simple: You don't play as Batman or Joker. Instead you play as a highly customizable "imposter" on Team Bats or Team Jokers. "Posing as amateur vigilantes or villains," explains the press release, "gamers will create their very own Bats and Jokerz characters using unprecedented customization options including insane costumes, homebrewed gadgets and a wide range of traditional and imagined weapons." From there, you'll take your character into a series of gametypes and maps, which are "inspired by DC Comics' Batman license."

Impostors is being shown running 4v4 multiplayer at today's preview event, but WBIE tells us that the maximum number of players isn't yet set in stone.

Monolith Productions should of been doing Fear 3. :(

@Faenix Absolutely agreed. I had it pre-ordered, but I'm canceling it because everything I've seen of the gameplay recently looks mediocre. Wish Monolith were developing it, that's for sure.

Never mind, They just added more to the description, explaining that it is.

My initial impression is that it's a cut-rate shooter that can't stand on its own legs so they had to slap on some poorly concieved skins to sell it. Very little info here though, so I could be wrong.

Very surprised that they're making a game based on such a weak Detective Comics arc (http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Imposters-David-Hine/dp/1401231446). It's an ok conceit for a shooter, but I'm skeptical. Hope we can see some gameplay soon.

The idea sounds like something that would suck ass but Monolith are actually good. So I'll take 'wait and see' approach to this one.

Actually, Batman did use guns in some his early adventures. His refusal to use firearms is a more modern principle, which he famously violated in order to kill Darkseid in Final Crisis.

Maybe I am missing the joke but is there any reason this article misspelled impostor a few times?

The logo is right there with 2 O's and they used imposter a bunch of times.

The costume customization thing grabbed my interest even though it will probably suck. There have been some cool stories with alternate batman costumes (not worn by Bruce). Brotherhood of the Bat which was an old elseworlds story and the newer Battle for the Cowl which has the badass Jason Todd two-gun batman and a Two-Face batman.
