Next Total War in development at The Creative Assembly

Total War developer The Creative Assembly is hard at work on the next installment of the strategy franchise. Eurogamer confirmed with Studio Director Tim Heaton that work began on the next installment while the studio was finishing Total War: Shogun 2. "Absolutely, we're on the next," said Heaton.
Sega recently announced that Total War: Shogun 2 sold 600,000 copies. Creative Assembly's Mike Simpson said the series has a "long tail" and that the original Shogun sold "more copies in the second three years of its existence than it did in its first three years." Of course, that wasn't at full price. There's no word yet which period of history (or future) the next game will be set in.

Have to say I'm much more interested in where they take the series next. I find Japanese settings in video games a bit cliche.

@AMonkey have you even played it? Unlike most, it's actually based on history and there isnt much BS going on. There's also more space games than Japanese games now days anyway. It only became "cliche" because a lot of japanese devs made the game take place in a familiar location to their own people, like how 80% of US games take place in New York.

Wow. Well, that's just bias. There's nothing uninteresting about any nation's history, let alone a period of strife. I don't think any country has managed to develop without ample amounts of intrigue, backbiting, conflict, and crazy politics. The fact that Japan had all this (maybe even worse) than Europe yet also shrouded it in a culture of manners and honor (to a more extreme degree than chivalry) is something I'd call pretty interesting.

Well, that sure didn't take long.
Rome 2 seems like the most obvious choice, but I want a Medieval 3.

@lazurus Yeah, one of the things I loved about the total wat games was that you could make totally silly versions of history. In Rome TW, I took over Rome playing as the Britons.
In TW: Modern Warfare, you could have the Russians invade America...
No, wait, that's just too stupid.

I really hope they do more than improve graphics. The games need a serious overall in unit and group AI and opponent AI.

I reckon the American Civil War would be the next logical setting. Whether people would be terribly interested in that is another matter....
