OnLive has announced that the service will be offering the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution as a streaming title day-and-date with the retail release, and users who pre-order the game will get all kinds of goodies. First, ponying up cash in advance for any flavor of the game will net a free copy of the original Deus Ex: Game of the Year for play via the service.
Secondly, pre-ordering the Augmented Edition of the game (for $53.99 rather than the standard $44.99, and packing its own goodies) will get you an OnLive game system to play it on, free of charge. If you already have a MicroConsole, you can choose a free game. That's not a bad deal at all, especially if you were considering getting Human Revolution in the first place.
The free game deal has to be redeemed by next Wednesday, May 25, but according to the fine print, the console deal is valid right up until Deus Ex: Human Revolution's release on August 23.

Not too mention we also get some random goodies. I'm enjoying my free Amnesia: The Dark Decent on OnLive right now. The developer put it on OnLive and gave it to us free for a limited time solely because OnLive websites were asking for the game to come to the platform.

Can we have an "Onlive" side tag?
To me this whole program is more comparable to a console then a PC or Mac. You can't change the files around, you can't mod the game, you can't play online with PC/Mac people, you don't have the choices of where to buy your digital download, you can't change much of the visual and game options. IMO its not a PC Gaming machine or program.
Yes I know, PCs process the game and then its streamed, but that is the only PC part of Onlive.

I'm almost sure you are wrong on this, if the game were to have a multiplayer component, i could only assume you have access to it.
But i think you're right on it not being a PC gaming machine or program, but that's kind of besides the point, it's still PC games.
Obviously inferior to a dedicated PC (subjective, depends on if you think it's worth it to have a dedicated PC), but it's still PC games.

You can only play with Onlive people using Onlive's LAN network.
It is like a huge LAN party with all the servers.

Playing online with PC/Mac people is entirely possible from a technical standpoint, but publishers tend to keep OnLive players only playing with other OnLive players as they see it as a separate platform.

I have tried Onlive.
I never said anything about graphics or if it is bad or not.
The graphics, from my experience are on par with consoles.
----The graphics are NOT better then my PC, not even close. I played the same game on Onlive and on and my PC, and nope not even the same.

It really isn't good if you're accustomed to PC gaming.
It has very noticeable mouselag for me at least (don't try and say it's my connection, the simple fact that i can use the service means it should be enough).
The graphics really are not that great, it's noticeable blurry.

or maybe they are just trying to increase their consumer base??
This is a new company, you HAVE to create a base first.

if they dont let you play online with other PC gamers then its not worth it. how many friends do i have that also use onlive? plus i hear they got the games on medium settings or something. but im gonna be watching closely for the months ahead how onlive evolves, they could be the next Steam they just need to get it right.

So where do you go to order the on live edition. I'm pretty sure gamestop won't be doing it. Is it only through the DE website? I have been wanting to try onlive, and this seems like a great fit for me...

Yea, I don't care how "enticing" these deals may be. It's still OnLive. It's a complete step backwards in my opinion. (Subscription based service with proprietary hardware that streams the games you pay full price for but don't actually own.) No thanks.
Posted: May 19th 2011 10:08PM dragunrising said
@BombProofGIJoe There is a subscription available with dozens of different games available for $10. Onlive also has 3-5 day rentals, and $5 Friday games. The preorder incentives are awesome. Preorder a game and get one free? How many other retailers/distributers do that?!

Ok, so it's an online rental service that streams games? That's still just as dumb as what I thought it was. What ever, blah blah "to each his own" but this is still a bad idea in my eyes.

@BombProofGIJoe You're still wrong. To make things clear, think of OnLive as Netflix for video games, but even better.
You can subscribe to the OnLive PlayPack for $10 a month and have access to more than 50 games, you can purchase a full PlayPass for a game that's going to be cheaper than what you'd find on the PC or on consoles or you can rent a game for a few bucks for three days.
I subscribe to the PlayPack and have purchased PlayPasses for Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mafia 2 and Homefront. I paid $5 for Batman and Mafia 2 each, and I paid $50 for Homefront but received a free MicroConsole and Metro 2033.
If you can get over the fact that you don't own physical copies of the game, OnLive is a tremendous service, and the company really cares about its customers. The Amnesia deal proved that.
The service is constantly improving, too. They just recently added voice support to the newer games and are starting to integrate Achievements, too. The truth is, it takes time to build a full online service that's comparable to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, but they're continuing to work on it and make it better.
I'm really excited to see what they'll announce at E3. I'm hoping they'll announce some new publisher partnerships and bring full controller support to all the games on the service.

OnLive is kind of a pseudo-console. It plays PC games but has a closed marketplace and online ecosystem. I would argue it has more console influence than PC considering the fact that OnLives business model is built on convenience and easy setup. I wouldn't say OnLive is necessarily good or bad for PC gaming. All console games are created on a PC. In the case of OnLive, they don't have to port anything.

Not sure which pre-order bundle to get...Duke Nukem Forever, Red Faction or Deus Ex. Personally Deus Ex is top on my list, however I have it pre-paid at Gamestop and I've yet to make OnLive my system/console of choice.
Help? So...which one should I get...?

I think that I might get the Duke Nukem pre order for the free game. I really don't know though. Heh. It's so fun when things work out well with Onlive. I love being able to actually play a game on my crummy early 2008 macbook. LOL!

It's weird, but I'm starting to come around on the service. I was dead set against it when it debuted (losing access to games if you stop paying), but with the current setup the biggest drawback seems to be that after 3 years of a game's release - assuming OnLive is still around - it can be removed entirely and you can't play it anymore. That still bugs me, but I wonder if at some point dropping $400-500 to upgrade my machine for BF3 or using the service is more cost effective. Guess it's time to give the PC client a shot!

I have to say onlive is impressing me lately.
If I didn't have too many games to play already I would consider this as an option. Still don't want this as the sole means of playing games at any point though.

I'm not too familiar with the Deus Ex series, so I think I'm going to go with preordering Red Faction and Duke Nukem.

I tried it for the amnesia deal, there is awful mouse lag when playing and everything is really choppy in the begging minuets but as the game wore on i found my self growing accustom to that lag, thats not something i would want with multiplayer games and something that i could learn to let go with singleplayer.
This is not for everyone and i dont see it too big unless internet connections get a bit stronger but man is it convenient but these great deals wont last forever. Most business when they are at the top wont have to do all these things to win customers, just a few to keep customers happy. All these things they are doing is because they are on the bottom of the totem pole.
