Atlus teases Persona 2 PSP localization in retro email

When we first pored over a recent email sent to us by Atlus -- a GIF-filled newsletter dated June 23, 1999, which is not today's date in the very least -- we thought we had inadvertently traveled between the folds of time while we slept. (Again.) Now, we've got another theory: Atlus might be hinting at a U.S. localization of its PSP port of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, which arrived in Japan last month.

The time-traveling newsletter doesn't actually mention the title, but its artificial date syncs up nicely with the original PSOne Innocent Sin's release date in Japan. Of course, we may just be reading too much into this altogether. Maybe Atlus really did just want to send us an email extolling the virtues of Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and providing some helpful tips on surviving Y2K.

Persona is still relevant?

@Jay Z since Final Fantasy fell into crapness after X, Persona is pretty much the best JRPG series around now.
So yeah. It's relevant.

Because it's cheaper and in Japan the PSP is the most popular console.

@corna Best selling for a particular month is not the same as most popular. Pretty sure the PS2 is still the most popular console in Japan and the DS still has a considerable lead over the PSP in terms of overall sales. The PSP has had some good months and the 3DS has yet to set the world on fire, so it's been gaining some ground, but it's not exactly the Console King of Japan. It's definitely far more popular in Japan than it is in America, I'll give you that.

I'm going out on a limb and guessing Phantom Menace is going to suck big balls.

I haven't played 4 yet. I still have my PS2 and the shiny disc sitting to the right of my TV waiting for me to finish P3P.

I'd be happy. It's surprisingly easy to finish an 80 hour RPG when you have a daily train commute.

I doubt it will happen though. The audio in P4 was already compressed within an inch of its life to fit on the PS2 DVD, and there is a LOT more content than Persona 3 had. I don't see how they can fit it onto a UMD.

P3 and P4 ruled my life for months.
I'm puzzled that P2: Eternal Punishment isn't on PSN (I have it on disc already, but it's a game that should be more readily available!)

I'm really excited about this game! It's awesome that I'll now have the first three Persona games on the PSP. Even though there are four games in the series so far, if feels like I'll have completed the Persona Portable trilogy. As much as I would love to see Atlus bring the fourth game to the PSP, I think it's time that they now focus all of their creative energies on making Persona 5. Also, I really want them to bring out Devil Survivor 2 over here. I'm super stoked that that game is coming out on the original DS and not the 3DS. I've yet to buy the new handheld and I probably won't, at least not for a good long while.

- Revelations: Persona
- Persona 2: Innocent Sin
- Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
- Persona 3
- Persona 4

The second game is in two parts.

The Personas are my favorite, but there are a number of other games in the Shin Megami Tensei series/universe with similar Jack Frosty goodness...

Well, if SMT:DS2 is only on the 3DS... I may have to get a 3DS!

(Probably have to anyway for the new Metal Gear game...)

But yeah, while I may not agree with your user name, I concur with the observation that Persona may be the new Final Fantasy - it's all kinds of awesome.

At any rate, if P2 does come here I'll bite. It would be a nice addition to the renaissance of excellent JRPGs coming out for the PSP recently.
