Avid North American readers won't get their hands on the English translation of Miyuke Miyabe's Ico: Castle in the Mist, a follow-up novel to Ico, the beloved PS2 classic (and soon to be PS3 remaster), until August 16. However, thanks to the Japanese book printer Haikasoru, you can now get a taste of the story online.
The short excerpt gives an excellent sense of the novel's atmosphere, which is to say, Ico's atmosphere. We expect that you already have an inkling of what the setting is going to feel like, considering you should have already played Ico. Heck, even if you haven't, the book's title tells you everything you need to know: There is a castle. It is adjacent to mist.

Kind of ironic, considering the game had less than a dozen spoken lines.
...Not complaining, though.

This is kind of timely. I just picked up the novels a few days ago. Have yet to read them. (It is split into two volumes.)
It sold fairly well, so I`m guessing it is well written. I`ll be crossing my fingers that the translator does a good job.

@Tamyu - I think it selling well has more to do with the author being a popular novelist, than the actual game.
Still though, I've been dying to read it ever since I read a fan translated chapter years ago, and I'm not complaining that I've finally got the chance.

Acosta wins! BRUTALITY.
Also, people who don't like Ico don't have souls. That's just science.

This reads like a pretty bad fanfic. Ico most certainly did not insist on being sacrificed, he was taken to the Castle forcefully in shackles, and took the first chance to get away that came his way. I imagine the rest of this "novel" is just as faithful to the original material, which is to say not at all. No thank you.

I don't know why they chose that part as the excerpt to use. I have both books and have read both of them cover to cover. The books are surprisingly faithful to the original game, I think you will be very surprised. That whole intro sequence to the game is all in the novel and not only that but you get the back story as to why he is being put there and who the riders are etc. The second book delves into Yorda`s story and it's really quite interesting and well written in Japanese. Somethings you just can't translate without loosing the beautifully written prose and imagery. It all depends on the talent of the translator and how good of a story teller they are as well.

There is another Castle In The Mist, a book for kids and dog lovers, Volume 3 in the Planet Of The Dogs series...Out in space, on the other side of the sun, is the Planet of the Dogs where dogs live in peaces and happiness. This is the story of how the dogs came down to earth to prevent war in the land of the forest people and free the kidnapped children from the Castle In The Mist.
