I thought the point of this was so we could essentially beta the game...

Nope the point of this is so capcom can "gauge" the "interest" of the game,

In reality, Capcom is holding the possibility of release hostage before they more than likely can the game, for a quick buck or two. And I say we partially blame Mr. Inafune for just dumping out of the dev process, and making it lose probably its most influential supporter.

No, it's a beta, your just opinionating it based on your views of the company. It's part of the Dev Room program, as they want feedback. The prototype version also shows how many are interested in the game, which ALSO helps out towards development, because interest is PART of feedback.

Well yea, the game isn't greenlit, prototype version is to help with development, but if nobody buys it to give them feedback, the project could be shut down because it's not greenlit. It's still possible that the title could be greenlit even if the response from the demo is lower than they want.

And that's a ransom. They know there's a fanbase as MML has been picking up fans over the years. Thus why it sells for like 70 and the sequel for 300.

Just because the game is rare doesn't mean it's got a fanbase.

It's not a ransom, would you prefer they not do a prototype version at all and have the fate of the game up in the air with the chance of being cancelled without warning? It's a beta.

And though there is a fanbase, it doesn't mean its a large one.

It's not a beta. It's a prologue to the main game.

That would be like calling Dead Rising Case Zero a beta.

Buying a game just for the demo is just like buying a game on steam just for the TF2 hat ...... both acts sadden me.

Now If you had said "I bought dragon quest 8 because it was an awesome game and I got a cool demo as a bonus" I could have respected that. But to buy the game just for the FFXII demo ........

I guess the next phase in your argument will be calling me self entitled for expecting a demo for free to entice me to buy their game. When obviously I should be chomping at the bit to pay for a demo to entice me to buy their game. Doubly so when they come out and say essentially "If you don't buy the demo we won't even make the game"

Unfortunately for Capcom and my beloved MML I choose not to reward bad behavior.

While it is a prologue to the main game, it is made to show consumers how the machanics of the game work and to raise awareness. It is a stand-alone beta. Dead Rising Case Zero isn't a beta as it was intended to be a side game, but it is in the same category of games as Proyotype version. I believe it was an Ubisoft representative that recently spoke about side games like Assassin's Creed Project Legacy and Dead Rising Case Zero. Stand alone titles that link to the main game.

The reason why this is more of a beta though, is because Capcom is asking for input from the consumers. Again, Mega Man Legends 3 is being developed WITH THE FANS. From designing Reaverbots, to choosing Mega Man's armor, even to picking the design of the new female character, much of the game is being done based on fan input. Prototype version will release and it will encourage people that purchase it to go to the Dev Room on Capcom-Unity to give their impressions.

I bought DQVIII for the game, but I preordered it for the demo. I ended up not enjoying the game very much, Dragon Quest is a beautiful looking game and has great music and charm, but it's way too mundane and traditional for my tastes. It doesn't evolve much in the gameplay (And I got pretty far into the game, so don't say I didn't give it a chance). So as much as I appreciate the series for being what it is, I feel like I really purchased it for the demo, because I enjoyed Final Fantasy XII a lot more.

Also, if you're a fan of something and you want to get an early chance to play, it's not really an issue to buy it. I'm a Final Fantasy fan, not a Dragon Quest fan. Final Fantasy fans in Japan bought Advent Children on Blu Ray for the Final Fantasy XIII demo, and their input changed the outcome of the game. It really isn't unheard of. TF2 hats on the other hand is not an incentive to buy a game. Even if you're a TF2 fan, a hat does not make any gameplay difference and you won't even see it much when you play (unless you're taunting). Those are just a gift from Valve.

I'm still not going to be fuzzed about it. I'm just very happy that they contribute to the fans and give us a taste of the game, even though it's early in development. Other gaming companies should do the same with their games, give the fans a taste of like the beginning of their title and we give them feedback while we get to enjoy an early play of an anticipated title of ours. It's basically a win-win situation here.

Also, Mega Man Legends is awesome. Everybody who haven't tried the series out, you definitely should. It's a great mixture of action and RPG followed by great memorable characters, environments and overall a great experience.

@Gexus Well, considering there are no guaranteed plans to actually create and release the full game, this is very far from "a win-win situation"

Hmm so your vote is that other developers charge $ to be alpha testers for their product. "Encouraging" us by dangling it like a pork chop and telling us that if not enough people buy their alpha//demo .... that they very well might not bother making the actual game ........

Yup More studios should charge us for demos and hold games hostage.

How is that any different than making people buy a completely different game just to try a beta? They've been doing that for years. I bought Dragon Quest 8 for the Final Fantasy XII beta. It's just now with digital distribution so strong, they can make these beta's separate now. It's also a full experience in itself usually well worth the price. People loved Dead Rising Case Zero, and though it was more of a demo, it was completely separate from the end product.

The difference between biying DragonQuest 8 for FF beta is that if you didn't buy DQ8 the FF game would still be made.

" a renewed desire to create a product of the highest quality."

MML is arguably one of my favorite series of games, even tho it has failed to make it onto the last two generations of consoles. So I'm somewhat torn here.

How about instead of spending all this time making a demo of the highest quality ...... you just make the game .....

Seriously you make the game and I'll probably shell out for a 3DS just to play it. It will likely be one of my few day 1 game purchases.... but I'm not buying a 3DS so I can pay you for a demo of your game. Certainly not under the threat that if the demo sells poorly the game itself might never see the light of day....

You're really making it hard for me to want to give you money Capcom and that pains me because like I said MML is one of my favorite series.

Correction: arguably the biggest KNOWN title.

Unless you have a secret list of eShop titles - in that case, please do share. I would be very interested in seeing said list.

Mega Man Legends 3 only begins with this character, Barrett during the beginning of the game (which you'll play in the prologue) because if you remember the ending of Legends 2, a certain someone is stuck way up in the skies, so to speak. Once they figure out how to solve that, then we can get our hero back and play as him.

I for one welcome a bit of a change, playing as another character as well.
