If you're compiling a mental list of franchises which will be summoned from their respective graves at E3 2011, it might be a safe bet to tack Stainless Games' Carmageddon onto the list. The website Carmageddon.com -- a domain registered to Square Enix Europe, owner of the original game's co-publisher SCi -- was recently updated with an ever-popular countdown timer, as well as three Jolly Rogers.
The countdown is scheduled to terminate at 5 a.m. on June 1, which seems like a weird time to announce much of anything -- assuming there's something to announce. Now, if it were us, we'd wait the extra week and announce it at the gigantic, well-publicized annual trade show. Unless, of course, this is a countdown-countdown; a maneuver that's also rapidly increasing in popularity.

I'm down for some car combat, even if it's old-school. I'd be down for some Vigilante 8, even. Carmageddon... uuuh maybe not so much that."
Dammit, I invoked this.

Heh, I remeber when you made that comment. Personally, I really enjoyed Carmaggedon back in the day. If they did it correctly, I could see this being fun. But I remain rather skeptical that they can pull it off without being overly campy or crappy.

Dear Gawd I love me some Carmaggendon. I've never gamed on a PC so hard in my life. Well, maybe with Quake 1 and 2...
But then it came out on N64 and was forever ruined.
Don't let me down, Square!

December 1998 I spent more time on two demo's than any other time before or here after.
Carmageddon 2 and Rainbow Six. When getting both of those demos that month I stayed locked on them just like they were the full games themselves. I can only just imagine ramming other cars with my bus of doom driven by none other than Mike Hunt.

I would be fine with them rereleasing the second one with graphical updates and online play. It would be perfect for XBLA/PSN.

Let it be a low budget digital title. I can't see a reboot being worth retail no matter what they've done to it, but I'll probably eat it up quickly at a bargain price.

Square Enix should've made the countdown end today at 6:00pm.

@Mr Esc is the namesarcasm is my - And The Four Nascar Drivers of the Carpocalypse did rev their engines, and send the wicked screaming. When the dust settled, the good ol'boys had been taken back home, to Carhalla, where the Gods and Angels did reside, while the wicked were left down below to watch funny car races for eternity.
Amen.
Amen.

That would be awesome if they do bring it back. And while this whole old-school driving genre is getting a revival, can we see Quarantine and Interstate '76 make a comeback please??

I spent many an hour playing carmageddon one and two. I loved in the first one after playing through a while and collecting cars and money I was able to buy a lightning car that tore through all the pedestrians as you drove down the street.

I know Squeenix is just the publisher, but I cannot help but imagine this game Squeenixed with belts, zippers, weird hair and cyberpunk trimmings all over the cars.

@Banksyliveraa I'm kinda with you on this. Another game I have fond memories of from my old PC days that will probably get a terrible new iteration; I'm not convinced yet that 2K knows what they're doing with X-COM.

That's exactly what I was thinking about too. That and DNF.
I bet they're tough to make though. Do you stay true to the old formula and get cheers from the older crowd, or try something totally new and risk it all.

Only Carmageddon I've played is Carmageddon 64.
Yeah, I have a very bad vision of this franchise.

I wouldn't trust that site entirely. I saw like one or two games that were listed as abandon ware, when they're still fully supported and protected by their IP holder.
