Torn between your love of the original Cave Story's beautifully pixel-drawn sprites and your excitement for Cave Story 3D's complete reinvention of the game's hovering island-world? You can now have your cave and eat it too: NIS America recently announced the game's 2D sprite mode, which takes the original, flat characters and enemies and places them in remodeled 3D environments, Paper Mario-style.
Destructoid managed to get its hands on a pair of images of this double-dimensioned mode, one of which is posted above. Personally, we think it looks pretty gosh darn neat, though now we're going to have to worry about poor little Quote slipping through crevices in the cave floor. Guess it still beats getting squished by the wizard-king of Hell, but ... um, not by much.

Good, because to be honest, the 3D character models were awful.

Hey now. Are you saying it's not fair to dislike the visuals? Because calling anyone who doesn't like them 'nostalgia snobs' implies that, and such an implication is stupid at best.
Personally, I think some of the stages look great (and others don't), but I didn't like the character models much either. Has nothing to do with 'charm' or anything... they're just ugly.

I think the game would've come out better if they had kept the all the 2d assets and just made them higher res. Idk, just my 2 cents.

I don't get why people don't want to embrace change, I mean, we already have at least 3 versions with 2D graphics, so it's actually pleasant to see something new about this game, even if it's only graphics
Want to play 2D Cave Story on a handheld?? pick up the DS version!
Let us enjoy the revamped 3D experience (that sound like a commercial..)

I don't really care for the new aesthetics, but it's not like I would rebuy this game anyway so it doesn't matter I guess.

I don't like the 3D visuals. It looks too "messy". When you try to jump precisely between platforms, while shooting hordes of bats and whatnot, these visuals will certainly not help. That's why the original visuals fitted so well to the gameplay.
If Cave Story needed a visual remake, it would be much better if they made a 1080p 2D game, with high-res sprites in a hand painted style, like the concept art. THAT would be awesome, instead of some PS2-era graphics. I believe it's 3D graphics only to sell it as a gimmick for the 3DS screen, and you know it too ;)

The only reason I got my 3DS,
now the only thing they need to bring back.. "Huzzah!"

This actually, suddenly, makes it look a lot more promising some how.
But I also feel like they're doing this to cover for the fact they might not do such a good job with the 3D character models.

For those who don't want this new version but still want to play it on their 3DS: There's always getting it on the DSi shop... which will be available to the 3DS.
