Audition director Takashi Miike making Ace Attorney movie

Speaking to reporters during the Cannes film festival, director Takashi Miike (Audition, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, and a million other things) announced his next film: "It is a very light comedy that I am filming now," as the Huffington Post quotes him, "a court drama, based on a video game, the Nintendo game DS." Warning: that Huffington Post interview is pretty much entirely about ritual suicide except for that brief quote.

HOLD IT! If we're reading this correctly, that means a high-profile, acclaimed film director is adapting the Ace Attorney series from the dual screens to the big screen. This is the best news ever for fans of overblown, overdressed arguments.

This isn't Miike's first game adaptation about people in brightly colored suits. In 2007, Miike directed a live-action film based on Yakuza.

by light comedy he means the bloodshed and decapitation of limbs will (mostly) occur off-screen.

Hang on a second... a game that looks great because of it's anime qualities being turned into a live-action movie?
And no one see a problem with that?

@RollingSun2000 Have you seen any of Miike's films? This has to win! This is like handing David Lynch a popular scifi franchise, and letting him make a movie about it. Wait, maybe that's a bad example.

Good news or bad news? I love AA, but hate Miike's shock horror.

@MLS Miike isn't just about shock horror. He's directed approximately a million movies and some of them are family friendly, some of them are comedic, some of them are relatively non-violent. Some are fantastic, some are really bad, some are in the middle.

He's one director who will do pretty much anything.

I didn't know about the Yakuza movie, which sounds cool, but I did come here to mention that this shouldn't be too surprising - he already directed a live-action adaptation of the old anime Yatterman in 2009, which was a kid's movie with song and slapstick and everything.

Phoenix loses the case that gets some guy who is being set up by the mob over the murder of his own family. Phoenix goes on a killing spree killing all those responsible. Ends with phoenix killing the corrupt judge with an axe while yelling objection!

Have your looked at what he's done? The man has more range than Texas. And after watching 13 Assassins, I can safely say that this could be great.

13 assassins was mediocre tbh. Was good till the battle then I thought I was watching a live action dynasty warriors....

Its only a possibility, he hasn't confirmed it, and there is actually two court-based DS games in Japan that would make perfect fodder for a "light court comedy" movie.
