Disney Universe sounds like Kingdom Hearts with better hair [update: trailer!]

We've all had the thought while playing a Kingdom Hearts game: "Sure, this is fun, I just wish my clothes didn't have so many buckles on them." Your prayers may have been answered by Disney Universe, a new multiplayer action game unveiled this morning for the 360, PS3 and Wii.

Here's what we can extrapolate from the release: Players will team with friends and battle bad guys in six Disney-themed worlds with the aid of Disney character costumes, each with their own special powers.

We're hoping for the Uncle Remus costume that will allow us to disappear from store shelves for decades. Maybe that's not terribly likely, but we'll all find out together when Disney Universe Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Drops this fall.

Update: Catch a teaser trailer after the break. We're sure that scene of a character swinging a key like a sword is just there coincidentally.

So, does this mean no more Disney/Marvel dlc for LittleBigPlanet, given that this looks like an obvious rip-off of that title?

From this little bit of information, you can tell that this is a rip off of LittleBigPlanet? How so? Because they are going to wear costumes? I don't see the logic in claiming this is an obvious rip-off, but to each his own. I was thinking more along the lines of 40 winks, where you find costume boxes in levels and transform into that costume for a limited time.

No idiots, if you actually played costume quest, you would know that it is a turn-based rpg, so this is nothing like costume quest.

Do your research before you epically fail at commenting on a game you know nothing about.

@Kyosuke There's more to what a game is then genre. What was Costume Quest again? A game where you dress up in different outfits and get special powers based on that costume. Sounds similar to what this game is.

@IwillKILLurGOD Seriously. Just as a reversal, if a strategic RPG had hordes of mooks fought with juryrigged superweapons (and these being a central gameplay mechanic) in a claustrophobic public arena, I think it could be rightly compared a bit with Dead Rising. Given the lack of details beyond that in this article I think it's a fair bit of shorthand.

Unless people were being dismissive that this was some kind of ripoff. Then they deserve to be ripped for trying to make a trite comparison.

"Each costume you wear has a different main weapon that can be leveled up as you accomplish certain goals. You can also grab weapons from enemies, and pick up the enemies themselves and throw them off ledges or swing them around. In the Alice in Wonderland-themed level that I saw, the enemies were equipped with the flamingos that were used to play croquet in the film. It was fun to grab the flamingo and fling the enemy back and forth as he attempted to hang onto it."

I can't believe that Stitch and Mike ate those oddly colored children. That seems awfully un-Disney.

Don't say it's a Little Big Planet rip-off, when the gameplay probably is completely different. Wait and see. Just because they are cute and have costumes doesn't necesseraly mean that it's just like LBP :)

Methinks it will be a LBP clone but with weapons (ala fancy pants adventures). Time will tell of course.

The Uncle Remus reference makes me want to pull out my VHS copy of Song of the South. Too bad I no longer own a VCR. Still hoping for a Blu-ray release despite the fact that it skipped DVD.

I love me some mature games (LA Noire, GOW, BF, Red Dead, etc.) But as a father I love these types of games. I just hope they deliver a quality product, there is a tendency in the industry to deliver crappy family games cause they think no one will notice.

Yeah, I played it. I meant the costume gimmick and character design were very similar, not necessarily gameplay--which I fully agree is hopefully more engaging.

Why don't they just have you play as those characters instead of using costumes?

Costume Quest is nothing like this; however, Costume Quest is also awesome and clearly rocks balls. I spent an epic Halloween playing that game. Need to get the DLC.

The sad thing is, the plot of this game will be much less patchy, unlike KH.

doesn't sound like Kingdom Hearts at all to me besides there being Disney characters in both. i must be missing something.

Nobody is saying Costume Quest is bad, I loved it. We're saying the costume-gives-you-powers theme has already been done.

I agree, this game actually looks pretty awesome. It seems to have a bit of Pixar-styled visual humor, too.

Kingdom Hearts mixes different Disney franchises into one game.

That's the reference...

This game has got Stitch (he's the Blue guy), its so mine. I'm just disappointed they made Stitch a little more clumsy than he really is. :|
