Oh look, an article on COD. Which one is this? MW3? Wow it looks just like MW2.

Seriously, COD is the Madden of FPS.

Never thought I'd have to disagree with Jay-Z.

This game is a sequel to MW2. Webster's online dictionary defines sequel as either a subsequent development or the next installment. So, since this game is a subsequent development of the events presented by MW2, it is a proper sequel. Would you honestly be able to say that you would have been pleased if this game were totally different in every way when compared to MW2? That said, we haven't even SEEN real gameplay yet. The story may look similar, but this is exactly what I mean when I prove that MW3 is a sequel to MW2. The campaigns should look similar.

MW2 presented evolution of the Call of Duty Formula, not revolution. As the second game of a (Sub)series, what more would you expect? weapon variety was nearly doubled when compared to Call of Duty 4. There was a complete graphical overhaul in Modern Warfare 2, One could argue that MW2 had a better main set of maps, The campaign was easily louder and more explosive than Call of Duty 4's, and whether or not it was better is debatable. Moving on, there was Spec Ops for those interested. I felt that it added more replay value to the game and had a ton of fun trying to finish every mission on Veteran.

What would you like implemented? Jokes aside, what? Vehicles, lasers, jet packs? Kinda running thin on the time and setting they use for the game. I would like weapon fire selects. Im frigging tired of them dictating which gun is accurate and can shoot, single, semi, or 3 round burst when in fact a large % can do all 3.

@Jay Z I'm gonna agree with you, on the grounds that they are releasing a new iteration every year. And it seems if they cannot get a new iteration they bring in a new dev team so they can have multiple in development at once. I'm just growing tired of more of the same with marginal changes/updates being released as full "new" games. I love companies like valve who actually price their games (mostly) based on the content provided. L4D2 being the only time I was really upset with them because it was an example of what I had mentioned previously. So many new iterations for so many franchises are coming out that should clearly be expansions. And with the CoD franchise even their "expansion" games are charged at full price. That's unacceptable! They were also the first game to charge $60 for a PC game, they raised the price in Europe for the declining value of the dollar at the time and then their reasoning for it in the US staying $60 was... you're gonna pay it anyways. People trying to drastically change up the formulas in sequels is the reason we get turds like Gears 2. It alienates the fan-base.

A sequel should be more of the same with some upgrades, refinement, balancing, new maps, etc. That gives us awesome stuff like Uncharted 2.

You people are missing Jay's point.

You've got to be pretty ignorant to think that the next Call of Duty game will be largely different from any of the previous ones. Not a lot has changed within the series for a long time.

Whilst Call of Duty is far from being the only game with said repetition problem, it is one of the most prominent ones in the lime-light. Like Guitar Hero, the series doesn't really add anything new in the sequels apart from shiner graphics and a new line-up of people to shoot down in the same manner we did last year. Oh, and there's some new developers willing to rid themselves of all pride for a quick buck.

It doesn't help that the entire genre is completely saturated with this crap. There's not much going for the shooter genre as a whole. Here's a piece of advice though: Get some actual writers. I've always considered video games to simply be an interactive way of telling a story; Call of Duty nails the interaction but completely fails on any decent storyline.

@Jay Z Yea COD really doesn't push the envelope in graphics or sound technology. But they are adding a lot of cool MP features with each new version that make it worth it to most people.

The biggest fail with Black Ops was not integrating Zombie mode in with the rest of MP, so you couldnt use your emblem, XP, CP, etc. I can't believe how cheap the COD companies are not to fix that kinda stuff.

BF3 will push the envelope and make me want both.

@Golds I hope they can innovate on the controls just a little bit, either by tweaking the damage balance, and/or allowing for defensive slides/rolls.
Even then, that might not work b/c it's a bit unrealistic and may alienate a large part of the fan base.

If they add destructibility, that would be a huge plus.

Really, if they re-created a game like COD4, with better maps, and without the glitches and imbalances that showed up in mw2, I'd be more than happy. Or even black ops cod points system, but without being gimmicky and eventually just giving players a false sense of freedom of choice.

Yes you're right. No one can be genuinely unhappy with the direction the series has taken. It's not about the silly over-the-top plot, or the outdated graphics, unimpressive AI, broken multiplayer with no attempt to test with public betas, or any of that. . . you're right its just a trend.

You must be new here. Knee jerk complaining about CoD games is what keeps this site in business.

I feel you though. I loved CoD2 and MW, and they've been getting progressively lousier ever since. The problem is, the smack talk comes too often from people who don't even play the games in the first place, or just comment as an excuse to plug Battlefield. It's just easier to take pot shots at large targets, I guess.

And if BF3 is the next big thing then 2-3 years from now those same people hating on CoD now will be hating on the Battlefield series then in favor of the next "not cool yet" shooter.

The same way that the people hating on CoD now are, for the most part, the same ones that were hating on Halo 3 years ago and talking about how great CoD4 was as if it made them cool because it wasn't the most popular game yet.

Gamers are just a bunch of hipsters.

Uh, what?

When CoD4 released there had been 8 CoD games in a franchise that was only 5 years old.

Halo had 4 games in a franchise that was 7 years old.

There were already twice as many CoD games even though the franchise was newer.

This year if I even bother with MW3 (after seeing Battlefield) I'm waiting for it to be a budget priced title. As awesome as MW2 was it was a total of 8 hours of game play for me because I had no desire to play multi and still dont. Gives me plenty of time to play other things while I wait for a game that will probably still sell a million copies to cost 30 bucks or less.

Everything about MW3 is just so over-the-top and deafening it just becomes numbing to any real effect at this point. What started in MW1 as a semi-plausible conflict that was reminiscent of Black Hawk down has morphed into a ridiculous 80's anti-Communist Michael Bay Movie. MW3 just feels a bit underwhelming, and after setting up a WW3 mega conflict where can the series go from here?

I popped in CoD Black Ops last weekend and was instantly reminded how much I loathe that game in comparison to Battlefield Bad Company 2. They're really going to have to come up with something good to get me to play the multiplayer in this one. Come to think of it, Black Ops is the first CoD in some time that I haven't even yet completed the single player.

@bloodlinejake The spawns are terrible in black ops...I remember an esp. bad round where I was killed almost instantly, 3x in a row, by the same guy. Needless to say, I ragequit that round.

Still haven't bought into the BFBC2 kool-aid though either...It's fun, but the game can be just as unpleasant if playing in a round with a lousy team. Then it's just me running back and forth like in a basketball game, capturing then losing flag points moments later.
