SSFIV Arcade Edition PC to discourage piracy (and frustrate buyers) with 'limited' offline mode

Okay, so there is a catch. We figured Capcom had a "solution" in place when it confirmed that Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition was coming to PC. The problem? Piracy -- the threat of which kept Capcom from releasing vanilla SSFIV on PC just a year ago.
In a blog post on Capcom-Unity, company VP Christian Svensson has addressed some "Stuff You Want to Know About SSFIV:AE for PC." Scroll down and you'll get to the catch.
"SFIV unfortunately was plagued by pirates and hackers that messed up leaderboards," Svensson writes of the original iteration on PC (which still sold well by Capcom's earlier account). "To hopefully remedy that, SSFIV:AE will be making use of what is called SSA technology."
While not as random as certain TSA measures -- SSFIV:AE players can still wear shoes and needn't limit their beverages to 3.4-ounce bottles -- the game's Software Security Assurance protocol is no less strict. Players are required to be signed into Games for Windows Live in order to access most of the game's features and content.
In offline mode, SSFIV:AE is reduced to a sort of demo, with players limited to local play only (obviously), but also restricted to 15 of the 39 fighters and unable to save settings or challenges progress. DLC is inaccessible when playing offline, as well.
Should the GWFL connection be lost mid-game, the player is given a chance to sign back in at a "logical break point" -- but should that fail ... you're in demo mode. And if you don't live in a GFWL-supported region? Svensson calls that a "buyer-beware situation."
Prospective purchasers should also be aware that Steam and Impulse will implement their respective "security solutions" (in addition to SSA), and that Steam users won't use GFWL Marketplace to purchase DLC. "We'll provide more details on that wrinkle at a later date," Svensson notes.

Honestly, who in the hell thinks this is a good idea? I mean, it's not like pirates are going to be able to crack this and make it fully playable with all of the content not only without GFWL but also without an internet connection, right guys? Right?

Im going to buy the steam version óf course.......but i´m going to get the pirate one so i can play in one player mode without stupid protections, really sometimes there are no choices......

@jsx Since cracks happen anyway, public acceptance of piracy would increase. The nature of this DRM means pirated copies are easier to install and use, since they bypass online checks and don't require a constant connection.
The goal should be to give paying customers something that the pirates can't have, not the other way around. When I buy games with an offline component, I want to be able to play those games whether there's a connection or not, and the only way to do this on this DRM is through hacks.

Capcom being the industry leader in invasive DRM is also not going to win them many fans. You'd think they would've gotten some severe backlash from when the PSN outage prevented their customers from playing their DRM-locked games offline, but I guess Bionic Commando and Final Fight are old enough that people lived without them for a few weeks without bitching. This kind of DRM for SF4 might cause some more vocal outrage, though, when outages or unstable connections prevent players from even playing a two player game locally.

Wow, this almost sounds WORSE than DRM. As crappy as online passes and things are, this crap makes me glad I'm not a PC gamer who has to deal with this nonsense. That constant Internet connection thing is something Capcom seems to have a hard-on for.

Well I haven't played a SF4 game yet. I don't bother much with consoles and I didn't want to buy vanilla SF4 on Steam because I was holding out for this very update (despite what Capcom originally told us).
So how the frig am I going to practice the game and play locally with friends? That's kind of what we do. Party games in local, or we go online whenever that first option isn't possible.
So Capcom. You want to either force me to play online against people who don't own the game, or play a demo offline with buddies and not be able to train/practice with all characters?
Seriously. F you Capcom. I will think twice about buying your games in the future.

@Banksyliveraa Just to clarify, you have to be signed in the entire time, you don't have to be in online matches the entire time. It's still a ridiculous and asinine system, and enough of a reason to not purchase the game, but you can still do stuff like local multiplayer and single player. You just have to be connected at all times for the full game.

@Jenks A few weeks ago the power went down at my house. I turned on my laptop and played some games. With this DRM, I would not be able to do that.

On one hand it's better than Ubisoft's previous approach but at the same time;
1. Pirates will crack it, it's only a matter of time
2. Steam and Impulse would probably be more secure than GFWL + SSA ironically enough
3. This punishes people with internet that stops working during bad weather

It also punishes people who may just not always have internet. I buy tons of single player capable PC games for my laptop because I'm on the road or flying for work all the time. I bought SFIV on Steam, just picked up the complete Sam & Max, and I was planning on picking this up as well. Looks like I'll have to pirate it to actually be able to play the full game

Unfortunately this seems to be pretty standard on a lot of PC games nowadays, I just started playing F1 2010 and it won't let me save anything if I don't log into GFWL.

What people really need to do is boycott .... sadly the collective spine of the internet made of jelly and every other person who said they would boycott will buy it day one.
Of course even if a boycott did work they would simply insist that the DRM was not restrictive enough as obviously everyone mist be pirating the game ..... Its an effing no win.

We really have seen the turning point where Western games have gone a year or two ahead of the Japanese. I never wanted to admit it because I was happy with our Japanese masters in the 90's. They really did stand still the last few years and we've progressed past them. They just NOW are fiddling with crappy DRM type tactics? Can't they look at the failure it brought certain western games already? Are they truly so xenophobic that they still can't believe we've already tried DRM and have it fail miserably? This is why Japanese gaming is set to fail.

Hey, thanks Microsoft for putting SSA into GFWL and screwing us actual customers over.
Same applies to DiRT 3 by the way. You cannot create/save a profile while not online, signed into LIVE.
I'm just waiting for the day where LIVE goes down just like PSN for like a month. Everything would change again and be less painful than now...
