BioWare teases Dragon Age artwork, says improvements must be made in future installments
99
In a recent post on the official BioWare forums, Dragon Age 2 lead designer Mike Laidlaw addressed some of fans' concerns with the Kirkwall-stuck sequel. After naming some of these issues -- such as "level re-use, the implementation of wave combat, concerns about the narrative and significance of choice" -- Laidlaw added, "I'm not only aware of the concerns, but I agree that there are aspects of DA II that not only can but must be improved in future installments. And that is precisely our intent."
As far as the series' future, Laidlaw may have given a sneak peek at what's next for Dragon Age in the very same forum post. Teasing the images seen in the gallery below, Laidlaw said, "I stumbled across a few images I thought I might share with you folks," adding, "After all, there's been a lot of requests to explore areas outside of Kirkwall, and I agree that seeing some more of the Free Marches would be cool." As long as we're not talking about Lurkwall, a very similar suburb of Kirkwall, we think this would be an expansion worth getting excited about.

Actually, 'significance of choice' was one of the few places the game wasn't a complete waste of time.
That and the character dialogue was brilliant. Everything else...not so much.

Indeed. Right about the point where your significance became insignificant.

You mean the significance of choice that represented a different npc giving a speech about how mages are oppressed and then killing you instead of another npc?
DAII had about as much significance of choice as subway giving me a choice between "spicy" and "Dijon" mustard.
I hate to plug a game when talking about another game, but if you want to see actual significance of choice at play, go try the Witcher 2. Significance of choice isn't swapping npc models and dialogue trees, it's actually having the game change when you do something.
(it's even witchier than the last ;0)

You're telling me that every character in your team becoming some wounded soul emo was "brilliant writing"? There is absolutely no joy in Hawke's party. The one source of joy that there MAY be, Isabella, is written as so much of a pouncy harlot that there is absolutely no subtlety or charm to her, unlike Zevran.
I didn't mind the wave combat. To me, they finally got combat right in this one by making cooldowns shorter, and battle more active. I hated combat in DA:O. Then again, I didn't spend all day spamming poisons and alchemy, my character ended up as a Two-Hand Warrior with a Super Sword. Still wasn't all that great. Should have used a Hammer...
Ahem. Anyway, they said they'd be improving Dragon Age with "DA:2". Expect the entire game to absolutely frelling suck in every area except combat, just like every other game that gets a console-focused release. Whilst I love good combat, if the rest of the game suffers for it, it's just not worth it.
Besides, they just released, and yet they're talking "the next game". It'll be just as rushed, just as shitty, it'll have Day 1 DLC because EA sidetracks a few members to get DLC out on release day (just like with BF3). I'm staying away from EA games until they stop destroying every IP that their studios birth. Woe to all the ones who bought DA2, they won't be supporting your game.

All I had to do was look at screenshots and hear about the character creation removal.
I enjoyed getting all the achievements for Origins (3 play-throughs!) but botching the sequel was probably the worst thing they could do, since now I don't want anything to do with the franchise at all (similar to how I'll never watch Star Wars II & III).
RPGs are time-consuming, and there's too many better choices from far more innovative developers.

Character creation removal? I think you are mixing your facts my good sir. They only removed the ability to play as an elf or a dwarf. Still bad, but they did NOT remove character creation.
You just had to play as the default hawke for the first few minutes of the game. While I thought it was an interesting concept (You were playing as the *legend of hawke, not the actual one) I thought it failed for the very fact of forcing you to do it.

Technically her never said anything about the protagonist being a gay man-whore.
He could still be a man-whore while only sleeping with all the woman.

With DA 2, they pretty much "Jumped the Shark". Was nowhere near as epic as the first, and just seemed like a way to milk easy money out of the franchise.

Translation: We have been playing The Witcher 2 non-stop and finally realized how crappy our game is so now we are going to steal a couple of ideas and say that we were really listening to the fans.
My reaction: I'll save my money to buy two copies of The Witcher 3 instead.
Disclaimer: The game wasn't actually crappy, just not as good as it could have been. Compared to DA1 was a total mess tough.

Sorry, but I'll probably never purchase DAII. Re-using environment assets over and over again is a huge pet-peeve of mine. I think games like AC: Brotherhood and surely Fallout: New Vegas had a downfall in that area.

Doesn't change the fact DA 2 was a blatent cash in though. I mean why go backwards from the first one? The problems with it were obviously not mistakes because you did so much better in DA 1, and really just wanted to get it out of the door and get some quick cash.

But I only want to go outside of Kirkwall to visit some caves... and only for a little while. Then bring me back home so I feel safe. Also I want everyone I meet to die at the end of the game no matter what choices I make. That sir is a recipe for fun.

DA2 was mess and step in a wrong direction i feel.(combat is somewhat better though) i just hated where some of the aspects of story will not change no matter what you do or do not do you always end up with shitty result. it was a quick cash in and i hope they will correct themselves in DA3. still i buy anything bioware on day one be it the Shepard cooking mama or ReaperVille

One of the biggest problems with Dragon Age 2 is that they didn't make any use of the Grey Wardens. They're like the Jedi of the DA world.

True, but it still had dark spawn and they could have utilized them more regardless. Also, saying Grey Wardens should only show up during a Blight makes them too one-dimensional.

That is true. But he's kind of a run-away Grey Warden. Not really operating as part of the army of Grey Wardens. He more or less exists to serve himself anymore and by the end of the game you want to punch his face in because he takes matters into his own hands.

"From my perspective, as someone looking to the future and the DA franchise, I think that DA II moved us into a space that has more potential."
Want to fix the issues with DA2? FIRE MIKE LAIDLAW.
The fans hated the new direction.
The game was terrible. But the worse part was that it felt like a direct insult to the fanbase: one that disenfranchised fans of the original games while trying to bring in new fans to take their place. The token fan services of endlessly parading in old characters only made it worse.
Let Fable be the brand that reaches the broad audience.
Dragon Age was supposed to be a return to old school RPG's and I will never forgive bioware for failing to continue that.
Also, thanks to the numerous clear and obvious paid for earlier reviews (go look at pc-gamer and escapist's reviews versus the day one reviews to see what I mean) has only resulted in the belief I can never pre-order a Bioware game again.
EVER.
