If they added coop (back) to the series I would buy the game every year just like everyone else. Then I would have a reason to get the subscription. Until then I'll keep playing Halo, Gears and BORDERLANDSZOMGBBQHELICOPTERFTW

But let's say I do get it... Can I link my Elite membership across platforms like Portal 2 does with Steam????? THAT ALONE would be the shiznit.

I doubt the stats will be cross platform in dealing with "consoles since specific companies would be peeing a little too close together and you know what happens when you "cross the streams." for e.g. A highly ranked player on PSN mixing with XBL ranks on leader boards? *heads asplode*

There are various community websites that have live stat tracking for BF2, BC2, Crysis 2, MoH, and the upcoming BF3.

Probably because the more "mainstream" audiences have flocked to CoD, not to mention CoD just seems to attract that kind of person. Halo's user base is more or less dedicated Halo players these days so while there are still plenty of d-bags there, it's not as bad as say the Halo 2 and early Halo 3 days.

Exactly – those are the strongest components, and Groups will be free.

Not really for me, but there's also organized competitions, and TONS of data on every map, including heatmaps of each of your games. It's definitely beyond anything else I've seen.

Microsoft and Sony should be taking the hint and adding more matchmaking control to their service... I don't want groups, I want age limit and region locking on my matchmaking via an easy-to-change preference.

Huh, I don't remember that in Bungie.net (mental note: play more Reach multi) but for sure, in some ways this is Activision STILL playing catch up with Bungie from 2007 (!!!). They just added the Theater feature for example, in Black Ops.

But you're right, the Groups and Clans are the killer feature, and one that I think Bungie, as a first-party, probably wasn't able to layer on top of Xbox Live. Now, why Microsoft has been so terribly delinquent in adding this functionality is beyond me. $60/year for Xbox Live is increasingly difficult to justify.

It goes further back then 07.

You used to be able to (not sure if you still can or not) get data on your Halo 2 multiplayer sessions.
Halo 2 also had clans.

So Bungie has been doing this kind of thing since at least 04.

+ You also have Halo Waypoint which adds extra info and comparison stuff you can do natively on your console.

Well, I was thinking specifically of Theater mode and videos which they introduced in '07 with H3. I vaguely remember the pre-H3 Bungie.net service, will have to take your word on it.

And yes, I definitely recall clans in H2 – still shocked neither 3 nor Reach had something similar. I think there's a reason that Bungie is partnering with Activision on its next project.

@chrisgrant Everything I listed has been on Bungie.net since the days of Halo 2. Not quite sure how one misses it that long. You have screenshots of the maps from various angles. Your location is shown and it shows where you stood, who you killed, and what with. Conversely it shows the same thing for every other player. You are also able to filter on a per-player or any other number of mutators. It even goes so far as to let you choose, via slider, a certain frame for viewing all the aforementioned things.

I do agree that Xbox should have some type of overarching clan support in one way. But in another, I think it should be solely on a per-game basis. I can't really fault Microsoft for this.

As for the price of Xbox Live, I am currently paying for the family package, 100$ a year, I can't say it bothers me at all. I have my sister and father enrolled in it, and while they hardly play on live, the point of it being there when they decide to is nice.

The Gold exclusive sales alone are enough to justify the price of admission in my opinion. I typically save double what I pay on Live in DLC/Arcade games.

@Robborboy My point is that the price is one thing, there's been little improvements to the underlying service (ie: VIDEO GAMES) in many years. A per game solution is neat, but how many games can support that? A Call of Duty can, but even Halo 3 and Halo Reach don't have Group or Clan support. A platform-level solution would provide something to every game. Steam Community does this really well.

Damn, Chris, you are pimpin' this Call of Duty Elite service hard. Reminds me of when you had a romantic breakfast with Bobby Kotick, and subsequently defended that awful spin job he did on screwing over Tim Schafer with Brutal Legend.

Look, what it comes down to is: the great online consumer services start with the creative/techies coming up with an idea that brings a ton of value, convenience, and fun to the end users. Then, they throw it over to the business guys and say, "Come up with a pricing model that makes this sustainable."

Ideas like Call of Duty Elite start with the business guys saying, "Hey! Let's charge all of our consumers $8/month for something." Then they throw it over to the creative/techies and say, "Figure out the something part."

@chrisgrant I have to disagree. But that may have to do with my views on what a "clan" is. My view on a clan is a group of people gathered to play a single, solitary game. In this respect Steam's implementation (and by a matter of course any over arching clan support) is terrible.

As for not improving anything on Xbox, I again have to disagree. I spend most of my time at the dashboard. And over the years I can't even begin to describe how much user friendly is has become. And added dash level functions such as Kinect support is something I am very much in love with.

I really am quite at a loss as to why you fault Microsoft for something that devs should be adding by popular requests of the community.

I think it's a neat service that, for me at least, will be free. I don't see a point in getting caught up on the price when a) we don't know it and b) the biggest features for me and I imagine most people, are free: stats and groups.

The video game community likes to treat companies as people and they've vilified this one regardless of what it does. I think a service like Elite is an extremely clever way of making one of the stickiest games ever even stickier.

Re: The Brutal Legend thing, it was an interview, that's what Kotick said. People had already made up their mind before that came out, which I never thought was fair. And we didn't have breakfast – I had a water, and it was in the evening.

I was being silly about the "romantic breakfast" thing, but I agree we should clear up the record. You actually spent an evening, at a hotel, with Bobby Kotick.

I completely agree that Kotick should have the opportunity to give his side, at length, of the Brutal Legend story. But once he did, he restated the "We didn't want to take the financial risk of publishing the game. We fired Tim and made him find his own publisher. But then we wanted our money back." That sort of statement would be ludicrous in any industry, and certainly deserved more critical questioning on your part.

Other gaming outlets that covered the same event have been a little more skeptical about this Elite service. Maybe that's just not your writing style, but it just feels like a less balanced perspective.

I know this is a bit old, but Call of Duty: World at War had heatmaps for every game you'd played on their website - something that I missed very much once MW2 came out, and was very glad that Black Ops included to some extent.

Bungie.net's Groups are a one-way feature – the promise of MW3's implementation of Groups, as facilitated by Elite, is that they will be two-way. Meaning you have your Elite Groups in MW3 and vice-versa. The holy grail is matchmaking and playing only w/ people in your group, instead of strangers. To the best of my knowledge, there is no functionality similar to that with Bungie.net.

@theBrayn Can you matchmake games with your .net groups in the actual games though? Not trying to be rhetorical, I don't know the answer to this. It's just because, if not, then yeah Bungie.net had most of this stuff, but this seems to be taking it to the next level. You guys are harping on Chris and 3hearting yourselves for the stuff they do have the same, but completely ignoring the stuff that isn't like group matchmaking or contests or straight to youtube videos.

More importantly, how can you insane people not want LIVE to have this sort of thing all over? I understand (not really) being happy with LIVE as it is, but why would you want them to NOT add more functionality?

Exactly. Bnet does provide all the crazy detailed stats that have been mentioned here but its purely the groups and clans that make this very appealing, that is, from a "service functions" POV - I'm sure, depending on the price, that getting all the DLC as well will appeal to a lot of people.

Just think about how this functionality will make game-site communities stronger and closer. It's pretty much a game-changer and something I'd expect to see in all of Activision's MP games.

This is a pretty good idea for players who generally roll with a clan - I've never been able to play CoD well in public mercenary matches, but for some reason when I'm playing with people who I've played with in the past, I find my k/d to be upwards of 2.0-3.0. At the same time, this is clearly aimed to make more money off the hardcore players, of which there are legion, and I'm afraid that it'll push even more casual players away from CoD and towards Battlefield.

Looking at the numbers, I think you're confusing what the word "casual" means. CoD is very much a "casual" game at this point – you don't have 30 million players and have each of them being TOTALLY HARDCORE. The entire service is designed to further engage the hardcore players while giving the casual players a more curated experience.
