Metal Gear Solid 3D's interface snapped by Kojima
45
Hideo Kojima gave a glimpse of the playable Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D demo for E3 by way of his Japanese Twitter account today. He noted that he finally crossed a suspension bridge using the "gyro controls." Last year's E3 demo of MGS 3D was little more than an interactive movie.
The image shows off the game's interface on the lower screen, with weapon selection also accessible through the bottom screen.
Kojima, who recently received a promotion in the Konami hierarchy, previously stated that there is something big planned for Metal Gear Solid's 25th anniversary next year, though he's not planning on delivering any announcements at E3 himself.

That would be great if there some sort of touch pop-up menu that disappeared right after you select camo/weapons/items.

I usually don't get too excited about ports but I honestly can't wait for this one. More than any other game I can think of, MGS3 needs that bottom inventory/map screen. Switching camo and checking out my surrounding will no longer be a chore!

As well as eating and healing injuries, I hope. What they added to the sense of immersion they completely destroyed in pacing and flow (not to be confused with Hustle 'n Flow, obviously.)

Dear God I hope they keep the Subsistence camera and update to the controls from MGS4. Snake Eater was my favorite Metal Gear, but like the old Resident Evil games, I sure don't ever want to go back to their archaic control schemes.

My only concern with that is how they're going to handle the camera control on the single-analogue 3DS. I was NOT happy with the way they attempted to do it in Peace Walker. At all.

PEACE WALKER *really* needed to be played on a regular controller(of which I'm glad it's getting a console port, btw). An otherwise fun entry in the MG saga was slightly tarnished by this. Even something as simple as item switching, especially in boss or vehicle confrontation battles, was damn near fatal. I didn't even bother with playing multiplayer much as a result.

Is Peach Walker confirmed on consoles? I've been waiting to play it since I heard the camera was iffy and it was hard as hell to beat some of the bosses without multiplayer co-op. Also, I can't currently find my PSP.

Exactly. Peace Walker was clearly designed with a DualShock controller in mind, and playing with the PSP's available controls never felt like anything less than a compromise (and a frustrating one at that).

Most systems launch with a small library, that's normal. 3DS launch lineup did suck though. They had to get it out before the NGP.

Can you use the gyroscope without messing up the 3D perspective for the 3DS? I know the accelerometer requires you to tilt the device around, but with the gyro you can probably turn your whole body around with the 3DS to make it work just fine.
Is spinning around to play a portable game plausible? Probably not, but i'm glad they found a way to make it more interactive.

Is blowing into a mic and rubbing the screen as fast as you can funny to watch? Yes, yes it is.
But in all seriousness, spinning yourself around doesn't ruin the 3D perspective.

But you know what spinning yourself will ruin?
My morning commute.
See, I play my portables when I'm on the train to work...and I adamantly refuse to be "that guy."
You know, "that guy," the one who stands up in the middle of the train while holding his little video game system and starts spinning around in circles while muttering, "don't fall off, Snake...you can do it!"
Or course, you don't.
Because "that guy" looks like a f*cking crazy person.
The innovation Nintendo brings to their hardware seems to taunt the user to publicly humiliate themselves.
I'm sure the follow-up to the 3DS will offer up some seriously bad-ass games...that I can only play by rubbing my nipples on the screen while screaming voice-activated commands like, "baby loves mayonnaise! Baby needs more!"
I'm on to you, Nintendo.

People already had to make a fool out of themselves with a good number of games on the DS. I'd often see embarrassed players hiding their face away from onlookers as they had to blow into the mic...
:) In all honesty they probably should take themselves less seriously... they still are playing a game in public - no need to be such a snob about it.
But yes, looking like a crazy person spinning around would be a problem for many. .......................... which is solved easily by making the 3DS a popular item amongst the majority of casual players. Get everyone to spin like an idiot, and you'll look normal.

I'm really really worried about this port. I love this game to death but the 3DS is about 8 analog buttons short of properly controlling it.

When you say "properly" do you mean like how you had to use 3 buttons and 2 sticks to actually land a decent shot on The Fear without blowing all your ammo and getting poisoned in the process? I'm sure that could have used a little streamlining.

I'm not sure what you mean. Shooting takes a button and a stick to aim and another button to shoot – not really different from any game with iron sights. Maybe you're thinking of MGS4? I didn't play a lot of that so I don't remember the specifics, but I recall the control scheme being really wacky.
I meant more like how some of the pressure-sensitive options were pretty critical – fire/lower your weapon and kill/hold a guard come to mind.

It's been a while but I seem to remember having to go into 1st person with 1 button, aim with another, zoom with another, 1 stick to move, and 1 stick to shoot. Also, in the case of The Fear, I think I had to be in infra-red to actually see him through his camo. Either way, way too complicated. And yeah, don't even get me started on how many guards' throats I slit while trying to interrogate them. Oof!

Loving how the top screens purely action whilst everything else (which is usually displayed on a singular screen) is placed on the bottom screen. This is going to make most aspects of the game 10x better.

Having map, weapon and camo information on the bottom screen definitely seems like a good move, but like several other people here I'm pretty concerned about the controls. MGS3 incorporated every single button and functionality of the DualShock 2, and the control scheme will have to be changed significantly for the 3DS to replicate it. I'm also curious to see what, if anything, has been changed about the game other than the controls. Is it a straight port, or a comprehensive remake?

I'll buy pretty much any game kojima has a hand in and any game in the MGS franchise. I hope we start to see more of these type of console experiences on the 3DS and less of the stuff that's launched so far. I also want to know what the eff ever happened to the mgs4 trophy patch kojima promised 2-3 years ago on the podcast.
