Good god this is a horrible and bias review. First of all, I don't consider Guerilla a Red Faction game because it was nothing like the originals and horrible to boot. Secondly, the biggest appeal of Armageddon is the cave environment and linearity. This is the first real Red Facrion game of the generation. Not the steaming pile of crap known as Guerilla. Open world and bright lit environments have nothing to do with the series. Apparently the reviewer has never played the original games and considers Guerilla the only other RF game. Truly pathetic. Day 1 purchase for me as every negative thing stated it exactly what I was praying for in this game.

The moment my friend told me that they walked away from the multiplayer that made RF:G great, is the moment that the part of me that was excited for RF:A died. Im sad to hear that not even the single player really lives up to the high bar Guerilla set.

Yeah, this killed it for me. Even if Armageddon's campaign was fantastic, I still wouldn't care for this game. Guerilla to me was entirely about its fantastic multiplayer mode. I just can't believe they abandoned it... they didn't even have to rebuild it from the ground up.

I was super surprised that they went this route for the direct sequel. While Guerrilla had its issues I still loved it and the multiplayer was incredibly fun. All they would need to do is fix some of the open world jank that plagues a lot of games, fix the "wanted" level issues (where farting brought the entire Martian army on your head), and make being in the open world a little more fun. Also...they could give you tons more ammo as it felt the guns never had ammo...maybe there will be a huge price drop or something and I can check this out.

And you know what, they probably would have done all of that - they probably had planned to do all of that. But sadly Guerrilla did not sell very well, the publisher needs hits that sell, and everybody can't seem to stop buying Call of Duty/

One of the major problems with the game industry is, a lot of times when we get bad games, or when publishers make bad decisions, we (the consumer) tend to bring it on ourselves.

Guerrilla was an awesome game. Volition who used to do FPS loooooooooong time ago, has become one of the industry's premier developers of open-world action games this gen, and most likely would have made Red Faction 4 another open world game if given the choice. But then nobody buys Guerrilla - definitely not a full price anyway. And the choice to just play it safe and take the series back into first-person land was made by us and our fellow gamers.

Think about it. When a game cost $20 million to make; $30 million to $50 million if it is an open world experience, plus an additional $20 million or more to market, and no one buys the game despite it actually being good, what really are the chances there will be a sequel at all?

The fact of the matter is, if gamers want a continued stream of quality games, then gamers have to do their part and support quality games when they are released. Nothing tells a publisher to keep allowing the developer to doing whatever it is they are doing, like a game that sells three or four million copies.

I can't even think of all the good games that deserve sequels that were awesome but no one bought. Mirror's Edge comes to mind. And Gun, ActiVision sequeled the hell out of tony hawk, guitar hero and CoD and never thought once about making a Gun2? terrible.
Also M.C. Kids. I'd kill for a part 2.

I definitely have to agree with you on basically everything you said, but I bought RF:G for PC on release and it had the shittiest port I have ever played (usually try to avoid ports that aren't made by original developers). I have been trying since release to get the game to run properly (with bullshit solutions from forums) and finally after upgrading my computer to a monster it runs properly.

I dunno if many others were in my situation but this problem (even tho armageddon pc was made in house) has definitely convinced me not to buy this at full price.

@Tachyonic Cargo What you're saying is absolutely true. I would add though that the credit crunch biting both consumers and games companies over the last few years has made risk taking even more rare than it was previously.

There was a time where a developer could make a good first game, it not sell that well, but then get the green light to make a second in the same mould, relying on the good-will generated around the first to get the sales they were looking for. It was a long term view, which may return at some point, but for the moment is gone. Armageddon seems to be another casualty of this, and it's a shame because I loved Guerilla also, irrespective of whether it was 'true' to the original games.

Another symptom of this risk averse nature though, is games that don't differ enough from the first because the originals did well enough. I include Crackdown 2 and Dead rising 2 in this category (off the top of my head) in a year with a fair few sequels letting us down. My feeling is that if Guerilla had set the world alight sales-wise we could well have been bemoaning the opposite, that it was just Guerilla 1.5, although I personally would have settled for that.

Don't waste your time!!! If this were a $5 game and wasn't related to RF then I would have enjoyed it more.
A key building gets blown up that puts the atmosphere into a series of violent storms... everyone is FORCED underground to live because of this.

Aliens come alive and threaten everyone because of some crazy that "awoken" them. SPOILER (you don't even get to shoot the guy, you run away in a mine cart and he dies in the machine he's in. This happens in a cinematic, you don't get to actually shoot him.)
You find the Queen, of course, and take it on all by yourself. To kill the queen and all other aliens you simply repair that KEY building that FORCED everyone to live underground and then everything is happy again............O.o
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! WHY NOT DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE BEFORE EVERYONE HAS TO LIVE UNDERGROUND???

TERRIBLE

@This Little Man Says His Name Is

Well from what I read, it sounds like the story was the only promising thing in this game. Lets make a little list of points Justin made to showcase why this game is worse shall we?

-open world is gone
-caves, caves and more caves
-bad dialogue (can't really argue that the first was "good" though...)
-destructible environments that somehow don't make you feel like you're destroying the world...

Yea, that damn story is just a KILLER!

I agree. The demo felt like a much shittier Gurriella. It's like this was the first game and the previous should've been the sequel.

Also I hate the new main character. He looks like a tool.

In the game I was rebuilding a bridge I had destroyed and fell into a pip that wasn't finished and got stuck inside of it. So I tried to repair my out thinking there would be a ladder on the other side but no luck. My revolution was over before it started. I like to think he died a horrible lonely death inside that pipe. It's sad really.

I can admire Volition for trying to improve on the the previous game, but considering it had a pretty "winning" formula, it doesn't seem like it was the best choice...

This is the biggest video gaming disappointment of the year for me. I am at least glad that I saw it coming as soon as Volition started releasing details about the game. Why take an immensely fun but flawed open world game that allows for destruction that can only leave you giddy and turn it into a dark tunnel crawl, and where is my multiplayer at? It is very rare that I get into a game's multiplayer, but I had a blast with Guerrilla. It was the most fun I have had with multiplayer since my days of marathon Team Fortress sessions (and I do mean Team Fortress not 2 or classic). I really hope another Red Faction game is made that harkens back to Guerrilla. The only things that should survive this game are the magnet gun and the rebuild ability.

I would stop quoting/using THREE SISTERS before contemporary Hollywood picks it up as a new FOX "cross-dressing" sitcom with Charlie Sheen, Andy Dick, and Gilbert Gottfried, calling it the "feel good show of the year".

...Or worse, a videogame made of such.

the current Red Faction is a game about burly space marines fighting aliens

This is what happens when people whine and complain about sequels being too similar to their predecessors. We saw the same thing in Gears 2.

Companies try and change everything up, and it just ends up being much worse.

Just give us upgrades and newness in our sequels, don't redefine the formula because a few internet trolls scream "roster update!" or "xxxxx 1.5" when they haven't even played it.
