I feel yeah, it took a long time for Trash Drop to show up here too so keep waiting, I'm sure it will come up some time.

I'm all in favour of promoting indie games but you should at least filter out awful games like this.

Hey, I hope this means you bought it and played it. Working 10 hours a week isn't paying the bills too much so even your one dollar can help me.

You say that as a gamer but I can't tell you how many people I have watched try this and instantly think you have to catch the trash bags... they die very quickly to say the least.

I have a feeling the creator of this was more going for a cool retro look and feel than for a fun game. I personally think he would be more successful giving it out for free and putting iAds in it. As others said, dodging from the sky has been done and re-done. But I do like the graphics and the music. If he did everything himself that's pretty impressive to me. I program but I can't create art or music to save my life.

@collinc

I have been thinking about this but I have two obstacles for iAds.

1. I have other simple apps (and when I say simple I mean simple) that do have iAds in them but iAds are all dependent on downloads and usage so even if my downloads shoot up, my income might go down. It is a gamble.

2. Because I am not a very good programmer I needed the help of a game engine to create it which of course since this was the first one (and I have no money) I got the cheaper version instead of the pro version. And of course the pro version adds the ability to add iAds.

Though it might switch soon, the pro version also added the ability to add gamecenter, I just need to figure out how the heck I'm gonna raise the money (which is why I'm hoping this does ok and I can have Trash Drop pay for it).

That makes sense. My company has an app on the store at the moment (not a game) that has iAds in it, and last I checked I think we had made about $5. I wonder though, some of the apps listed on the Top Grossing section are free. I don't know of how else they would be the top grossing apps if they aren't supported by ads in some way. That's what makes me think an iAd supported game must do somewhat well.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I'm finishing up my game at the moment. I'm hoping to get it featured here. I had no money to pay an artist so I got a friend from college to do it for me for a percentage of the sales. I'm using cocos2d to develop my app. There's a lot more programming involved though. I'm hoping it will sell enough to pay off my student loans.

The app store truly is an amazing place for an indie developer.

Yeah, I think those free ones on the top grossing are through in app purchasing but I could be wrong. I have heard from other developers who have had top free apps with iAds making a very good chunk of change from it.

I guess it's hard right now because of the "pro" version price of the engine. I have tried cocos2d but I'm a much more visual guy so it is still hard for me to work without some way to be able to see instant changes. I do web work and don't mind using code there but it is because I can usually see the results of my code right away.

Anyways I hope you can get your game featured! Let me know when it comes out!

Ah that makes sense. I didn't even think about that.

Yeah I do find myself running the game over and over again to place certain assets exactly where I want them. I was hoping my boss was going to do a standalone level editor that could export levels into xml and import them into the game, but he never got around to doing it for me.

Thanks I hope so too! And I wish you the best on yours, if it does really well you might be able to hire yourself a programmer or take a couple classes at your local community college. I only emailed them last night but I haven't heard back yet. I guess we'll see. :)

Apparently Joystiq's userbase is filled with assholes. Give the dude a break. Sure, the genre is bloated with bad games. However, that doesn't make his achievement any less respectable.

Good job, Shelbey. I like what I see. However, after years of programming on calculators, surely you have some idea you've been iterating on forever. Let's see that one.

@ch3burashka I hardly consider two people a userbase filled with assholes. They just stick out because there are so few comments on the post. If you're including what I said in that category, I believe I was supportive while still being realistically critical.

Hi I'm Shelbey by the way.

I really don't mind too much, I've been a reader of Joystiq for a long time and kind of knew that the people who comment aren't always positive and helpful. I just hope that people would try it before they diss it. (I know I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one)

Hey guys, as the developer I can tell you with a completely bias opinion that this is the best game on the iPhone/iPod. If you do end up getting it and have thoughts, found a bug, want to tell me how horrible/bad/annoying/good/fun/addicting/etc. it is you can contact me through my website at shelbeyhuntsapps.com!

Or you can just post here and keep my email from getting all cluttered.

QUICK REVIEW FROM SOMEONE WHO BOUGHT THE GAME:
Its worth $0.99. Its made with Game Salad, which basically means there was no programming involved so in a way he kinda cheated, but the game is fine if you overlook that fact. The achievements are a nice touch, but they don't make the game any more enjoyable and can easily be ignored. The art is really nice in some areas (like the mountains and HUD) but in other areas it seems very half assed. For example, in the cinematic at the beginning the apartment that the 4 kids are living in is very poorly drawn, and even the grass that the player stands on during gameplay seems inconsistant with the pixel art in the clouds and mountains. I give it a 3/5.

@mguniverse

Thanks for the review

Unfortunatly the cinematic trailer had a lot more going on but I had to dumb it down a lot otherwise it would have taken forever to load or ran slowly (this is mostly because of gamesalad).

Does the grass stand out because it has more detail in it than the clouds and the mountains? I guess I never saw it clashing but I am always trying to improve.

Anyways, thanks for trying it!

4 hearts for an endless game that has a concept that has been done to death.

I love arcade games with the one more time mentality, but it looks like it would drag on forever.

This kind of reminds me of "The incident" (check it out!) on the appstore, but watered down.

Mind you I haven't played it, but that trailer doesn't sell me.

Why is this game newsworthy again...? I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but I have friends that have made more complex games using flash / actionscript. This is about as complex as the old Game n Watch that I had as a kid where Mickey Mouse has to catch falling eggs forever...

Is this kid in highschool? If so, then yeah this isn't a bad accomplishment. But otherwise, there are a lot more engaging games on the iPod market for a buck.

Your power of observation boggles the mind, it's not like I stated that several times in other comments. Man, by what you wrote I can totally tell that you read every word of that article and then posted that really thoughtful and helpful comment.

I mean, it's not like you just saw the title, watched about 10 seconds of the video and immediately decided you had enough knowledge about the subject to comment on it, right? That's only something a little kid would do and obviously you are a mature adult.

@(Unverified) Wow, so now I'm supposed to sift through every comment of an article? I'm pretty sure that reading the article itself ought to be sufficient. 10 seconds of this video is literally enough time to figure out the gist of this game... and if you think it isn't then you are really thinking too highly of it. If you want to snag gamers, why don't you show some of your "epic story" in the trailer? Otherwise it looks like a rather simplistic endless flash game.

Look, I work in games, and that's a large reason why I judge them so harshly. The market has a glut of junk to sift through, so when I see something that's potentially adding to the pile, it makes me just shake my head. There are FREE games out there that offer more; hell, I just tried Plimpton's Video Falconry on a whim the other day because it looked so bizarre that I couldn't resist. I also get irritated when I see someone adding to that glut when there are indie folks I know that are trying to make really cool and unique games out there.

A little word of friendly advice; if you want to make it as a dev, grow some thicker skin. It's common for someone to criticize something you've worked on, whether you think you deserve that negative feedback or not. No one will coddle you in the industry.
