The Call of Duty Elite news train keeps on keeping on, with UK paper the Guardian reporting that a premium membership will include "exclusive access" to a Call of Duty-themed web TV series. "We have engaged some top Hollywood talent to create linear video content that will be exclusive to Elite members," Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg tells the Guardian. "That content is inspired by Call of Duty."
With Elite intended to maintain, or even increase, interest in the Call of Duty brand between its annual releases, some linear video programming could certainly help bridge that gap and keep subscribers coming back to Elite. "If you're a sports fan, there are lots of ways for you to connect with that hobby, that passion, not just on the day that the games are played, but throughout the week, and we wanted to give [Call of Duty players] real entertainment value," Hirshberg says.
And that's about all we have in the way of details. No word on whether the Hollywood talent Activision's procured will create live action, ala Find Makarov, animated, ala Halo Legends, or machinima content, ala John Hillcoat's excellent Red Dead Redemption short. Hirshberg says, "We're not going to give much more detail until we have something to show. That'll be later in the year."

I'm just gonna say it: for hardcore Call of Duty fanboys, I don't think this is a bad idea.

I think this is only for the fanboys...i don't see many casual players going for this.
I like how they make it sound like because they launch some membership website they are going to randomly bring in all these "NEW" players. By now I feel like practically any average/pro/casual gamer has played/heard of/rented/etc some COD game in a way/shape/form.
TO ME this is just another paycheck for them, nothing much more. And hopefully this isn't their idea of "innovation" for the COD series.

Okay, but I just don't understand why leveraging a popular brand in an attempt to make money is inherently shady or wrong. I certainly won't pay for it, but if Activision can find a market willing to, more power to them. As for innovation, well, innovation is tricky. You don't necessarily have to do something first or even best, you just have to convince people that you did. With regard to Call of Duty, it will either evolve or it won't. If it does, we'll get something great again, like we did with CoD4. If it doesn't something else will eventually snag the shooter crown and we'll all play that for a few years until it too gets bogged down.

@A Sandwich - I kind of feel like it would be a great idea for Activision to go this route a little bit more forcefully. Abandon the yearly releases, update multiplayer as needed with new maps and new modes or whatever, release new single player campaigns every once in awhile, add in new features, etc. The people who want CoD games are getting new stuff (and paying a monthly fee!), the people who buy new releases just for multiplayer updates can be enticed to sign up, and the people who couldn't give two craps about the series are spared the constant "it's a cultural phenomenon!" stuff that happens every single November.

@A Sandwich It's not a bad idea for anyone. But you should know people now a days. All they can seem to muster is complaints against everything.
In this day and world.. Gaming is a business .. and a business needs to bring in more money.
I personally will most likely get this if I can keep on track of putting money on my prepaid.

Ummm... Last I checked I can play COD Everyday of the week anyway. Besides I can pick up my phone and call my buddies or jump on facebook and send them an IM and be playing COD in a matter of minutes.
I don't think I need to pay for something I can already do for just paying my Internet and phone bill.

okay, then the service isn't for you. However, I work 9-5 every day, at a menial office job that affords me lots of time to cruise the internet. This would be perfect for that, so I could literally never be away from my crippling CoD addiction.
Oh god.
Oh god. What have I become?

Like, I said. This idea has it's niche in the community, I just don't believe as many people are gonna go for it as Activision hopes. Besides, working 9-5 doesn't mean you can't also take 30 minutes out after work and play a couple games of COD.
However, I do see you point. If you were logging into facebook or on your cellphone talking about COD all day, your employer may get suspicious...

I hope BF3 is successful. I'm not saying anything is wrong with CoD, but it would be nice to have some popular alternatives...

I feel like if they made a live-action tv series it would be too gi joe-esque if it is at all similar to the layout of a COD storyline.
Ultimately I feel this "ELITE" stuff is pure junk and i pity the fool who dishes out the money to subscribe. This "TV" series is just another means to jack up membership prices for this kind of content.

It would be nice to get away from all these war shooters and go back to the simpler times when games featured cartoony mascots jumping over things.
I guess only Nintendo and Sega make those games now... :(

I would, tbh. I'd much rather play a new CB (assuming for this, that it's high quality) than a new Mario Galaxy. I simply don't care about Mario and that world anymore, I'd rather spend time in a world I haven't for a long time and that I really enjoyed back in the day.
But, that's as someone who's grown up with the Nintendo brands and just doesn't connect with them enough anymore to want to spend time playing them (when there's other games I'd rather play). /shrug

It's like the games industry HAS to only appeal to the "bro" crowd of over-testosteroned males. What would happen if cartoon industry got rid of Looney Tunes and SpongeBob and transformed into gritty Stripperella-type shows?

I sincerely hope people don't buy into this stuff...
Because what's there to stop other titles from joining this absolutely terribad model.
DLC's alright in some cases, I'll say. Having players spend even more money in hopes of getting something cool, when in reality there could be months of nothing good happening? That's downright villainous.

Here's an Idea. Let us play for money. Then you could broadcast those games live. I'd get in on this for a chance to win a cash prize.

Based on the logo above, I would say actors they've acquired are the likes.of Sylvestor Stallone, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, and many other action stars.

I think it's pretty funny that Activision thought, "yes! Let's use this cheap looking, Photoshop bevel effect on our logo! Oh, oh! Can I add a drop shadow to Call of Duty? SWEET!"

Based on the logo, this is apparently Call of Duty: The Expendables.

SO MUCH HATE! This is getting out of hand. Special websites, tv shows, increasingly expensive dlc. I swear, its like Activision just treats its customers like money trees or something. Have they ever thought of, you know, doing something nice for the community? Or would that require them to use some of the $100 bills they use for firewood?

I'm just glad it provides a true hearted fan service, rather than it being something that people pay and they immediately get a higher advantage than the rest of players. To be honest, I think people are overreacting and they do have a free portion as well.

This is akin to paying for HBO On Demand. You love it, but you say to yourself from time to time, " I already have HBO, so why am I paying for another channel that's going to show the same stuff I can just wait for on the main HBO channel?"

I would like to see how they keep the series "exclusive" to elite members...people will upload them to the net for all to see the minute it comes out...
This whole project spells fail, but I don't blame them for going for it...Anybody entertained by the same game with different skin 4 years in a row with that much enthusiasm may go for it.
I think they would get a better response if they actually spent that innovation on developing a new game engine instead of cashing in on a declining series
they got all of this Elite stuff banking on a game that is not made by the original talent that made it great...
I predict big faill, and the series will go the way of guitar hero soon
