CD Projekt on The Witcher 2's sales, update and bringing the game to Xbox 360
46
Joystiq got to meet up with CD Projekt on the windy roof of a hotel in Venice, CA earlier today where the company's "Summer Days" streamed press conference was going on and have a quick chat about what was announced. Senior Producer Tomasz Gop and level designer Marek Ziemak kindly answered our questions, the first of which was how the company felt the Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings launch went. "We can dream about more," said Gop, "but this was really good. We didn't set a milestone where we'd be happy or not. This is really good, we're not disappointed at all."
Some of the game's players, including our reviewer, were slightly turned off by the high difficulty early on, and while that curve will be smoothed in the game's first big patch, out today, Gop says CD Projekt never said things would be easy. "A lot of people chose normal difficulty setting and they thought it would be like normal in other games," he told us. "But from the very beginning ... we said it's a hardcore game. Normal is slightly more hardcore than other normal difficulty settings." The patch will also fix key bindings, an issue with lock-on during combat and a money exploit that Gop and Ziemak laugh about. "We got a couple of hundred emails," jokes Gop, "about, 'Do you know that you can get infinitely rich at the beginning of Witcher 2?'"
CD Projekt also announced that the game would be out on the Xbox 360 by the end of the year, something the developer could only do after the PC launch. "First of all," says Ziemak, "we were 100% focused on the PC version, because that's our way of creating things." CD Projekt tried to port its first game before, and had to put the project on hold when it was clear the title wasn't good enough to release.
"The biggest lesson we learned from actually canning the whole project," says Gop, "was if we wanted to do it, we'd have to do it in house," and Witcher 2 is being done with an in-house team as an "adaptation," not a port. Does that mean that after the Xbox version is out, that same team will work on bringing the game to PS3? Gop doesn't rule it out. "We would love to," he says, before admitting that decision has yet to be made. But if you're worried about an exclusive for any reason other than a lack of resources, don't, says Gop. "No," he jokes, "Microsoft has not bought us."

Hopefully CD Projekt maintains their development ways.
Create and polish the PC version
and later adapt (whatever CDP means in this) towards the console builds.
That way everyone is happy. PC has the most differentially between all the platforms. It has a different community. Developers need to give the gamers the freedom of setting their own settings, allowing them to change the game to what they like, and create unique mods. It is about Gaming Freedom and if you take that away from us. You better darn right we will COMPLAIN!!!
While on consoles, the build can be exactly the same and no one is going to complain. It is about gaming history. Mods and custom settings aren't excepted on console builds but on PC is a def. yes.
Please keep this up CDP. The Witcher 2 is a masterpiece, everyone should have the right to play it. =p Maybe you can teach a few developers on how to make a good game and keep a direct relationship with the amazing gaming community.

wait I think adapt means what I just said. DUH! Make the game adapt to the platform and the community it is on.
Way better then porting a game which is essentially copying and pasting the game on every platform.

Definitely happy to see these guys succeed. I'm having a great time with the Witcher 2 so far.
As far as the complaints over difficulty.... I might be in the minority here... but I welcome a game that actually makes me think strategically and challenges me from beginning to end. Those games stand out and are much more rewarding than those that just wear out my mouse as I incessantly left click on everything that moves on my screen.

It makes me wonder when I read the reviews how much of the negativity is based off of either reviewers mistaking a targeted hardcore demographic for difficulty flaws or reviewers not being part of the targeted demographic entirely.
It simply seems that many of the complaints ignore the fact that there was a very clear and conscious target of hardcore gamers.

Damn, I have a huge backlog and was going to wait on this one for a while but I really want to support these guys. It's nice to finally see someone treat the PC gaming community right and I enjoyed the first game.

I wouldn't be shocked if the EU or Poland would block a takeover by Microsoft in this case.
Poland because they are trying to build their own tech industry.
E.U. because they have been already eying microsoft for anti-trust issues.
Same would probably go for any large publisher trying to buy them out.

The only thing that annoys me about these games that people port from PC to console is that they often neglect to bring the original game along for the ride. Like with Crysis 2 as well as this game, some of us console gamers would like to experience the original title, as well.
I mean I might actually play this game if it's as good as people say (and this coming from someone who normally loathes WRPGs), I would just like to play the first one too.

While I can't speak to The first Witcher game, I just think tech wise that the first Crysis game isn't capable of making the switch over to consoles, without it being a different game, of course. The maps are probably the biggest hurdle, just too big for the consoles.
It's the same thing with BF3, consoles are getting smaller maps and server sizes since they can't handle it. Luckily DICE does it right by making sure PC games aren't hampered by the console limitations.
Glad to see The Witcher 2 is making it over to consoles, I'm interested to see how it is received.

What they meant is that they will adjust the game performance and usability of controls for different areas of the game to match consoles and their performance.
Don't worry, you will still get same experience but better.

I don't understand how the game being on console automatically makes it a better experience. I mean, if you haven't a PC that can run it, I suppose any experience is better than none at all, but otherwise I say that your previous point's debatable.

No, you'll get the same experience.
I don't see how they could make it better, without including 'bonus' stuff, which they haven't indicated.
Graphically it cant perform as strong as a PC is capable of, and you can already hook up a 360 controller and it's all set up and good to go (like 90% of PC games.) So, if its a controller preference that's already there.
...Unless you know something everyone else doesn't.

Ah, I was reffering to Crysis 1, not the witcher 2, should've clarified.
Just providing an example of why some things just can't make the switch over.
Load times in Witcher 2 won't bad, If you load it onto the console hdd I'm sure it'd be alright, maybe a bit slower load times compared to the PC ,(though that would certainly vary depending on configuration.)
CDP took care to make sure they could make the transition pretty flawless, in terms of interfaces n stuff (and made did a good job of making sure it didn't have consolitis!) So I imagine that behind the scenes things were considered as well. If you'll recall this was initially going to be released simultaneously with the console releases.

great game but massive ATI bug that brings a BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT SPOT wherever u go! it actually hurts your eyes! I think I have to accept the fact that ATI drivers are very poor when compared to nVidia. this past year ATI has been lagging behind release date and the average time to patch after a title launches is around 4 weeks. Examples, are Dragon Age 2 and Brink - massive ATI problems on launch day

Not sure which card you have, but I havent been having any issues with my ATI on any of those games, so it sucks to hear you're having issues
If it is any consolation DA2 had more issues with nvidia cards out of the gate than ATI, same goes for The Witcher 2.
I certainly agree with that nvidia certainly has a stronger Driver set.
ATI has certainly been improving though.

thats weird, i have a 6950 and have had no problems with either of those games, given i only played brink for 40 hours LOL.
Maybe its for the older hardware that is getting all the problems

@Draugdraugr - I could be wrong, but I think that is a crossfire issue. That is what I've been hearing anyway.
This is why I don't go crossfire/SLI; I like my games to work, without having to wait on a patch or new drivers.

Hey Joystiq,
Nice that you mention sales in Title of this article but you forgot to actually include numbers for those sales, but no worries I got your back.
CD Projekt Red sold 400K units in first week, this includes physical and digital copies sold to end consumers.
This number does not include number of copies sold to retailers.
You are welcome.

@captplut9465 The Witcher 2 is an evolution to Witcher 1, where as Dragon Age 2 was a complete departure from the gameplay of Dragon Age 1.
I played the Witcher 2 on my PC with a 360 controller, and it was nice with the controller, worked well with a mouse, but in this case I prefered the controller. The menus and gameplay are designed well for a controller. To me this game feels as much at home on a PC as it would on a console. Of course that 512mb of ram limitation may limit the size or increase load times in some areas. I thought the Witcher 2 handled load times wonderfully on the PC hopefully they can pull it off with the smaller resources of the console.

I guess I am bitter at the PC losing another exclusive to the consoles. It would be fine if the PC got a game like L.A. Noire, but that NEVER happens. Sigh.
The consoles have too many exclusives and the PC needs all it can get. PC is truly dying. : (

Man I hope the game continue to sell well for them, and hopefully the 360 version will do over a million copies. The game truly deserves it and I'm glad I bought it off of Steam.
I'll probably even buy the 360 version for Christmas just for the heck of it, only because I think they're so awesome and deserve it.

While Gop insists sales are "really good" so far, it feels like this week's $10 price cut came awful quick. Could be a pure marketing move, sure. But to introduce a product and already reduce its price two or three weeks later seems hasty. From a merchandising perspective, that just trains your customers to expect a price reduction before they buy. Witcher 2 is still too new to want your customers in frame of mind.
Posted: Jun 3rd 2011 6:27AM radioactivez0r said
@Sensical That logic is why I don't buy EA games right away, because for some reason they keep getting $20 drops on Amazon with 2-4 weeks of release.

*Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I'll Witcher you, tomorrow! Except I already have it for PC!*
Non-singing side-note: I almost came to blows with my roommate arguing over The Witcher 2's difficulty and how I couldn't comprehend his extreme hatred at the start, purely based on the number of times he died. He and many other gamers who flooded forums with their whining refused to set the game on easy and wrote it off as terrible because they were not doing very well on normal (or rather, horribly). I just don't understand it, is there really SO much shame in playing a game on easy? It does say in the description for easy that it is the mode to use if you want to move the story along. I guess we forget we are playing games and not interactive movies, and in doing such, sometimes we have to play parts over and over to get it right. I can't believe the audacity of people labeling a game as poorly made simply because they refuse to play on a different setting. Again, I already have the game of PC (and it's phenomenal), but for both achievements and to support CDProjekt Red, the 360 copy will be in my hands on release day. White Wolf, away!
