I didn't get the love for the Star Trek reboot movie. I thought it was dumber than a Michael Bay movie. Is it just JJ Abrams fanboys drinking the Kool Aid?

Because it was an awesome alternate reality, with amazing CGI and an intriguing plot.

@FriedConsole

It was fun.

It was just...a fun movie.

Furthermore, it wisely served as a love letter to the awesome ToS-era, which is way cooler than the jargon-filled series that came after (DS9, Enterprise et al).

I don't even like J.J.'s other shit.

My gal made me sit through the entire first season of Lost and I actually sustained ocular injuries from rolling my goddamned eyes too often...

...and don't even get me started on Alias. Ugh.

But Star Trek...that was a bit of all right. The tone of the movie reminded me of ToS at it's best, with some great banter between characters. I was totally fine that no one spent twenty minutes discussing the ins-and-outs of how Borgs used the transwarp conduits to leave their Unicomplex and blah blah blah whogivesashit.

Not to mention the guy who played Bones totally nailed that shit.

I totally agree with you Fried, everything doesn't need a friggin reboot!!!! Sure its an alternate universe or what not, but it wasn't a very good one. Why does the Enterprise look like an Apple store with Star Wars prequels quality!?!? JJ, build upon the ST franchise! Do not attempt to reboot it! Ugh.

@FriedConsole Despite what you may think I really doubt JJ Abrams has that many fanboys. The film was a massive success and not just with trekkies and 'nerds'.

I'll agree with above that the biggest factor was that it was fun, with a well chosen cast and a solid script.

Skeptical about the game, although as it isn't an actual adaptation of a film it could surprise me. Makes me wonder if we are going to get the long overdue Star Trek '2' announcement sometime soon though, what with Super 8 all but in the can.

@Shadowbender It probably won't come out until late 2012 at the earliest, from what I've been reading everywhere. Script still isn't done. They may even move it all the way till NEXT summer.

Yup. And with Abrams still doing press and awaiting the release of Super 8, and don't even know if he's thinking about Star Trek 2 at the moment. They apparently have a highly-detailed story outline though, so I think in terms of writing the screenplay, it shouldn't take too long.

Have you actually given STO a decent chance? It has changed a lot since it's first release. It's not a run around, shoot em up, game like Halo, and that Star Trek Xbox Arcade game.

I really loved the movie, so I am excited for the prospect of a game, especially if the movie's writers are in on it. I just hope that because it's not based on an actual movie, they won't have to put it out in only a few months and it will end up sucking :|

The concept art above is reminiscent of that Danny Boyle film, Sunshine. Though I'd rather see Capt. Kirk keep Chris Pine's likeness rather than Cillian Murphy's. Cillian's face has this undercooked look about it that's always unnerved me.

@Mainer82 As opposed to what, TOS? Shatner and Nimoy were hardly gunslingers. I think the only way to adapt the original show, with its pacing, would be an adventure game, and we already got two great PC adventures. For an action shooter, I think Trek '09's the only era that makes any sense.

And if you meant TNG, god help you.

To explain my previous comment,

I simply meant that Abram's version of Star Trek is an action-packed, dumb downed, sexed up version of Trek for the younger generation. Each of the other Trek series were different from one another, but they were all mature, solid stores, logical (for the most part if you over look some of ToS' episodes) and more scientifically balanced.

Abram took some of the races and characters from TOS and slapped them onto actors who to me at least seemed like they didn't care about the Trek "universe" and just wanted to get paid for acting.

As far as Trek games, out of the ones I've played, I could only call Star Trek Online the closest thing to a Trek game.
