Not really, loyalty was high, percentage of people to make the switch was pretty tiny. To be honest, barring the CoD players, is there much reason to switch because of downtime? All those trophies gone, all those PSN purchases gone, all those DLC gone.

Nah, far too much hassle, even if people were slightly annoyed with Sony.

So the PSN being down for aproximately 1% of the PS3's lifetime has caused this quite substantial difference

@kidable No doubt it had an impact. News of it was widespread, and it took them 6 weeks to get it back up and running (counting all the functions). And at that, it's still a bit bumpy this morning.

I love my PS3, but any way you slice it, PSN just doesn't live up to the standards of Xbox Live.

From what I understand, the chart shows the annual console sales figures for each console in the US - so it should have been a bar chart rather than connected lines (since the figures aren't supposed to stack year-on-year). According to the chart, the Xbox 360 has sold around 27 million in the US (55 million is global sales): Year 1 = 1mil, Year 2 = 4mil, Year 3 = 5mil, Year 4 = 5mil, Year 5 = 5mil, Year 6 = 7mil.

@kidable:

"@Acosta02 How is it not? Back up what you mean with facts instead of giving 1 line answers and thinking you're cool."

I can tell you why the PSN outage had no effect on this chart:

Since the chart only shows annual sales, sales figures that include the time period of the PSN outage haven't even been released yet (and even if sales figures were released for that time period, the chart would only show the effect of the PSN outage in the US)!

@brotherfranciz I'm not talking about the 'year-over-year' per cent increase, I'm talking about the comment that it was the highest selling console of the past 11 months, and seeing as though the PSN outage was last month, I'm thinking the PSN outage had a "little" (note that I said little, I'm not trying to start shit by touting out how PSN is terrible, I like PSN). If I'm not trying to start shit, why are you man? Creating that whole paragraph aimed against me over something so little and trivial, and considering how my comment wasn't aimed at you. Got a lot of growing up to do, kid.

Sounds to me like you ARE bitching :/

Loyalty was high, why that equates to 'fanboy loyalty' is beyond me :/
Not everyone has money to splash like you obviously. I merely stated that loyalty was high, which means 'people kept their PS3s', I couldn't give a monkey's arse if they bought 360s or not during that time. I know that nobody I know that doesnt own a 360 already wasn't desperate enough to go out and spend £100 extra quid because a network was down. Amongst my group of friends, that's considered pretty damn sad. If you bought a 360 because you genuinely wanted one, fair enough, I have one, I'm all for more people I care about on my friendslist, but JUST because PSN went down? You need a life ¬_¬

@Spunky Monkey 190906 How come *I* need a life, just because I'm analyzing why the 360 did so well in the last few months. *I* didn't go out and buy a 360 just because PSN was down, I have more sense than that, but I'm talking on a UNIVERSAL perspective. You say " Amongst my group of friends" Ok, sure, your LITTLE group of friends. Who cares about your little group of friends? How many of your friends play CoD INCESSANTLY? Hm? Maybe 2 or 3? MILLIONS of gamers play CoD DAILY! These are ADULTS with JOBS! Who DO have the money to go out and spend 2 or 300 bucks on new console, JUST to play a game! This is why I compared your 'loyalty' comment to 'fanboyism', because I saw no sense as to why a 20 or 30 year old with a wife and a decent salary would go "PSN is down? And Sony have my information? Should I buy an Xbox? No wait, SONY FOREVAR!!" No, they wouldn't do that. Which is why they bought an Xbox. Which is why I think a "LITTLE" of that surge of Xbox's sold were down to them.

Oh and one more thing. " I couldn't give a monkey's arse if they bought 360s or not during that time"

...then why are you on an article about 360 sales? *facepalm*

But you're badgering on about UNIVERSAL, did I not just say that loyalty was high? Need I pound that into your head any more then I did? Its been on every news site for the last few days, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to do a little research. I made the point that I couldn't give a monkeys arse because that had nothing to do with the point I was making, you went off on a tangent like you're doing again, that has nothing to do with whether or not I'm in a 360 thread. Yes, there may have been people switching over to 360, but like I said, most of those were CoD players, I see you've at least noticed that point.

There's a big difference between 'switching' like you stated and 'buying to add', the only people 'switching' consoles because of the PSN outage were the melodramitic ones, which is why it does not suprise me most of those were CoD players.

This is why I don't think the number of people leaving made that much of a difference to 360 sales, besides, 3 mill is still high and the percentages I've seen for switchers seems a lot lower then that.

But why any of that has anything to do with being a fanboy is just questionable, so sticking with one console makes you a fanboy? How does that logic work?

-MS is playing dirty, trying to one up Jack Tretton before E3 has even started, thwarting his "charts, graph's and (my fave) attachment rate %'s.

It impacted me, but only indirectly. When they slashed the price of the non-Slim 360 Elites at the announcement of the Slim, I knew I wouldn't find a better price for a long time. I wasn't even in the market for a 360 since I already had a Wii and a PS3, but the price was just too good.

The only thing stopping 360 from pulling away further sales-wise are Sony is slightly ahead in Europe(1-3 million) and way ahead in Japan (6 million, but who cares, Japan hasn't been relevant outside of Japan for 5 years now).

How easily people forget disasters, but are you just that close-minded? And he's not wearing Sony fanboy glasses, Sony could easily pull a marketing scheme if that department actually had any brains, or they have too much self-pride, thinking that all PS2 owners are eventually going to go to the PS3.

fact is that Year lead that MS had is dwindling...period...

Sony's problem is that they got cocky, then they realised that cockyness wasn't working ¬_¬. This generation has been a wake up call for them.

I'm glad they are still doing well despite all the trouble they've had, YLODs, Bad Press, Hacking, Piracy, HD-DVD vs Blu-ray, etc etc

To be honest, for a company in third place (and not too far behind at that) that has gone through all that chaos, they haven't done half bad, colour me impressed, most other companies would have probably buckled by now, but not Sony, oh no, they are still driving on. But the fact of the matter is that, if they had launched PS3 earlier, did less copy catting (even if they 'thought' of ideas first), more pushing in areas that needed it, kept more promises, less arrogant jibber jabber, less attacking hackers and more security, less slagging off the competition and more backwards compatability options, etc, Sony would be untouchable this generation and possibly onwards.

Funny how things turn out ey.

I fully agree with that...and I have a feeling that Nintendo will suffer that fate next gen....but all the old folks and Soccer moms wont see a need to rush out and buy the new Nintendo Console...they are going to HAVE to market to gamers....

I'm fairly sure Sony has learned their lesson...and MS will be more than fine...they wanted to be in as many homes as possible.....and be in as many living rooms as possible...and looks to be accomplished....that was their goal all the way back in 2000....and they have achieved it....its only a matter of time before they get the Xbox as a centerpiece....I can imagine a few people that will not even ask for a cable box...but will use their 360's if the option is there....

You aren't using VGChartz are you? Tell me you aren't.

For the past year or so they have been padding PS3 sales with Asian regions where their numbers can't be easily compared and throwing those in with the European region to make it look like the PS3 is "winning" there.

They have further removed the country by country numbers for the european region on their weekly reports to keep people from seeing just how well the 360 is doing in developed countries.

Their PS3 numbers for the region are so hyper-inflated they can't count.

Everything you have said is twisted to just make you sound right, and then you bring up "simple math" as if saying that means everything you have said is right and none debatable (like simple math)

first, this is US CHARTS ONLY... meaning ONLY IN THE US... the PS3 and 360 gap GLOBALLY is minuscule compared to how it was in 2006. the 360 selling in the US over the PS3 does not make it some sort of gaming power house that reckons to be messed with. It mean that in THE UNITED STATES the 360 has sold better then the PS3. Period.

second, what you said about Japan is only reflecting how ass hurt you are that Sony happens to be selling well at home, THAT WHY TO YOU think its non relevant or that japan hasnt had anything good for 5 years (like the moron you are)...

how you got upvoted by the same people who jizz their fcuking pants every time they port a Japanese game over to the US shows me exactly how 2 faced gamers are (or just this website)

Throw your tantrum about Japan's software developers being 5 years behind if you want, that doesn't change the fact that they are. I'm not arguing anymore. Go back to whatever Japanese developed garbage you see fit to defend, I'll go play Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and Mass Effect.
