Wait a min.
So if I buy this device, I would have to take a cellular contract?

No. Just No.

No. Unless you wanted 3G access.

You only need AT&T if you get the more expensive 3G model. There will be Wifi only models for those that don't need 3G. Also iPads don't require contracts so I would imagine the Vita won't either.

@maemikemae Im sure itll be prepaid stuff. You dont need PSV on contract since your paying 300$ for it already. No other fees. Im sure its like verizon 3g. Pay per month.

Why is everyone assuming only ATT will carry it? AT&T is the 'official' carrier, not exclusive carrier... am i missing something?

@NineT9 well verizon and sprint use a different part of the wireless spectrum so it they will not be compatible with the PSVita 3G T-Mobile on the other hand uses the same band as AT&T but they are in the process of being bought out by AT&T as it is not sure if it will go through yet but AT&T has the best lobbyist that money can buy.

$300 for 3G Vita, and AT&T rocks for services. Costs a pretty penny but I've had zero issue with their network for 10 years now. I'm in a city area (Detroit) though, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Pretty sure that does have something to do with it.
AT&T doesn't even cover my house or the nearby town.

Why not sprint Sony ? WHY ?

Because sprint doesn't need to pay off companies to use their network.

Or because Sprint has a shit network? Everyone at Best Buy (when I was employed there) rocked it because it's cheap w/emp discount, but bitched about how it drops calls or gets no coverage. I rather pay for something that works then throw money at a service that's unreliable. Verizon or AT&T are the only viable options IMO.

Exclusivity isn't decided by quality, its decided by who wants to fork over the cash.

The derisive groan and laughter that everyone let out when they announced AT&T as the exclusive carrier should give you an idea of how much exclusivity has to do with quality, and people's thoughts on AT&T itself.

@nerdydesi1 Considering smart phones take a bevy of data (including you torrenters out there !) I doubt PSV will have unlimited data.

Strange that Verizon is not an option, since their currently the exclusive provider to the Sony Ericcson Xperia Play in the U.S (for now at least).

yea i kind of expected Verizon to be the carrier just for that very reason. *shrug* i wasn't getting 3G anyway though, it's a waste to have if you can just tether your smartphone.

Better question: should we expect the service to randomly drop and/or decide it only works in certain parts of the US?

My guess is the 3G version will be like the tablets. No contract but the price of the machine will be more than the wifi model and the data will be 250 MB for 15 and 2 gigs for 25.
