Nintendo admitted Sunday that its US-based servers were attacked several weeks ago by hackers, but that no customer data was taken. "The server contained no consumer information. The protection of our customer information is our utmost priority," Nintendo of America told Reuters.
Lulzsec, the same group that took responsibility for the recent Sony Pictures incursion, said it had hacked Nintendo but took one file and "didn't mean any harm."

I read this on a news website.
"We love Nintendo and Sega, if anything we'd hack *for* them. If you're listening Nintendo/Sega, you, you uh... you want Sony hacked more?"
Lulzsec said that our their twitter as well as
"Re: Nintendo, we just got a config file and made it clear that we didn't mean any harm. Nintendo had already fixed it anyway"
Looks like they do have a deep hatred for Sony. How exactly can't their twitter be tracked back to their location?

What they hate is authority, they are hackers after all. You try to give them structure and they'd just rebel against it. that's why it's bull when ever they say they'd work for any specific company, and proof that they'd just as well hack any other company under the right conditions.

Of course no info was taken....you have to enter it every time you buy something. and Congress should ask them why they took weeks to let is know about it....

Because shutting down Nintendo's servers for a month would affect.......like dozens of people.
"Dude, I'm putting in your friend code but it's not working!" And that's you talking on a phone because there's no online chat and playing online with the Wii is like playing with bots.

So since you have to enter it in every time you think it's never stored on Nintendo's servers? I would think they would need to keep records of the transactions even if they didn't store the data allowing you to make one click purchases.

Didn't mean any harm??? It takes just one announcement about being hacked to make a lot of people start to heavily doubt a company's security, therefore causing harm. These guys are straight-up douche nozzles.

Yep, this is bad press to Nintendo as it means their network's security was weak too.

@Frostblade10 No company is ever secure. Most companies don't publicly announce it cause they are afraid of bad press. I think it was like 90% of Fortune 500 companies have been attacked one way or another.

Wait , weeks ago? Why such a wait? I mean I know nothing was stolen or anything so they had no reason to rush out with this info but waiting that long seems...odd.

Disclaimer: I have no idea.
If I were to guess, maybe it's because they wanted to tighten up their security a bit before announcing to the world (read: hackers) that they're vulnerable enough to be hacked.

What does Congress have to do with Nintendo getting hacked? You do realize that just because something is a server, doesn't necessarily mean it has anything to do with customers (or hold their information, for that matter)

I think what people are doing is pointing out the hypocrisy of how Sony is called to the table while Nintendo is given a free pass. Plus, this was weeks ago - come on you Sony haters where is the outrage you so willingly expressed weeks ago?
Personally, I don't think anyone should be hauled before congress except maybe the hackers. If that's the case, maybe rape victims should be pulled in front of the judges and asked why they dressed so provocatively in the first place and then told that it was their fault.
Then again, based on the intelligence of the posters who were blaming Sony for everything, they would probably agree with that ludicrous statement ("victims are at fault").

This seriously reminds me of Dane Cook's whole bit about breaking into someone's house JUST for the joy of breaking into their house.
Walking around, kicking doors down just for fun.
Lulsec should start breaking into servers and putting in files that weren't previously there...
"Nothing's missing... but this photo of a lava lamp is new."

Well, this just proves it. these lulzsacs hackers are Xbox Fanboys. MUST BE.
In all seriousness though, Im glad no one got their info taken. Id rather people didnt have to go down the road sony players had to think about for the last month,
Still, weeks to release this info? Thats a little surprising. I would have released it as a way to throw another log on the "something must be done fire". Or at least showed that nintendo had a fairly strong security when it came to personal info. This should have been spun not hidden

It'd be funny if "Lulzsec" got caught by the FBI, and let Sony and Nintendo parade them around at E3 for people to throw things at.
I suppose tomatoes would be the worst allowed, but I'd be tempted to bring in some rocks.
It'd be perfect, though. "Today, we're unveiling..... those stupid morons who caused everyone so much grief. Take your frustrations out on them, people."

@oOWallaceOo I'd rather just watch Reggie walk on stage, only for multiple golden hammers to rise out of the floor. Then he'd invite people onto the stage whilst the big curtains behind him are opened, revealing these nerdy kids strapped to benches.
Actually, you know what? If this doesn't happen, E3 will be a let-down. Reggie, we want a hacker torture shot, please.

So that's how bad sony's netowrk is. NINTENDO is better protected than them.
Either that or there's nothing on their network to steal.

I don't think having poor online services which don't track anything from credit card information for future purchases, to friends, to ...well..anything of use that could be tied to a username, is a sign of a better prepared system.
Also, the hacker didn't want to cause harm.. just wanted to see if "he could do it". The people who hacked Sony WANTED to cause harm. They could just have easily hacked them without stealing information, don't ya think?
