I lost my Linux partition. I was annoyed they removed it without comensation. A month of online connectivity taken away later, I get 2 months of PS+, and 6 free games. Now I feel compensated.
Classy or not, it was too late. His humility was because he was compelled to humble. Lets hope that customers come first next time.

Definitely a bold and classy move to get that out of the way first. And it's easy to see they've made it up to their fans already. Sony gaming has a bright future, with scintillating first party exclusives and solid third party support.
Good shit Sony.

If the NGP is hacked withing a few days or months after release, the person will not live very long. I hope the NGP goes at least 3 years before being hacked (since everything can be hacked .. eventually) so its well developed and well supported.

It will be hacked in less than 6 months. 6 days if Sony comes out and claims that it's unhackable.
and it's not longer NGP so you can stop calling it that. VIVA VITAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Actually, if Sony truly intends for it to be after the latin word "vita", then it should be pronounced "PSWita", not "PSVita", as there is no V sound in latin. It's pronounced like a W. The same also applies to "veni vidi vici".

Well that wasn't an apology, that was an advert for their "great service" and nothing about how they're failure to invest in it properly failed their consumers.

The part where he didn't actually apologise for the lack of investment in security, the loss of user's unencrypted information. The Slowness in telling users and bringing services back online and the lack of investment in the new services causing them to be completely unusable for the first week they were back online.
All he apologised for was "The anxiety caused by not being able to access" PSN and related services.

@Lucky48 Not to be a anti-Sony whore (and I'll try not to be), but Microsoft and Nintendo are also corporations as well, and they too think business first, however, they are also smart enough to invest in the liability of information security.
Now, I'll give Sony the credit for the apology, it was very sincere. I could've done without it meshing into how great of a network service they are, but still sincere.
And while I'm not saying that, yeah, getting two free PSN games and such is great, don't take this situation lightly. As an IT professional, I've done some research on the incident, and it is chilling to think that a company that big would have such a weak defense in their network. The fact of how they treat their data and how secure it is, well, it's very pathetic, and for a company like Sony to treat it this way is inexcusable.
Nintendo had an attack on their network (more or less a third party company got attacked), and the hackers got nothing. And Microsoft I'm sure has had attempts on them, and as far as I know there's been no major breech of personal data (someone please prove me wrong on this). So, I'm guessing I was hoping to hear in Tretton's speech was not more apologies, but more of "we understand that security is of a greater investment, and Sony must make that their top priority." Hell, you could even have that lead into all of the wonderful services they have and are coming out with.
While their apology is fantastic and sincere, I would be fairly cautious as a Sony consumer, and for that matter.

@Neorave You can't just go onstage and say we failed and it will happen again because we don't care about our customers. The simple fact is Sony lost money and most important customers. They understand they fked up and this should not ever had happen.Sony does care about their customers i just think when their is anything good it gets overlooked and if it's bad it gets magnified. That said Sony did mess up bad ,but even still i am loyal to the Sony brand.Beyond the Playstation

Wow, I love how I get down-rated for stating fact and reading between the lines.
I've paid my dues to Sony, I have craploads of PSN content I couldn't access during the downtime, or even when it was back online!
I wasn't posting about the cheap effort of the Welcome Back package because that's another argument, I was talking purely about Jack Tretton's non-apology for what they did.
Hell, over here when our banks screwed up they said the same thing "We apologise for the anxiety caused to our customers for the global economic problems". And they got slandered for not actually apologising for the fact that THEY CAUSED IT! For me, this is the same thing with Sony.

Im surprised the lack of mention about missing KB, & dunno if it was the WORST, but it wasnt the best, I was more wow'ed @ Uncharted 2s E3 gameplay as well as Resitance 2s E3 in the past.
It was the NGP that kept me going tbh, HOWEVER, i thought i would see more heavy hitters shown, such as Killzone, COD, *secret Games Go Here*

Sony has done more in this type of situation than most companies ever would. We are outraged, but that should be targeted at the hackers.
But most companies send you an email or letter and then call it a wrap. Sony rebuilt their system, is giving out free games, and the prez himself is apologizing.
I'm grateful at the effort, and want to move on. I'll be buying a new PS2 soon enough.

For a breach of that magnitude most companies will have their president apologize. Giving out 2 free games from a selection of games that are all at least 2 years old and at most $10 apiece is not giving away free games. If I had wanted any of those 5 games I would have bought them a year or two ago. They should have given away a new game for free. A game that not everybody that wants it already owns. Seriously, If you don't already on LBP you don't want to play it. They looked at the numbers and decided that these are the best rated games that aren't selling well and offered them as choices. So they are sacrificing next to nothing.
Rebuilding the system is the absolute minimum you would expect from a company that had all l of their users information stolen.
A better idea would be to offer one free arcade game of the user's choice. 1 game that you want is better than 2 that you don't.

@Roto13 Nobody stole my identity because I make it a personal rule not to give out my personal information anywhere that I can fake it. I also don't leave my credit card info on file anywhere if I can help it. A lot of people do, though, and they should be able to.
Don't pretend it's not a big deal. Everyone knows it's a big deal, including Sony.
