Sony introduces PlayStation-branded 3D display, glasses
55
Jack Tretton revealed a new piece of hardware: A TV. And some 3D glasses. Available in one $499 bundle this fall, the 3D-enabled 24-inch television includes a pair of PlayStation-branded 3D glasses (extra glasses are available for $69.99 separately), a six foot HDMI cable and a copy of Resistance 3. Best of all, the screen includes some clever technology which allows two players looking at the display at two different angles to see separate images, effectively eschewing traditional split-screen multiplayer.

Uhhh, did you actually watch the press conference? They said, it was for dorms, bedrooms and other areas. Sheesh, if you are going to be a D*ck, the least you can do is watch the press conference instead of making comments that make you sound.... err.. d*ickish...

@Co No, but the dorm room mention is the perfect market for this. An inexpensive 3D TV with a game and a pair of 3D glasses. Plus, additional pairs aren't that expensive compared to others. It could also be good for watching 3D Blu-Rays in a bedroom or office.

Awesome. This actually sounds pretty affordable if you aren't looking for a huge tv. I can't wait for a joystiq review detailing how well the multiplayer works.

Also I wonder how much the 3D glasses will be. They said they would be "very affordable" but I don't think they said an exact price unless I just missed it.

This isn't a terrible deal, because it is likely the cheapest you can get PS3 3D, but there is one big issue here; I doubt this TV is compatible with Nvidia's 3D on the PC, rendering it useless as a PC monitor (which is what this really is, at this size) for 3D gaming. It's the same complaint I have about 120hz "3D" monitors, except in reverse. Why not make a 24" monitor that works for both?
Posted: Jun 6th 2011 8:58PM cabose369 said
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is a MONITOR, not a TV. They specifically said monitor. Big difference between a monitor and TV.

Do you mean a monitor as in a PC monitor or is there some other difference between a "Monitor" and a "TV" that I'm not aware of.
Can someone tell me if this TV will work for what I want to get it for: I am thinking of getting this to use for my PS3 obviously, my 360, for watching Blu-Ray and 3D movies and also as a PC monitor (but not for gaming - just for web surfing and word processing).
Also, anyone know if this is a mountable TV?
Thanks for any info.

can't wait till this goes on clearance!
The split-view tech is awesome, but the unfortunate truth is that extraneous hardware for consoles (such as this) just doesn't sell that well.

That "split-screen" is nifty. I found myself asking why no one else thought of it yet and then I realized the reason soon after.
Still, at 24" that's a computer monitor and the price is just so-so for a "3D" one. It's also only $150 less than what I paid for my 46" 3Dless TV.
Oranges and Tangelos perhaps but still.
Regardless, I can't play any game with a controller on a PC sized screen. So while neat and it definitely has a market, I'll pass and be happy about it.

Not a bad deal, especially since I do most of my gaming in a small bedroom. This can only help with 3DTV adoption, plus individual screens for co-op with one TV is a brilliant idea, even if you need another pair of glasses.

A surprisingly good deal. Not exactly something I'll have in the living room, but it would fit perfectly on my desk next to my computer monitor.

I love this size also, provided I have my gaming space set up to sit close to the screen (which I do).
I hate big screens too - I just find that they involve too much real estate to have to navigate, which makes FPS pretty tough to be competitive with online imo.

A 24' monitor! Jesus, thats ridiculous. You'll have to sit on someones lap to play a 2 player game on that. Im have a 27 inch tv in my bedroom and I can barely see a show at the foot of my bed when im laying down.
Im playing ps3 on a 61' inch tv now. No way in hell im going to switch to playing on that tiny ass screen.
Im sure in time it will be bigger but anyone buying that tiny tv may have to buy a table and chairs to set it up on.

You do realize the point of this product was to make an affordable 3D monitor/tv. If you are playing PS3 on a 61 inch TV, this is not meant to replace it. I think the real goal of the product is to get to those gamers not wanting to spend thousands of dollars on a new 3D TV for something many of us still think of as a gimmick.

I aboslutely love my 55" Sony Bravia 3D tv. I don't know why people constantly knock 3D.. maybe because they haven't seen it done well yet? It adds so much to games and movies.

Apparently, Sony feels the same way and this is one of their "tricks" how to get us to all check out 3D. I for one think this may be what finally gets me to try 3D gaming.... but darnit, if I do, I want full holograms in the near future too.

thats the thing it only comes with one pair, which sucks but other then that its a great starter kit for someone that never had a 3D tv/display before
the one thing I worry about is they call it a display so am thinking it might not be a tv but more of a monitor and i cause use it as a TV but i dont want to assume that the wording just worries me

You know, the PS3 offers split screen co-op but the system is packaged with one controller. If you want to play two player, you buy a second one.
This isn't any different.
Luckily, they also announced $60 glasses sold separately, so if you have the money to drop $499 on this bundle, an extra $60 isn't that big of a deal.

Hmm, this looks very tempting, and would be a great excuse for me to get one in my bedroom, but I'm not sure if that size is gonna work for me. But if it's a monitor that can also double as being used for my computer, thats a definite bonus. This'll have to be one of those things I play around with at best buy for an hour to get a good feeling for it.
