It seems like this'll be incredibly hard to hold onto for extended periods. It'd be like holding onto a netbook instead of setting it on a surface.

Although at the moment, I'm more worried that these controllers will end up being overly expensive.

Wii U controller looks to have lots more features than the 3DS. And the 3DS/basic PS Vita already cost $250. So, would the Wii U controller cost > $250?

I mean, you definitely wouldn't see this priced at $50-$60 at all.

As far as I can tell, the console itself does the work and streams info to display on the screen of the controller; so it doesn't have nearly the hardware of the 3DS or Vita in it since it doesn't do anything except take input and display already-processed info on the screen. This is all assuming that my streaming inference is right.

There is no way in hell Nintendo will sell just a controller for 250 bucks. Remember, you are buying a whole new console to use this controller with, so if the controller alone was $250, how much would the controller and console be?!

Keep in mind, the WiiPad doesn't do most of the work. It basically is in constant communication with the Wii U, which is where all of those features (minus the touch-pad and the camera) are actually running. As an example, where the DS has WiFi capabilities, the WiiPad does not, it simply communicates with the Wii U (possibly via Bluetooth) which has WiFi. Most of the expensive stuff will be in the Wii U, not in the WiiPad. That being said, the WiiPad is basically a WiiMote with a touchscreen and a camera, so take the cost of the WiiMote (about $30) and add the cost of the camera and the touchscreen (probably about $70). Then, lets assume that the Wii U system itself is comparable to the Xbox 360 in terms of its guts and would thus cost the same ($200-300). With that in mind, I'm going to wager that the Wii U will debut in a bundle with the system, one WiiPad, and something like Wii U Sports for $350. Maybe $400. I don't think they would dare make it cost any more than that. Then additional WiiPads would cost $100 each. Once again, more than that would be risky. But if Nintendo found a way to get all of this stuff cheaper than even I expect, then I think they'll probably hit another home run next year. A Wii U with a WiiPad for $250 would sell like hotcakes, but I doubt they can afford it.

Another thing that just occurred to me is if the WiiPad does communicate to the Wii U through Bluetooth (which I only assume because that was how the WiiMote communicated with the Wii) then there is a very good chance that you could pair the WiiPad with a PC as well like you can with a WiiMote. Imagine how cool that could be in the right programmer's hands.

Aye, I told my friend about the controller, and me and him are pretty much on the same page.

If there is no screenless controller released, or we can't use the Wii Classic controller Pro, we're going to say F%&^ the system, if it doesn't want to be user-friendly, we won't be Wii U friendly

@DevilSei -- You sir hit the nail right on the head. I said this exact thing. I am especially worried how fighters and shooters are going to work using this controller.

You may have awesome games, but it is essential to also have a great controller, otherwise some gaming experiences can be more frustrating than fun. (As such, Nintendo provided a Classic Controller for the Wii to play games in a more traditional style.)

@DevilSei And why exactly would Nintendo release a console that in effect is no different than the Xbox 360, but with more beef? Going backwards in terms of innovation is just plain silly. If you want stable and everlasting control hardware for games, buy a friggin PC. PC-gamers have used a mouse and keyboard on pc-games since mouse-support and user interfaces was first introduced to computers, and will probably use those same hardware peripherals till the end of time.

There is actually something called developing new ideas and innovations to keep gamers interested in the hardware and games you make. If the Wii was only a GameCube with 50% more power, it would not have sold very well, quite poorly infact. Even if the Wii was at par with the Xbox 360 power vise, the console would not have sold that well. Nintendo was seeing were the hardware race was bringing them, and in term opted out of the classical hardware iteration-game, and instead continued it's innovation in the field of interaction design.

Nintendo has done more for the innovation of console gaming than most other companies. They popularized the small gamepad with the dpad on it (NES). They made the freaking four action-button + shoulder-buttons design (SNES). They invented the small analog stick for movement control (N64), the gamepad trigger (N64) and the rumble funcionality (N64 with Starfox). Lately, they've introduced motion controls to the game (in a serious effort), and yet again, Sony is following suit, with Microsoft also going in this new direction.

Personally, I'm not one of those people who think the present gamepad (D-pad, 4-actionbuttons, 2 analog sticks, 4 shoulder buttons)-design is the only way to game for the rest of time. I actually aknowledge that gaming moves forward. Guess what, the marked is trending towards more movement and touch-based interactions. Every major console producer is on, every major mobile phone and smart phone os-producer is on. If you don't like it, I'm afraid you'll be left out cold, if it is in a matter of a few years, or a decade or two.

Shudder shudder shudder. I can imagine that controller being alright to HOLD, but I'm glad you decided to see how the buttons work out. The stick placement really worries me. It's hard enough using the d-pad on something like the 360 controller and the 3DS, but when the buttons are in the same place, I'm nervous.

This is exactly the kind of comments that popped up when the Wii was first announced. "What?! split controller?! motion gaming?! why?!" everyone was skeptical about the wii-mote (and some of that skepticism was valid) but look how many they sold! what they're at like 80 million sold!? I bet thats whats gonna happen with the Wii U. because I know that i'm gonna get one. and probably 10 people I know will get one also...

It's kind of like if Sony used the Playstation Vita as an alternate controller for the PS3. As well know by now it's not necessarily about how cool the hardware is but how its used in making games. I'm just still in shock they would make that thing the default controller for their new console. Maybe it'll catch on like the wii mote but it just looks plain weird. Don't drop the thing either ... yikes.

Biggest question is going to be the price for the system and additional controllers.

When the guy stopped playing Ruin on the vita at the conference, he went to the PS3 and used a dualshock controller. This thing would basically be like making the Vita the only controller.

Sony's already shown that was possible with remote play as well. They used to talk about streaming video to the psp while playing ps3 games, but I don't think they ever really did that.

But it sounds very possible to do everything shown on the wiiU with a ps3 and a PSP/PSV acting as a controller.

@mrantimatter While it is possible for Sony to make somthing a wee bit similar, it would not be more than an afterthought for a nice optional feature. The problem would be that almost no developers would use the functionality, seeing as how the Playstation Vita is not the default controller for Playstation 3, and not all Playstation 3 owners are going to buy Vita.

You're seeing the same thing with the Kinect and the Move titles. There are not many games that do use either Kinect or Move as their primary control peripheral. Kinect is in large part supported by kids games, and Dance Central. As of yet, no typical games utilize Kinect in a big way, which is a bit of a let down. Then again, titles are coming, and hopefully, Kinect will be supported in a much bigger way on the next Xbox. The Move is a little easier to develop for (I guess) since it is possible to use the Move-controllers as pointers for shooting games etc. I do wonder, however, if there are going to be more big games for it as well.

I think, for a controller to be properly diffused, it has to be the standard controller input for it's platform. Bringing it in as sort of an afterthought, makes it a niche-product for the spesifically interested.

IGN reported that it was really comfortable, light, and easy to hold. I'm feeling that Joystiq already had it in there minds that they weren't going to like holding the controller.

@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi You can't really put Android on the controller, as it has no real hardware onboard. The controller streams all it's content from the Wii U console. It is very unlikly you will see any real OS being installed on this thing (unless someone actually inserts some actual hardware in it, and manages to connect to the controller-board of the thing.

Hey folks - I was only checking out the E3 updates whilst at the ol' waterpark with my niece and nephew, and my reaction was that the WiiU looks godawful. Tis a shame since I was soooo pumped for this reveal. Is the presser recorded somewhere where I can watch it? Probably looks cooler in the presser.

I'm still convinced that the possibilities of the controller are incredible, I'm just bummed they modeled it after a tablet.

I mean I just wish it was somehow designed more ergonomically, they should've sacrificed some of the size of the touch pad to accomplish that in my opinion. I have no doubt the thing is going to rock, but to me it seems this is just the WiiHD with updated controllers, not truly a new console. That's fine and all, but god I could've gone for a Pikmin 3 reveal along with this...

And I think all the comments I've seen over the last few weeks about having to look down at the controller as some humongous drawback are utter absolute BS, I think that's just a ridiculous argument to make. It's a brilliant innovation in my opinion.
