I can only speak for myself, but my concerns regarding the combat don't have an impact on whether I consider the game to be an RPG or not; the preview mentions that this segment of the game is light on RPG elements. Personally, I just feel that the combat (from what we've seen) is steering slightly away from that which I have come to expect from a Mass Effect game, namely the ability to use a combination of bullets and powers rather than rely on being handed a somewhat overpowered weapon/machine, which may restrict the gameplay. After all, how many times have you replayed a forced turret section of a game and found it to be as fun as the first time? I expect to play through ME3 at least 6-7 times, and I have a nagging feeling that I'll be sick of playing certain sections the exact same way I did in previous playthroughs.

All that being said, I am looking forward to seeing what they've done with the power/weapon customisation and upgrades.

No one said better combat makes it less of an RPG. It's the removal or simplification of these character customization systems that does.

It's to the point now that saying Mass Effect 2 is "less RPG" is just childish.

It may not be the RPG you want. But it most definitely is an RPG.

No its not.

ME1 was a faux-RPG. Some stuff did not work, so bioware "improved" it(like they always do) by removing those elements.
ME2 is a cover-based third person on-the-rails shooter with multiple endings.

Now I still liked ME2 - despite a lot more bland characters when compared to ME1 and a weaker story and despite having no exploration in levels, ME2 still was a damn great game, worked great, played great, etc.

I don't expect ME3 to be more rpg-y. Bioware always makes promises they can't fulfill nowadays (DAII).

The only thing I pray for is for bioware NOT to streamline it even more and actually try to add a compelling and interesting story and likable characters (and does not make your previous characters into unlikable jerks like they did with Ashley and Liara).

One thing I hope to gods is that the whole "SAVE THE EARTH" cliche would end in like, 10 minutes of gameplay and the game would move on to real story. I have no interest in "saving the earth" through entire game. ME franchise is not about that for me. Its about discovery and grandeur, alien races and horrible things.

Can this game fail ?
Haven't finished ME2, but I'm guessing will be worth it to transfer your char from ME2 to 3.
