Nintendo press conference wrapup: You, we and Wii U
101
Many predictions were issued concerning the moniker of Nintendo's new home console -- we were personally pulling for Project Cafe, indicating the device would possess cappuccino capabilities -- but none managed to nail down the system's real name: The Wii U. Unfortunately not many other details were announced, as evidenced by our Bingo card above. Check out all the stories that came from the conference below, and sound off in the comments!

i think it kind of shows how out of left field the Nintendo presser was. not a good or bad thing but really nothing went as expected except for the Wii U controller having a touchscreen, which leaked a week or two ago.

Agreed. Time to mark that "X" over Reggie's face (on the bingo card, that is... yeah, that's what I meant...) ;-)

Miyamoto getting excited during orchestral performance is GIF worthy. That has to count.
A Mario game was announced for the new console, so that has to count as Mario Cafe.
Either way, definitely a lot of expected things didn't appear.
Pikmin 3 being the most surprising absentee.

i mean Super Smash Bros 3DS?? Yeah after the general pattern of not coming out on handhelds. Something that nobody placed bets on.

On the new Nintendo E3 website there is an image for Layton 4, so it wasn't shown here but hopefully will be somewhere on E3 floor (as already out in Japan, probably not announcement worthy considering also a Layton 5 for 3DS and Layton vs Ace Attorney).

Surely Mario Cafe should be crossed out? They announced a Mario game for Wii U.
Am I the only one that thought the press conference was good? They might not have given us precise details on Wii U (price, release date), but I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect that this early. The controller looked quite clever and certainly follows the Wii development path, and Nintendo seemed to have made a big effort to engage 3rd party developers. For me, Nintendo had the best announcements (definitely better than Microsoft - just Kinect), as pretty much everything about PS Vita had been leaked beforehand.

@DekuTree Yeah definitely. The 3DS looks like it has some excellent games on the way. I'd have liked more info on release dates, but it looks like Ocarina of Time and the eShop will keep us busy until September and then some of the big titles will start coming out.

I hear you.. the inclusion of "Wii" in the title doesn't tell me they care about bettering the gaming experience for the core audience. It'll all come down to software, which there is nothing really "new" announced for it yet (just ports), so we'll see...
At the very least, typographically, that logo looks horrific.

"Nintendo refuses to play ball."
So what? They should provide the same exact experience as a ps3 or 360? If that's the case, then Nintendo should just stop making hardware and only make software.

Oh yeah because their 'worst' console is also their bestselling one in like a bazillion years?
If you think Nintendo were going to go 'we screwed up with Wii'... well that's practically the most crazy batshit insane idea I've heard all week. Clearly you don't own any Nintendo stock.
That kind of decision would be on par with Sony announcing that PlayStation 4 is designed for use solely in old people's homes, will run on a single-core ARM processor, display on a built in 320x200 black and white screen, and only play variants of whist.
If you think Nintendo are going to make a system which won't appeal to people of all ages (kids, adults who only play party games when they have friends round, etc) but will only be designed for 'hardcore gamers' who can't stand the sight of anything cute... well, yeah, good luck with that. You know, there's other people addressing that market (primarily) and they're called Microsoft and Sony - what would be the point if Nintendo did the exact same thing?

I thought Nintendo's conference was ok. The Wii U seems interesting but didnt seem to have that wow factor that the Wii had. Some solid games were announced but more for casual gamers than hardcore gamers ( but that's probably not who's going to drive sales for this new system). I really felt like microsoft had the best one with Nintendo 2nd. Sony in my opinion was a big fail. Most of their talk was about how much they want to shove 3D down our throats and their new handheld. What about the ps3? Past uncharted, resistance I thought it was boring. Especially Kobe standing there pointing the move remote at the tv like it was a power point presentation instead of a video game!

You've gots to be kidding me. All MS showed at their conference, was that there is no reason to own a 360 aside from Kinect.....They should've announced a new console.

Just goes to show how differing peoples opinions are in regards to the conferences. I thought Sony knocked it out of the park with all the PSV functionality, price, release window, games and over all capability. Also, getting a huge leap forward in same screen multiplayer gaming with their playstation branded tv that is able to have two people play on the same screen without splitting it, being 3D and super affordable. I also liked the announcement of new HD collections from the PS2 & PSP remastered collections, new sly cooper and the demos of Uncharted 3 & Resistance 3. Sony really seems to be pushing PS Move and including functionality into existing experiences as well as a new games is a huge step forward. Playstation Suite also cool as now you can play Playstation content on your non Sony cell phone. If it weren't for PSV the conference would have just been OK but PSV pushed it into best in show.
MS was really bad IMO. It was just about Kinect games, entertainment services and shoe horning kinect into core games like mass effect. I also didn't like them dilluting a core brand like Fable by creating an on rails, shallow kinect shooter. I thought for sure it was going to be the worst of all ... until I saw Nintendo today. In hindsight, MS actually was leaps and bounds better than Nintendo.
Nintendo hardly announced anything worthwhile. Then, they spent half of their presser on the new WiiU controller. No specs, prices or release window really made for a presentation that felt empty.
Playstation Vita (PSV) stole the entire show AFAIC. They gave us price (good prices at that!), games, features, specs and a release window in the very near future.

I almost forgot.... The whole playstation tv thing....really....ur excited about that? ThAt whole " look no split screen" would have been great 5 years ago when most people didn't play online. And the price? How about they make a suitable size tv for a normal living room and not over price it instead of making a 24" computer monitor with a few extras and charging u $500 for it.

I felt sony knocked it out the park as well, the vita is the only thing out of these conferences that i can see spending my money on. MSoft was horrible though and they left out announcements that wouldve made their presentation a whole lot better (cloud saving for example).
Nintendo was great but they were too vague with the WiiU that left everyone confused. If u took the WiiU out of their presentation youre only left with the 3DS games (some that were great but we knew about already).

Other than kinect ( which i thought was pretty cool and console specific) how about, gears of war 3, new halo trilogy, some cool xbox live arcade games, streaming television, UFC on demand. And with kinect u get games not on other consoles like dance central and kinect sports! And really r u telling me that u wouldn't rather just tell ur battle comrades where to go and what to do in mass effect by just saying it?!

I'd say the 3rd party devs will end up being the winner of this E3.
Nintendo gets some props for embarking on a new console, but it's much too early for them to share too much about it. Very nice to see more mature games coming to the system.
Microsoft had to leverage the success + lack of software for Kinect, and they did take steps to make the Xbox more of a central piece of entertainment hardware, rather than just a game machine. Adding TV and Bing goes to show that. Gears, Halo, MW3, Forza are nods to the hardcore, but the lack of a new exclusive franchise is disappointing. They are clearly relying on multiplatform 3rd party titles.
Sony had a great opportunity. For many of the hardcore, MS underwhelmed due to the focus on Kinect. With the recently bad press of the PS3 I was expecting them to bring the house down. PSV is great for many, but I'm not a handheld gamer. The exclusives looked great, as expected. Drake and Resistance are awesome flagship franchises. Honestly, Shadow of the Colossus and ICO are what I'm most looking forward to from them.
I think 3rd party developers have been impressing with their software for all of the above and they'll probably be more impressive than any of the big 3 this year. I'm a little disappointed overall by the big 3, but my expectations for E3 was probably unrealistic.
