Im calming down now. I'm just gonna chalk it up as a really really bad announcement on NIntendos part. but the system seems cool. I can get over the contoller button placements. Just give us specs! =)

@Yisrael I've been confused by this question. Isn't the controller itself the "console"? It sure seems like it.

@Softserve It's not, the console is that...360-Wii hybrid in the pic. The controller can just do some cool stuff.

@Softserve Oh I guess not, there's some sort of device shown in another Joystiq post. I haven no clue why they'd not show that more either.

That thing in the picture could be just a prototype, perhaps they haven't decided on the final look yet.

@Yisrael

This is the opposite order they used to announce the Wii.

joystiq.com/2005/05/17/engadget-amp-joystiqs-live-coverage-of-nintendos-revolution/

The announced the Nintendo Revolution one year, and the controller the next.

@Yisrael Yeah me too. I didn't understand that this was a controller for the NEW console. They didn't mention it. So many questions unanswered goddamit. I love the idea though I'm afraid the new controller price will be hard to swallow.

Either a prototype, or still a lot of details needing to be finalized to talk about it probably.

Nintendo: "Let's test the waters. Repaint one of those ACER tablets with a Playskool 'Wii-white' colour scheme... throw on some psuedo-360 game demos, and see if they jump on it. We'll figure out a game casing and wacky console name for it later."

Months later, oodles of money was obtained from the soccer mom and Nintendo rabid masses; stupefying both R&D and PR departments of Sony and Microsoft.

They did! It was in every slide. The focus, and rightly so, was on the controller. Console might not be final design either.

How does it get the video on screen? Streams to Wii which sends it through cables?

It has an actual console that plugs into a TV (via HDMI). The console can transmit video to the controller's screen wirelessly, but the CONTROLLER IS NOT THE CONSOLE.

Like with the Wii, the Wii U's center of attention isn't with the control itself, but the controller. But in any screenshot with a TV, the Wii U console is sitting right next to it.

It's nice to see a Nintendo console in HD finally. That short piece of Zelda looked phenomenal. It better get a new Metroid too.

I'm a bit scared of the price, but I have to imagine Nintendo wouldn't have bothered if it was THAT prohibitive.

I'm kind of unclear on how it hooks up to the TV though. Maybe I missed that... is there some sort of receiver that plugs into the TV?

@Softserve Yeah, there is based on that shot Joystiq has. I guess it must just be wireless connectivity between that device and the WiiU. Interesting.

I know they based the 3DS's price on the reactions of the people playing it. So maybe if everybody at E3 pretends they hate it then it will be really cheap!

I'm very interested to finally see some current-gen shooters coming to a Nintendo platform. I'm overall happy with what has been shown so far. I guess Nintendo learned not to alienate one group of players over the other finally.

Am I the only one that finds it wierd that the current gen shooters and third party games that they are showing for WiiU are games coming out this year (i.e. arkham city, AC:R, Battlefield 3, and MW3 ) and the system won't be out tell next year? Sorry but I'll have all these games for other systems by then

With what? A bunch of multiplatform ports and a sure to be expensive controller? where are the console specs? Original games?

It's all vague promises right now, with no substance. We saw how the wii did after that. I'm not falling for the same trick twice.

Wow, I did not expect such hate, Regardless, here's what we know about it.

The controller has touchscreen, so it can act like the DS lower screen did for a lot of games.

They showed videos of games where the HUD was entirely in the controller (I'm assuming this will be optional) so you are now one step close to actually playing a movie.

Not only did they show heavy interaction of stuff on the controller with stuff on the console but they even showed that the controller itself can be used as a mobile screen so as to actually play a console on the go. Yes, there will probably be range issues and such but not having to fight with someone else to use the TV and the console at the same time?

The fact that this also means they are able to offer a second viewpoint on a lot of games and such is also fantastic. The multiplayer posibilities alone are endless.

They also said that it is entirely backwards compatible for all games, devices and accessories from the Wii, so you can just use one of those controllers where the new one isn't needed.

@ironneko - Sony won E3, in terms of press conferences (Or EA. Their Battlefield 3 Demo was stunning). Nintendo may have doomed themselves, if this line is true "Not quite as high quality as the other HD consoles"

In another year or so, the next Xbox will be upon us, with next gen graphics. Perhaps a year later, the next Playstation will come, and there will be Nintendo, with their just-barely-HD console, losing the hardcore. If they can't keep the casuals, I fear for them.

@bloodlinejake Welcome to the club :) seems we're all confused. What they did - was announce a new controller, with a built in screen, that isn't portable and it's not the new console itself. Because it receives images via WiFi (or something) from the actual new console - which they didn't say ANYTHING about. They want us confused obviously - and by Nintendo logic - that works well on us sheeple.

Nintendo explained their new console really badly. They focused so much on the controller, and barely mentioned the actual console itself. They didn't even show a decent picture, so it seems to have confused the hell out of a lot of people judging by a lot of the stupid comments I'm seeing on the side of the live feed.

As for the name; what the hell? My friends and I all groaned in unison when we heard it. I picture that woman from Kung-Pow. Weeoo weeoo wee.
