"There's no antialiasing to speak off" I'm sorry, but you are making the mistake that every reviewer makes. They not only base the game on graphics which they shouldn't, but then they incorrectly state that problems that are related to the platform played on. Or some reviewers assume that since it's based on a 1996 game, it must have old graphics. I'm sorry if you are maybe seeing some things not quite right, but there are usually logical explanations. I must admit that maybe the xbox version isn't the best, but I've had my experience on the pc. I've noticed that people dwell on things so much they practically convince themselves it sucks. If you are seeing aliasing, it's a sign you are playing on an outdated monitor, or some strange TV. ON the PC version, DNF can play in HD resolutions, and even do 3d stereo at fast frame rates. You also won't notice aliasing at this screen sizes. Many gamers turn of AA with larger monitors. That said, DNF HAS FULL Anti-aliasing. At least on the PC. I see no jaggies! Also every reviewer seems to have a different complaint, proving to me once and for all there is no consistency what so ever in these reviews other than the I-Wanted-To-Like-It-But-Couldn't' mantra. People hear it supposedly has bad graphics, and then make up things. Instead of focusing or cherry picking out the worst things, look around at what is great. Like for example the monsters have thousands of polygons and complex movements. They are far more detailed than many modern games out there, cod included! Some of the character models are better than any game out there. And then, yes, it's true, some are not the best. I used to work for 3d realms, Electronic arts and Interplay. I know a lot about graphics. Is the game the best, or top notch in graphics? No, but it's engine is what is used in many titles that have come out between 2009 and 2011. In other words, there's nothing really wrong with them. But people love to look for problems. Start a discussion in any room of people about why the graphics look horrible, and people begin to imagine things and help you find things. Start another discussion about what makes the game so fun, and they will do that too. You can lead people in any direction, and so can the journalists apparently. Thankfully there are some people that can think for themselves and are going to have a lot of fun with this title. As for saying it shows it's age and that it was conceived 10 years ago, I think it's your imagination playing with you. There is very little if anything about the game's humor that is a decade old. If the original title NEVER EVER existed, you could bring this game out TODAY and all people, including the call of duty fans who are usually younger, would think Duke was the coolest and funniest thing every. Because his humor is so suave? No, because he's not to be taken seriously! He's like a big, parody or joke! Yes, the same idiots that slam it today, would embrace this game. And then in 10-15 years later when they have children, those children would make fun of it. Unless however it was brought out as a new game in 2025. Then they'd think Duke was new. Do you get it? Take GTA that featured the 70's as part of one of their themes. Now that was dependent on the 1970's era for it's clothing and humor. Duke is not based in any time in particular. If it was mentioned somewhere a long time ago, then people have forgotten.. -- Of course someone can always find a way to disagree, but again, it's not like they made Duke definitely a 90's thing. The game just came from the 90's, so some think that's what that means. Never mind. Hard to explain I guess. Another big problem is that MOST people think if the title was conceived over 10 years ago it better the heck be 10 times as good or else! BULL! It's just the Duke Nukem sequel and it's plenty good enough. Not 10 times better, but just fine. It also kills me when I hear someone explain that the game was rushed to market after it was delayed 14 years! Please, think about what you are saying. Please? Also Gearbox had it for over 2 years which is plenty of time to do an entirely new game!!! So in no way was this rushed as you say. That's so silly it takes my breath away. If they sell enough copies, they will probably make a DNF2 with more improvements. But at the rate this is going, if this continues to get super terrible reviews by overly picky nit pickers, there may be no Duke Nukem Forever 2. Gearbox will simply drop the title forever and do some different game. And the reason I don't want that to happen is because an endless stream of Call of Duty clones is boring me to tears. Also DNF is better than many shoot-everything-you-see games. It's paced to offer different activities. But oh well, I guess this game is doomed to get bad reviews. Can't help that sadly.

I second this dude.

Firstly, I think 2 out of 5 is quite harsh.

You couldn't solve some puzzles or not know where to go next? Did you have to think for yourself did you?

From reading your review it seems you only played the first levels. Did you get out of the casino?

Look it's an average game, a 3, possible a 3.5 for nostalgia's sake. I agree, Bulletstorm is much better, but Duke is still an alright game. I really don't think the reviewer "got it".

I'm still reeling from the humor in Bulletstorm being called mature. Gray makes jokes that a 14-year-old would consider classy.

Ok, I don't like this review. However, I totally understand that Joystiq has to review this game like it's 2011. That's fine. But all you guys complaining about the game being outdated need to understand that this is a Duke Nukem that was started in 1997 with Duke Nukem 3D in mind.

Duke Nukem Forever Nostalgia Moment:

I'll never forget eagerly anticipating this game and being uneasy at reading the PC Gamer headline "DUKE DUMPS QUAKE" referring to 3D Realm's scapping the Quake III (!) engine in favor for Unreal's. The first Unreal.

I was 15.

Did I just read this? "games like Bulletstorm have managed to blend humor with first-person action in innovative and mature ways." "Mature" is the last word I would ever use to describe Bulletstorm. Are you sure you actually played Bulletstorm? As for DNF, its a 14 year old game and should probably be reviewed more like a retro game, in my opinion. It's like back when Mega Man 9 came out and I remember reading someone commenting that SW The Force Unleashed had way better graphics (*Gasp* Really?). I guess some people just have way too high an expectation for DNF.

I've been playing video games since Tel-star and Atari ... I played and enjoyed all the original fps games and enjoyed them all. I'm not a Techie Gamer, I'm just a beer drinkin biker, who enjoys shootin the shit out of what ever moves ... as long as the Duke remains as he was, with a tad better graphics, it's money well spent !
I'll hoist a brew to the Duke, you can keep wishing for bubblegum.

I'd just like to point out what this game is. This game literally was lying around and Duke Nukem Fans wanted to see it finished so Gearbox picked it up. They picked up this very old unfinished game and completed it and put some polish. This is an old game that was requested to be finished. This is not necessarily a 2011 Duke Nukem title. This is a 2000-ish Duke Nukem sequel. It was put on modern gaming engine Unreal Engine so it wouldn't make our eyes bleed with sprites and other ancient graphics. I played the demo and thought it was cool, I did not like the laggy aiming and such but you can get by. I liked the Humor just like I enjoyed Duke NUkem 3D. However I want some modern feel and graphics and DNF I'm sure will give it to me.

I've been playing the game since the midnight release last night and I'll agree it is not for everyone. But I will also say the reviews have all been unfair.

1. This game has not been in development for fourteen years. At least not consistently. It has been in developmental hell and just recently picked up and finished in roughly two years.

2. This game is not for the industry. It is for the fans. Scream fanboyism all you want but that is what sells a game, especially of this type.

3. It is a "true" throwback. Bulletstorm takes some old school ideas and wraps them up in a today style game. DNF isn't trying to be "today" it is trying to be classic. Yes, I agree the shields and the two weapon system ala Halo isn't what this game needed and impedes on its style, but it isn't enough to make the game bad.

In no way am I saying this game is amazing. It isn't. But i'm enjoying the hell out of it. I'm a gamer who can still whip out my n64 and have some great fun with it and this game does a good job of bringing back those old school feelings and updating it just enough to maintain that feel for today's standards of gameplay.

Younger gamers who haven't experienced or enjoyed old school shooters like DN3D or Doom etc will likely hate this game and I fear that some critics feel the need to give it a bad review mostly because of this reason. They wouldn't want to give it any praise when the majority of today's video game consumers won't feel the same way. Never the less, this game is for a certain group of people, a large one in fact, that want to relive a bit of the old days when you didn't need a blockbuster style plot, or cutting edge technology, all you needed was a shotgun and some shells to pump into some aliens!

This crappy game isn't able to kill the real, ass- kicking, neck- shitting, shake it baby, hail to the king duke that will be always remembered and loved by me.

Thanks, peace out!

Haven't tried the demo and not sure when I'll get around to getting the game. I can't say too much about the review regarding gameplay one way or another.
But I question the reviewer on the games "attitude". How is the humor any different from shows like Family Guy or Aqua Teen Hunger Force? Popular shows. Not so much with Randy's review, but with some other ones I've read around the web, people have gotten preachy about what is over the line in humor. I guess if you are of the mindset like people like Bill Maher, you can make those determinations. Fart jokes, gay jokes, racial jokes(except for jokes about pollocks) are bad, but jokes about religion, rural living, someone who governed the state of Alaska or people that cherish values from days gone by are ok. Shouldn't everything be taboo by the standards of the possibility that some one might and probably is offended by something? Or are we truly destined to be hypocrites?

I pre-ordered this game KNOWING it was going to be cheesy. I was looking foward to it. DNF is like watching the Remastered Original Star Trek...it looks great but still has same cheesy acting and physics. DNF is like a 71 Corvette it is greatness, but you wouldn't want to drive it to work everyday. I played it a few hours last night and was not dissapointed at all. It is CLASIC Duke Nukem, just like I remembered and loved. Sure the combat is simplistic, sure the jokes are childish, but that IS Duke Nukem. I wouldn't have baught is if were Bullit Storm, or Call of Duty. The only "sad" thing about Pre-Ordering...I was only one who pre-ordered the PC version at my local GameStop.

DNF is bad. Yes. Its playable, and fun, but bad. Kudos to Gearbox for taking what was probably a mishmash of half finished levels and code, and turning it into a game that's actually playable. They did their best. The only really awesome thing I see coming out of this is the fact that now that Gearbox has the Duke IP, The next Duke game (and by hell, there will be one!) Will be pure Gearbox magic. Duke Nukem Forever is the contracturally obligated ending of a long, long idea that ultimately failed. The next Duke game will be what we've truly been waiting for all these years.

Summed up reviews: "MY EXPECTATIONS WERE SO HIGH AND I HAET THIS GAME!"

It's really a middle of the road title, like a lot of other releases these days. I'm really enjoying it, and, it is what it is.

As for the clumsy mechanics people want to bring up... yeah, Borderlands, another middle-of-the-road game has the same gameplay just about.

Haters gon' hate, and I'll go have myself a good time.;)

I rented the game from Redbox last night, spent a few hours with it so far and I'm actually kinda getting a kick out of it. It's not great by any means, but all the negative press really set my expectations low, and it's managed to surpass them. It's got a lot of problems (load times are atrocious, most of the humor is either outdated or skin-crawling, etc.), and it shouldn't have been sold at $60, but there's still some fun to be had. I'll probably hold onto it long enough to beat it, and maybe I'll even buy a copy when I can get it for $20 or less.

We didn't want a new Duke Nukem game because it would have an in depth story line with a sophisticated sense of humor or ground breaking gameplay. We wanted Duke Nukem because it was Duke Nukem. Who cares if " by today's standards it simply doesn't hold up. " it's not supposed too.

Overall, I've been kind of disappointed by the game as well, but I don't think I'd give it a 2 of 5 rating. It gets at least a 3 of 5 from me. I was a huge fan on DN3D back in the day. Two things really bother me about this sequel. For all their effort, the game has a really slow start. I was hoping, like the first, I'd be blowing away alien scum right and left right away, but not so. Trying to solve puzzles with an RC truck? That's not what I had in mind when I purchased this game. The other thing that really gets to me is that the whole game has a very Unreal feel to it. Understandably, that is because it's using the Unreal engine. However, because of this, it really rubs me the wrong way that I can't double jump or hold more than two weapons at once.

In my opinion, Capture the Babe, is the only redeeming quality of this game. It's a hilarious spin on capture the flag. I love listening to the girls endless teases and flirts, my favorite, "He touched my butt!" lol

In regards to the game being slow and jumpy, I have had no such problems, and I have the graphics effects turned up all the way. And, there are a lot of shadowing effects, and they work great. It's time to upgrade your system.

The problem with these reviewers is that they didn't digest the game before playing it. They had these impossible-to-meet expectations, and they played the game expecting it to make them cream in their pants, and when it didn't, they wrote a review nitpicking all the things they think it didn't do right. My nickname is "nitpick" and believe me, I'm the kind of person that nitpicks the tiniest details. One of the things I love about DNF is the detail in the level design. Go look at the Duke Burger level and notice the small things. It's a classic level.

Probably none of these reviewers even got to level 5 in the multiplayer. I'm currently level 29, and I've had more fun with this game than any game I've played since Diablo 2. I played the Bulletstorm demo, and you can't even freaking jump in the game. When you run, the screen shakes violently like you're in an earthquake. The game just feels terrible. Duke Forever gets the feel right, and that's the most important thing. The two weapon limit is liberating. Multiplayer matches are no longer about collecting weapons, they're about finding one or two good weapons and then using them strategically in the parts of the level where those weapons are easy to use.

My take is that this game is easily worth $49.99. It was certainly worth half that during the Steam sale. Also, people: don't play this game on a console. It's a PC game. If you don't know how to control a FPS with a keyboard and mouse, it's time to learn. You won't regret it. You'll be playing these games for your entire life and you'll get so much more enjoyment out of them. You can also play new user-made ports of games like Doom, Quake and Duke 3D, which take those games to new levels. Those won't be available on consoles.

Ok, so here's my take. This playful, albeit dated romp through nostalgia-land was extremely painful at times, as well as extremely frustrating, as well as extremely fun. Though the latter moments are few and far between, this game is still at least worth renting to those of us who spent countless hours blasting pigcops a decade and a half ago.

It just seems a little like a decade and a half ago is when it should have been made. But I'm convinced that's what they were going for. Though its not that great of a game, by todays standards, I feel like this game is a perfect sequel. It perfectly embodys the tongue in cheek humor and lewdness of its predecessor. It feels like the same game, from the same time. If you really enjoyed duke nukem 3d as an adolescent, id say play it and decide for yourself.

The achievements are super easy, and most of the game is fairly easy to any competent player, though there are moments where shit hits the proverbial fan and you are overwhelmed by flying brains and pigcops charging relentlessly.

My only complaint is that on xbox 360 there is about two minutes of laoadtime everytime you die. And sometimes that happens quiter frequently in certain areas of the game. Two minutes of waiting for a game to load seems like an eternity, especially when you die as soon as you reload the checkpoint and wait again, then die again two seconds later.

Just because of the sole fact that duke 3d is part of my heritage, so ingrained into my mind from my adolescent years, I have to like this game, and not only that, I have to give it 6/10. Definitely try it for yourself.
