You saw the logo unceremoniously flashed on the screen at Nintendo's E3 presentation; now see the trailer and screens. The Miis have cleaned up after their tame soiree, handing the keys to the venue back to Mario and pals, who are throwing Mario Party 9 on the Wii.
We were going to joke about Mario being a serial partier, but we realized that just twelve get-togethers (counting the GBA, DS, and e-Reader outings) since 1998 is actually not that much social interaction.
Some people may not like it, but I was always a fan of Mario Party.
I was disappointed that Mario Party 8 didn't really seem to take advantage of the Wii Remote, (which is maddening--Nintendo's own mini-game fest series only made one dismal appearance on Wii?) so perhaps this will redeem it.
@Gooblechev I liked the ones on the 64, but after 3 the quality steadily went downhill... culminating in the crapfest that was Mario Party 8. Hopefully this one will be more fun.
@XRZ36 yeah that's why Nintendo went and gave the Party series a break so hopefully this one is a lot more fun and I plan to pick it up since I skipped on 8.
I for one am actually grateful there is no video. Even though thats the video "hint" for a youtube embedded video after the break. I've been scarred waaaaaaay too much by adverts telling me how to protect my imaginary kids on the internet just before the aforementioned video goodness on Joystiq posts.
Yeah, and hopefully there's a mode where it's not so random who wins and loses. The last one seemed like you got stars for no reason: "You got some coins! STAR! You DIDN'T get some coins. STAR!"
I hope this one goes back to the style of Mario Party 1-4. After 4 the series started going down hill with the removal of Donkey Kong and the item shop(replacing it with the stupid orb things was just an awful idea)
I'd love to see Mario Party 4 remade. It's so awesome.
It appears that when a person rolls, the car moves and and everyone goes with it, which I think it's a terrible idea. I just hope it is one map and not all of them.
I found Mario Party 6 to be the best of Gamecube games. The day and night cycles, the best minigames, great music. All around great game. Then Mario Party 7 & 8 came and ruined everything.
Online, would be sweet for me. I could definitely rally 2 - 3 people that way. Probably not too useful overall though, since playing with random people likely just wouldn't work at all.
Mario Party 8 was the first Mario Party I got believe it or not, despite owning a GameCube. I didn't think much of it, I know it's basically more of the same but I expected it to be better considering it was a fresh game for me. I had hoped the Mario Party 9 logo was for a Wii U game, because Mario Party with a touch screen worked a treat on DS. Maybe if this uses MotionPlus it will be worth my time, but I'll hold it off my wanted list until the reviews come in this time.
Something I was shown recently: 1. Take your favorite Mario Part from 1-6 (although I doubt 7 or 8 is your favorite) 2. Set it up with 4 CPU players on the easiest difficulty level 3. Liquor up, place bets.
The newest issue of game informer (darksiders 2 cover) has an article about EA reverse engineering the Genesis so they could make & publish their games. It was fascinating to hear about the console climate with Nintendo controlling 98% of the market and putting the kibosh on 3rd party games. Basically, they sold dev kits at a huge amount (not specified), required total control of production of cartridges (that you were forced to repay later), release dates and could decide to remove a game or not sell it after they produced the cartridges! I never knew the whole story about Nintendo & 3rd parties ... Just that it was strained. Anyway, it was cool to hear that EA threatened Sega with thier own genesis dev kit because they wanted to control product like nintendo.
I once played a game of Mario Party with 2 friends and a 4th player that was controlled by nobody. All we would do was role the dice when their turn came up.
There is so much randomness to Mario Party games that the uncontrolled player ended up winning.
I play all of the newer ones because I can't let go of how much fun the older ones were.
The newer ones never really hold my attention like the older ones, probably because the concept has been done and reused so many times. I'm hoping this new one can through something completely new in there (but the cart thing is kind of strange)...
As long as there is nintendo there is going to be a mario party game on whatever system is released. This series was created with one thing in mind... get people to do things with their controller that the controller was never meant to do so they have to buy them more often!
I was worried the franchise died with 8 after Wii Party was announced (and after 8 was such a debacle). The minigames are always good, but the maps always get overcomplicated in the recent games.
Using the car seems like a goodway to shakeup the game while simplifying it at the same time. I'm all for it.
The party is back and bigger than ever in the Mario Party 9 game for Wii, featuring all-new ways to play! For the first time in the franchise, boss battles crash the party and challenge players to compete to defeat a common enemy. In addition, players now travel across stages together in a vehicle towards a common goal - overcoming obstacles, battling bosses, and collecting Mini Stars stolen by Bowser and his minions. Featuring 80 new minigames, adventurous new stages, and all-new ways to play that blend cooperative and competitive action for up to four players*, Mario Party 9 is the perfect way to get the party started.
