You mean when there are more games out that will give us a compelling reason to lay down the money?

There is something seriously wrong with the Joystiq mobile app and how it deals with replies. My comment was meant for (unverified) above.

and on the upside it was released nowhere near the EOY holidays. Assuming they get all the games they mentioned in E3 out, and assuming they release holiday bundles/deals things will definitely pick up. The biggest thing they have going against them now are the supposed 'core' crowd that have proved to be extremely resistive to 'change.' It's a strange market where the supposed biggest customers cry out for change, yet buy more of the same, and slam innovation with superfluous observations.

Their problem is they're competing with themselves. There are still plenty of DS games being released that you don't need a 3DS to play. As development shifts to the new handheld and the 3DS games take over, the value proposition will improve substantially.

Two forms of attack:

1.) Price cut
or
2.) Release great games

Nintendo, make it so.

I know they wanted to come out before the Vita, but if they really wanted this thing to take off, why didn't they wait until their AAA titles like Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario etc were completed before releasing this thing? There's nothing out for it. There was a used black 3DS (shocking I know) at Gamestop the other day. I thought about picking it up since it was 225, but there wasn't anything I wanted on the 3DS wall. The Vita seems to have at least Uncharted, Wipeout, LBP and Mod Nation Racers set for launch. Was the early release worth making customers wait for good games and having them being bored with their handheld in the meantime?

@Shockwave

Well, generally handhelds don't host AAA titles. They're better for quirky games (see DS library). The games are cheaper, and high production values don't matter much on a 4-5 inch screen. The 3DS launched with a pretty good range of titles across different genres. A new Mario or Zelda would have been nice at launch, but a lot that stuff is launching before the holidays anyway, so what's the difference? A few months?

Releasing it early allows them to establish relevancy before the holidays hit.

@Shockwave because it's silly to make the games ready before they know how popular the system gets.

I mean that I'll wait for the system to have original games to buy it. Meanwhile, I'll play games that aren't rehashes on other systems. And if the 3DS never gets enough original games, I will skip it, not big loss.

Price cut to $199 or less and I'll buy it.
As it stands, the system is $50 too much.

Also the software line up sucks, even looking ahead.

Mario Kart, Mario 3DS and Luigi's Mansion are the only games that look remotely interesting to me.

Other then that there's Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing (if you like playing a decade old game that never changes) and a still overpriced eShop.

So much for third party support.

Oh these negative nancys amuse me....

All the previous models of DS hovered near 200 dollars when first released,.(I know, I have had every model, and went through 2 DS lites) 50 dollars more for a more powerful version with better 3D isn't much more to ask.

The launch titles may have been less then ideal, at least from a NIntendo release standpoint. I maintain that SSF4 3D is better then the newly released Arcade Edition DLC. Steel Diver is not the greatest game ever, but worth playing with just because of the unique controls and concept. Also DOA and Blazblue were just released as well, I don't know as much about DOA but Blazblue is a faithful and amusing port of the others. If you like Blazblue at all, pick it up.

It looks like the first months were for fighting game fans. Anyway I'd be surprised if this months release of OOT (often considered the greatest game of all time) and a new Resident Evil game don't pick up the sales a bit, I know I will be picking up both.

The E-shop's prices aren't high either, $5 for Mario Land? Good luck finding a copy that works as well and a Gameboy that works as well for that low price.

By years end the sales will be more then good, people acting like the ship is sinking amuse me.

Yes it is, considering the console was released earlier this year and not years ago when its technology was more expensive.

DS sales picked up when it dropped to $129 from $149, Nintendo gave another choice, and the great games came out.

@ecco6t9

Well they were pretty cautious with the DS because it was high-risk breaking with the GameBoy brand and they were taking a whole new tact trying to make it appeal to a larger demographic and be less like a toy. But with the 3DS they already know it can print money once they get a virtuous circle going again.

I guarantee there will be a price cut by the holidays, and also didn't OoT just come out there? At any rate, I know that sales here, next Sunday, will most likely be UP from OoT.

We'll see though.

Nintendo needs to keep in mind this console sells most to little kids. Parents probably don't want to spend 250 bucks on a birthday gift, they really should have made this cheaper, it probably would have sold as much if not more within those few weeks.

I honestly think the spell is almost broken, there are only so many times you can make similar games with the same ips (but with a twist) before you just can't anymore.

Mario isn't eternal and some gen (though I don't think fully this gen) soon enough Nintendo will be in deep trouble because without the pull of those core characters they are by far the least prepared technologically to move forward.

The mobile gaming sphere is growing very fast now (youtube - shadowgun) and the stand alone handheld is being threatened and Nintendo needs to begin thinking of the next thing soon like Sony already is.

@yomachaser

You don't think fully this gen? How many 20 year old franchises have had two games sell 20 million units this gen (and that's disregarding Kart, and the Galaxies and 64 DS, without even bothering to count the lesser iterations)

Between DS/Wii Karts, the Galaxies, 64DS, and the News, you're looking at a draw of 110 million units (probably more, as i rounded a bit here) this generation from the little plumber, which is more than the entire amount of first party software Sony has shifted period, and that's just a chunk of one franchise

Nintendo will endure, trust me on this

OK.

If you think 250 is too much, Nintendo doesn't care if you buy it or not. They make enough money with or without you. (I don't have 3DS yet, but do you really think Nintendo cares? NO)

I guess me writing this is already silly because one who hates don't get to say much, because all one has to do is just not buy it. Complaining about things rarely helps.

250 is fair with this thing. When you hold it, with the new gloss finish and see the major improvements over DS.. it feels so worth it.

..Then you realize you have no games to play.

You have to remember that a direct shot-for-shot comparison against the DS is unfair

Why? Christmas (well, New Year's is the big draw in Japan, but same thing), and then the DSLite and DSi saw the DS itself as a matured platform by the time they hit

Mario & friends no longer amuses me. Nintendo [desperately] needs some fresh faces for it's list of first party characters. Right now I'm pro-VITA *pleased*.
