Some of you are young gentlemen, right? Of course you are. And like any young gentleman, you're a savvy newsreader, so you likely turn to Newsweek or The Nation for political analysis. We understand, Time Magazine just isn't for you since it started catering to older readers -- that's fair. But Time wants to win you over, and it's hoping that its promo tie-in with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will help in that battle.
"This is where the boys are," Time publisher Kim Kelleher told the New York Times, adding, "This is a great way to connect with millions of people we might not have otherwise connected with." According to the piece, both Time's editors and executives agreed to allow the use of the magazine's iconic cover wrapper after realizing that the pre-order bonus would be seen by many millions of Time's most elusive demographic -- young American males.
If that justification weren't enough for your journalistic sensibilities, managing editor Richard Stengel adds that the faux use of the cover for this promotion was "a similar idea in a different medium," comparing it to the various "Person of the Year" covers for fictional characters or concepts. He also points out that the medium involved in this case -- video games -- is part of "one of the biggest entertainment franchises of all time." Now that was a necessary detail, Mr. Stengel!

As someone who played a lot of Battlefield games, I don't see the game taking over the CoD audience. I haven't been paying attention to Battlefield 3. Is it now just a CoD clone? That sucks if it is.

@FriedConsole For someone who has apparently "played a lot of Battlefield games", you don't seem to know much about the series and how it is the polar opposite of Call of Duty

@The Cole Train To be fair I think the opposite of Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty would be something like; The history of ladders, a written autobiography by an unknown writer. They are both FPS that take combat on a global scale. The differing factors between them is one is more class based on a specific scale with much more destructible environments, and the other is a cash cow. To be fair, I do love MW2, but people shouldn't become so polarized by video games.

That is why I said it won't take over the CoD audience because it is a different game.
Maybe you should read my comment again saying the words slowly out loud. Feel free to ask you parents for help.

Time has lent their magazine cover to various movies as a mock up for a certain character's "Person of the Year". This is no different and if it causes an uproar then it's probably due to another episode of anti video game bias.

Too bad the fake cover isn't terribly exciting. Should be a pic of the Statue of Liberty with her head missing or something more dramatic. Instead it's "hey that building on the right is busted and there's a bit of smoke".

The point is that the pic should be more dramatic. Why would a photographer take this picture? It's not really of anything.

@343 Guilty Fart - Don't worry; Modern Warfare 3 is going through all of the New York cliches, just like Crysis 2 did earlier this year. Nothing is going to be left out.

One thing I'd like to point out is that I'm pretty sure Time wouldn't be publishing that headline after we've already been attacked like that. Awesome promotion, though

I didn't watch any of the call of duty videos, was this in the trailers in the vein of "Iron Man stabilizes East West relations" fake covers? Or was it an actual print release with a stunt cover?

Seriously, Time was paid a shit load of Money under the table by Activision, and that's why their so polite about it, any controversy will only be good for sales on both sides.

I honestly thought that was for Crysis 2 until just now. At this point, a game would be way different if it took place in a made up middle-eastern country. Seems like everyone is making New York or some other big city the setting of their game.

With Time involved I thought they'd include a collection of 80's music or the like.

I haven't picked up a Time magazine in like a decade. Maybe next time I'm at the bookstore I'll skim through it to see if any articles catch my attention. Willing to give it a try, but if its still not for me - its still not for me.

Bah! In the UK the newspapers allow companies to make adverts that look like the real paper and then put the advert right on the front page.
With paid papers it isn't done too often - but one issue of the Daily Express confused me when the main headline was "London Thrown Into Puzzling Stare of Affairs" and the article said that Professor Layton was on the case.
The Times should do that with this. Now THAT would cause some attention.

Looks like call of duty 3 re-skinned to modern times. Oh wait it is.... The first showing of a game that comes out in a few months looks very dissapointing for a COD game. RIP IW for firing the guys that MADE this game great. BF3 actually shows some innovation.

They shouldn't even need to do this anyway. TIME has interesting articles and even separate issues for young readers.
