I'm not claiming to be the brightest bulb in the light store, but I beat the game, and I looked at this image, and I can not make much sense of it. Also, I was frustrated because I clicked "source" and then clicked the image like ten times, jumping through various places where it was linked, hoping to finally get an original size version...but alas. It stays tiny.

It looks like the original plan was for Wander to *spoilers obviously incoming. WTF are you doing here if you care about SOTC spoilers* get the horns as an adult, instead of as a newborn. That is my take, anyway. I much prefer the ending as it is, but I'm always interested in bits and pieces of concept art for Ico and SOTC.

@(Unverified) - The same way that people think Wander's name is "Wanda", and that Yorda is blind; They don't read the promotional material, like us nerds.

@BananaBoat Um...no. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with reading promotional material. He clearly says Agro in the game.

@BananaBoat Except his name is actually Wanda in the japanese release. The title of the game is "Wanda to Kyozō"

It's "wanda" because there's no rhotic in Japanese. It was a transliterated "wander". Just like "computer" is "konpyuta". Anything with an "er" is turned into "a". (and th becomes s, and 'si' is shi, and 'zi' is 'ji', etc.)

@igasagu - The limited edition set has "Wander and the Colossus" printed on it. My understanding is that Fumito Ueda always wanted it transliterated as "Wander", as in "Wanderer" and not "Wanda".

I'm not a master of the Japanese language, but basically "Wander" isn't a word that exists in Japanese. Because of this, they basically had to get as close as they could. Something approaching a transliteration to "Wanda" was the best they could do, but the intention was "Wander" in the same way that "Yoruda" was meant to be "Yorda".

Now we're all nerdier for having had this discussion.

The alternate ending seems a lot better than the original, where Wander ends up teaming up with the colossi against the evil horse.

Oh, SPOILERS if I didn't say that already.

To get technical, I think Agro is a she, a mare. I don't see no stallion........"parts"........between those legs. So Argo is Agro, and he's a she. :)

Seems right to me, the transliteration of "wonder" or "wander" would be ワンダー, if you chop the last character off you get the name on the Japanese box "Wanda".

They probably changed it because "Wanda" has a lot of connotations in English that it doesn't in Japanese (girl's name and so on)

Everyone is wrong.

It's definitely "Wanda."

Fumito Ueda has said on numerous occasions that Shadow of the Colossus was, in fact, a biographical work.

Yes, but Aeris was a bad translation during localization just like a third of the dialog in that game. She's Aerith in Kingdom Hearts, Dissdia, Compilation of FF7, and anywhere NOT the original Final Fantasy 7. So consider it an error they have since corrected.

When I played FF7 the black guy's name was Mr. T, Yuffie was LilBoy, Tifa was Chesty, and Cloud was Blondie. So next time you replay it just change her name to Aerith and then the FF7 you played won't call her Aeris.

@Extinction The Aerith/Aeris stuff has to do with pronunciation. The "th" sound isn't so common outside of the English language. On the same page, Rinoa is called Linoa in some languages, which makes sense considering Japanese basically don't make a difference between the "L" and "R" sounds.
