The update adds enhanced graphics to each level, including new block sets and backgrounds, plus 84 bonus rooms, a new final castle and over 30 different cameos. For now, we must be content with 14 minutes of footage, which we've gone and tucked just past the break.
New Super Mario Bros. 3 fan remake gets updated

Do you remember that crazy Super Mario Bros. 3 fan remake we posted about late last year? Well, creator SKJmin has finished a sizeable update to his ambitious remake, one you'll be able to download on June 16. If you plan on doing so, we'd suggest making sure you actually own New Super Mario Bros. DS -- you know, for legal reasons.

I know I'll probably get downvoted for this, but owning a copy of NSMB for DS doesn't make this legal.

I mean, if you're gonna download this, you might as well download it regardless of whether you own NSMB or not.

No, you're correct.
As old as the Internet, there's been the myth going around that if you own a physical copy of the game, it's okay if you download a ROM. Or that it's okay to download a ROM if you delete it within 24 hours. Both are completely false.
The only way it's legal for you to have a ROM or ISO of a game is if you made the backup yourself.
Like it or hate it, that's the truth.

that's true, but i guess it helps people more concerned with the morality of it than whatever the law says.

It's also not illegal. You can make a ROM from the official game cartridge, and this is just a patch for the ROM. It should fall under the fair use doctrine, but I doubt Nintendo or a consumer really wants to take it to court to find out for something like this

So Nintendo (or whoever) should just allow anyone to hack their games? People put hours into creating these games. Why should some hacker get to ruin that bars work. To me it just seems they are ungrateful, that they can't appreciate a product for what it is.

@tendoboy1984 Ungratefull? What are you an idiot? "Please take my money I be gratefull if you took it from me!" Seriously they should be gratefull you buy it. Infact both sides shouldn't be "gratefull" to anything but their own lifes and the simple pleasures it gives. It is nothing mroe then a financial transaction for which both sides pay something and get something in return. You money for a game, and they money for their game.
All this crap about this being ungratefull.... seriously...

Did the level at 2:32 remind anyone else of the tree level in "Tiny Toons Adventures" game for the NES? For a split second I thought he should switch to Furball and that stage would be much easier.

So a little confused... Hopefully someone can clear it up.. Is a download you play on your ds?

It's a ROM hack, meaning it's a patched version of NSMB. In most cases, the hacker provides only the patch to apply to a ROM, then you gotta go find the ROM yourself. You can play it on a PC with an emulator, or on an actual DS with a flash cart.

I'm never a fan of any project that mixes and matches different art styles so badly (in other words, copy+paste of SM All-Stars sprites into 3d-rendered NSMB worlds). I'm still trying to figure out why he replaced some decent, style-matching backgrounds with carbon copies of backgrounds from SMB 3 (All-Stars) and SMW, black outlines and all....

I know that it's because it uses assets from NSMB, but with "Mario" and "3" in the title, it makes me sad there's no tanooki Mario

In the description of the video, he states that Tanooki will be added in version 3 of the hack. I'm hoping this will lead to the other SMB3 powers being added. It's not impossible to add new content via ROM hack, look at things like Mario Adventure. It's a heavily modified hack of SMB3 on NES. So much has been changed, it would be easy for Nintendo to pass it off as a new Mario game.

I liked that video just for the simple fact that he used perfect dark remix of the datadyne music... flipping amazing.

Why not just play Super Mario Advance 4?
It looks better, plays better and costs all of about $6.

meh, I'll wait for version 3 if that's when the Tanooki suit is integrated.

I think the original (1.0) actually looks better, esp. if the dude is going after NSMB-like graphics. 2.0 has a 3DS-y Mario look to it, it's fatter.

Hmm, still no proper powerups... all the technology we have today and I still can't get a functional tanooki suit.

I wasn't so mad at the mod as I was Nintendo for making it so you can't fly or turn into a statue. I get cutting the running start but they could have made it so you jump into it or something similar with shorter air time. I just feel its the same type of approach that gave us generic Toad clones in NSMB Wii instead of literally anyone from the massive collection they have.

I think this is really just more proof of how much better SMB3 was than NSMB.
I really felt the level design in NSMB was lackluster.
