Were you perplexed by the odd, seemingly misspelled word that kept periodically popping up during Sony's updates about the PSN outage? You know, Qriocity? It seems Sony is attempting to take advantage of your piqued attention, as PlayStation Blog has announced that all PS3 owners ages 18 and up are eligible to receive a free 180-day membership to the streaming music service.
To access the offer, PS3 owners simply need to select the "Music Unlimited" option under the Music pane of the XMB. After that, it's just a matter of figuring out which of the seven million tracks therein you want to listen to first. No, seriously, it's an important decision. If you kick off your Qriocity career with Hoobastank, we're going to be very disappointed in you.

Six months of what?
Posted: Jun 15th 2011 3:40PM TheOtherJames said
@Bootes
It's six months of the basic service, which if I'm reading this correctly basically provides unlimited streaming of "channels" of certain types of music. You don't get to pick the songs that stream. You do get to rate the songs so it will pick songs you're more likely to like. Think Pandora or Slacker with a preset selection of options.

I'll bitch...you need to input your card information, not trusting Sony with that. On top of that, you need to cancel before it auto-renews your account, and if you cancel it the day you set it up, there goes your free 6 months.
I'd rather pay Apple $25 a year for their cloud service.

How much is the auto-renewal?
I think I'll stay away from this myself. I tend to occasionally be forgetful and I hate mystery charges showing up on my card. LoL

I hate services where you have to put in credit card and have to manually go in there to terminate the service. It's like those free magazine subscriptions...

actually, none of what you said is true...i just started my trial and it says "This product will not auto-renew." aaaand i didn't i have to put any card information in...maybe you didn't have your card information in on the psn or something? anyway, it never asked me for my card information. i pressed "X" probably 3 times and i was in the service.
i should have said most of what you said is not true...cuz you may as well be willing to pay for apple's cloud service over this.

Well when the trial first went up, it asked for my card information, and it DEFINITELY said it auto-renewed. Not sure why you'd have your card information stored with their services given all the recent hacks.
Seriously, I shouldn't even bother replying to you, I'd rather you get hit with a $10 fee for a crappy service for being negligent.

i just tried it on one of my dummy account that has no credit card info and it work without asking for any cc info. and you can disable the auto renewal by going to account management>transaction management>service list>Music Unlimited>select the 180 day free trial>and cancel the subscription and it give you a message saying that it will expire on the date listed. which for me is 12/12/2011

Perhaps they changed it after the Welcome Back package and Store was restored...but I'm almost 100% positive this was not the case a few months ago, guess I'll try it out now. Thanks.

no problem yeah i remember the last free trial where u had to have cc info and auto renewal. but now since they know so many people are worried about another psn attatck they arnt gonna make anyone put their cc info in.
but it does still auto renew so be sure to tun that off asap. the alst thing anyone want is to try this out once and have some random -10 buck in the psn wallet or something.

@mywhitenoise It would appear that you are incorrect; try being a gentleman about it, rather than being bitter. I realize youre not using your ps3 as a game player as much as a movie player these days, but those of us that love to take full advantage of all the things it has to offer don't need or require the negativity.
Its a free service, enjoy it then walk away when you are done. Simple as that.

Thanks to Joystiq, I'm naming my new dog, Hooba.
Or should I be thanking Hoobastank? No. I shouldn't thank them. Especially since I confused Maroon5 when they came out, for a "mellow -er" version of the band.
And let's face it, the vet won't be able to spell Qriocity the way SONY does.

You confused Hoobastank for a mellower version of Maroon 5?
The most obvious comparison is Incubus. Some of the members are blood related, the singer is a total follower of Brandon Boyd...hell, even the name is a 3 syllable word.

@liquidsoap89 Yeah , I been using playlist.com and they recently banned Canadians from using it.
I been a long time member for playlist.com and now they're really cracking down on us.
I removed all playlists from all my profiles because of this.
Why do I want to help earn them money if they wont fight this with us Canadians?

Same sort of thing happened with the Zune... I've had one for years, and then they changed around the marketplace stuff and it was basically removed for people that had their settings properly set to say they were in Canada (ME!). The only reason it's back now is because the WP7 came out (albeit a very stripped down version...).
Not surprising, but somehow it's still not something I get used to.

yea youtube is actually pretty awesome for music. i use it pretty often actually since it's alot better than trying to decide if i like something based on a 30sec sample or paying for something i might not like. i just search it on youtube and you can actually hold onto tracks from there with a combination of the download helper firefox extension and mediacoder for conversion. the quality isn't always great but it's certainly passable.

While I'd like to not start a console war here, I'll see your claim of the 360 being a "piece of shit" and raise you the fact that the PS3 "only does everything"...... including identity theft.
For the record, I own both consoles and enjoy them both. I'm sorry you feel the need to bash one or the other. It doesn't get you anywhere.
