now I know very well I will be stoned for saying this but I seriously can't understand how people get so excited for Mario games when LBP is now the definitive platformer. It's like how people get giddy for Mario Kart while Mod Nation is also now the definitive cart racer, there is no denying it if you actually played both.

What you said, except the opposite. I gave both LBPs a chance and I don't think Mario is going to need to be checking his rearview for Sackboy (who makes a much better mascot than a controllable character) any time soon.

Commence stoning.

LBP is great, but it's no Mario. They focus on different things.

Nah, LBP is no where near the definitive platformer. In fact, others on the PS3 ecosystem beat LBP, such as Sly Copper. LBP is a great sandbox but that's it. Ever play the game single-player? Yawn fest.

Between Galaxy, Galaxy 2 and NSMBWii, Mario has nothing to worry about from LBP and LBP2.

Completely agree. I have ModNation on both my PSP and PS3 and I can't say they're very good. They're way too generic and uninteresting for me.

LBP too. A nice game but not as original or fun as playing through Mario. The controls are way too floaty and there's hardly any precision at all. It's just a fluffy modern FPS built to cater, since it doesn't have the following of Mario, to the biggest common denominator.
The PSP one was trash. No multiplayer, slow menus, didn't work with the analogue nub.

Perhaps you should look up the acronym "FPS", and see what it actually means.

@MrAhh I honestly just think Mario has been around too long. I mean, he's really cool and I love the games, but they just keep changing too much and adding too much to it. Eventually Mario won't even be Mario. He might be Paul.

@Tihn Little Big Planet was boring?!

I thought it was great. I DO think it's better than most recent Mario games. I can understand people thinking that Mario is still the definitive platformer but saying LBP is boring is a bit much.

I thought the single player was great.

I've platinumed LBP, and would have a platinum for LBP if it weren't for that 24 hour Create trophy...but it is in no way better than Mario, you can't compare the two.

I'm tired of both of them. That said, Mario controls better and ultimately provides more interesting challenges. LBP is more like "oh, look at all the creativity here!" than fun. I really enjoyed playing through LBP when I got it, but right now, those sackpeople smiles look insidiously evil to me. Kind of like: we're so cute, buy our game! BUuuuuy eet!

Completely agree about Modnation. It's highly superior to Mario Kart in every way, from the gameplay to the customization. I'll never play another MK game again.

I completely agree with you. It is not, so called "fanboy-ism". It is just logic. Mario can run, jump and collect various items. New features are added with every occasional instalment, but the entire series does not come close to what Media Molecule has managed in 2 games. LBP has completely redefined the entire platforming and level creating genre.

@A Sandwich Although they focus on different things the mere fact that you can create if you so choose the entire Mario series (2D versions) and all the Mario Kart tracks (& carts) within those two games simply makes them better.

I mean they made a shooter in LBP2 that is just amazing. Furthermore the entire Play Create Share thing Sony has going flips genres on their heads. It managed to turn Infamous 2 into a endless superhero game.

If I enjoyed the default way that Sackboy handled then I'd agree with the OP, but since I don't, it doesn't even seem productive to compare them as platformers.

Mario is great at what it does, platforming. LPB is great at what it does, being a creative toolkit.

If you'd take the time to play Little Big Planet or Modnation you'd know the appeal and what people are talking about. They really are fantastic games that turn both genres upside down.

I'm not going to get into arguing peoples opinions but you could spend every second of the rest of your life playing Little Big Planet and all the community content and you'd die before you played everything.

I think people like you have an emotional connection to Mario and that's the main reason they will hold it in higher regard. It's really not based on merit so much as its based off memories.

If you could play each game in a vacuum and remove your bias you'd probably have a much different opinion.

It should go without saying that Quantity != Quality though. No question that there's some high quality stuff on LPB, but telling A Sandwich that it could play it forever isn't really indicative for how good or bad it is.

We've seen fighting games and FPS's created in LPB, but noone's going to say say "that's it, I don't need Street Fighter or CoD/BF now, I'm all set for life".

Except the good stuff is what I'm talking about. If you tried to play literally everything it'd probably take 1,000 years.

Also, implying that LBP content is of a lower quality because there is a lot of it is unfair. Because you are piling it all together. LBP gives you both quality and quantity.

No one is making the argument that LBP will or should replace FPS & fight games so that's a straw man argument. Compare apples to apples.

LBP is just so much fun and because of the community the fun never stops ... It's a platform with an infinite amount of free DLC.

My argument is that there is no apples to apples comparison for LBP, however. Sure, it's default gameplay is in the same vein as Mario, but that's not where it gets its all its critical praise. It's the platform and creativity available for it where it shines (and which everyone points to), and by that end it stops being productive to bother comparing regular platformers to LBP.

If you want to compare LBP to Mario Mano a Mano or Apples to Apples, you either have to ignore the create/share aspects of LBP or find a Mario that also attempts to do the same thing. Beyond that you're talking Apples to Oranges

I ended up gutting my CE and trading the game in after a handful of hours screwing around with it. The bookends are pretty cheapo when you compare them to, say Mortal Kombat's, but they still look pretty cool propping up my games. The Sackboy is pretty awesome, though not as exclusive as I was led to believe: http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/plush/d2af/

Not enough money to get a PS3... :( I could wait until Sony droops the price down to $250 or less, but that isn't happening anytime soon.

Hopefully the PS Vita version will be just as robust.

Question: Has anyone played the PSP version of LBP? Is the level editor as full-featured as the console version?

@tendoboy1984 The PSP version of LBP... sucks. It's only got two layers, you can't sticker your sackboy, there isn't even an ability to just flip an object, you have to re-make it facing the other way. But, the PS Vita version will have 3 layers, all the create tools from LBP 2, and some very nice abilities, so don't compare any PS Vita games to PSP games. A PSP was more-so a mini PS2, whereas the PS Vita will be a mini PS3, with the ability to do much much more than the PSP ever could

I never picked up LBP2 because I had purchased 1 for the multiplayer, and it was impossible to play (with friends at least) due to horrible lag. Does LBP2 have that same problem, or did they ever fix it for 1?

@Player1

They fixed it for 1, they ended up giving the servers a major overhaul. And 2 is even better, I experience lag on occasion but it's nothing that really bothers me. You should pick it up, it's definitely the best multiplayer experience. It's also worth finding some friends online that are somewhat adept at the creation tools. You can learn a lot from other players. Me and my friends will jump into create and without realizing it we'll have been playing for almost 5 hours just messing around.
