Zoom in on these SpyParty Joystiq E3 meetup stats
19
Playing SpyParty at the Joystiq E3 2011 reader meetup may have been a lot of fun, but it was also serious business. As it turns out, attendees were not only having a good time; they were helping SpyParty developer Chris Hecker collect some important data. During our roughly three hour shindig, only 10 spies were shot during the 35 games that were completed. This confirms our long-held suspicion that Joystiq readers are indeed a crafty bunch.
Hecker also tracked the location and direction of the sniper's laser sight, though he notes he doesn't quite know what to do with the data just yet. At the very least, it looks like the snipers were a busy bunch. Pore over lots more data over at the SpyParty site.

I'm kinda surprised it was only 10. Is that moreso a function of crafty spies, or the AI partygoer motions/movements being well done and not sticking out like a sore thumb? Been really interested in hearing about this and was wondering if it'd actually hold up as an enjoyable playable experience.
You play, Richard? If so, how'd you do?

@MarkezJM It's mostly just that there were only 35 games played that night, so 10 just means 29% Sniper kills. I talk about the slight Spy bias in the blog post (I'm also counting the Spy running out of time for the Sniper right now, which brings the total to 37%). I'm testing some tutorializing techniques that give the Spy a slight advantage in the early games as part of the playtests. There's more info in the post.

You could, of course, have argued that we are a crafty bunch if 30 spies were shot, no? I mean, both sides are trying to be crafty.
Panderer! ;)

I played this at the meetup, and first, it's aces, and second it seems like the disadvantage snipers seemed to have was very much due to the environment of new players, not knowing what to look for. It's pretty straightforward to go about your objectives as a spy, and even if you don't, by the time the timer approaches zero, the sniper will usually panic and shoot anyone - this wouldn't be a problem for those with more experience, I imagine.

Wish I hadn't wasted my time playing this at E3.

@Tihn Hi there, I don't actually think you played the game at E3, I think you're just trolling. You posted similar comments in the previous SpyParty E3 post (http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/e3-reader-meetup-spyparty/), implying you've played it and didn't like it (plus some bonus general anti-indie nonsense), but now you're saying you played it at E3. I watched all of the games, took pictures of most of the playsessions, and talked to the people who played, and I'm guessing you weren't one of them.
I'm 100% okay with people not liking the game if they've played it, and feedback is super useful, but posting troll comments without having played the game is pretty weak.
If you can, come to PAX West this year and actually give it a try, and if you still hate it, post away. If you do end up hating it, it would also be helpful to post what you didn't like about it, since well-thought-out criticism is very valuable.
Thanks!

What's up with the two shot lines that seem to miss the room entirely?
