Bob Hoskins is not the biggest Super Mario Bros. fan

In a recent interview with Guardian, legendary actor Bob Hoskins went on record about the highlights of his prestigious cinematic career. In one section of the quickfire Q&A, Hoskins talked about one of his greatest film achievements to date:

"What is the worst job you've done?
Super Mario Brothers.

What has been your biggest disappointment?
Super Mario Brothers.

If you could edit your past, what would you change?
I wouldn't do Super Mario Brothers."

We're having trouble comprehending why Hoskins is so hostile towards Cinergi Pictures' 1993 blockbuster -- we think it set the bar for video game-to-movie adaptations. It just set that bar very, very low. Like, low enough for Street Fighter to hurdle over with grace and ease, which is saying something.

I honestly enjoyed the SMB movie. Yes, it was VERY loosely based on the games, but it's still fun to watch.

I agree. I even have the DVD. It's not "OMG terrible". It's still fun to watch for the cheese factor, and those awesome rocket boots.

I wonder if John Luigi-zamo sees this as a highlight to his film career.

I remember he was being interviewed for some movie and he was asked about Super Mario Bros. He stared at the host with one of those I-told-you-not-to-bring-that-up looks. The host brought the movie up a few times & John would just put up a fake smile.
I think it was an Empire or Ice Age interview.

@captplut9465 With Dennis Hopper's account as evidence, I'm going to go with the directors treating everyone like crap.

"It was a nightmare, very honestly, that movie. It was a husband-and-wife directing team who were both control freaks and wouldn't talk before they made decisions. Anyway, I was supposed to go down there for five weeks, and I was there for 17. It was so over budget. But I bought a couple buildings down there in Wilmington, NC, and I started painting. I made an art studio out of one."

@SynthOno That article really makes me miss Dennis Hopper.

@iamchopsticks considering that he's a pretty successful standup comic that really got started thanks to that movie, probably not. The last special I watched with him, he did mention it as a former ex saying "....and Mario Bros. sucked!" during an argument.

Can you blame him.

I imagine the David O. Russell Uncharted movie would've made a similar amount of sense.

Everyone bashes this movie and says it sucks, I thought it was so goofy and stupid that it was awesome.
I think he was a great addition to the movie, and it's sad that he thinks so low about it. There's many other movies in his career that sucked worse.. I mean hell he had a voice in Garfield :P

Yeah, Postal was one of Uwe Boll's better receieved films. It was meant to be (somewhat) good at what it did: senseless, stupid comedy violence.

@EgoPoisoning never-the-less, they are in fact video games made into movies whether we all like it or not just like super Mario bros. The majority where bad adaptions into movies just like super Mario bros. Hey just because our old pal uwe made those video game movies, they are in fact for the most part video game movies

only movie listed here that I think might have killed its franchise. The cartoon might have put the nail in it's coffin even though I watched every episode. I'd love a good co-op return of Jimmy and Billy(think those are the right names). They could follow it with Battletoads...

@ShadowXIII The worst thing about the Wing Commander movie was there was no excuse for the suck, because Chris Roberts who created Wing Commander wrote and directed it! He must have discovered some good/bad drugs right before he started on the film.

I liked both SMB and Street Fighter even bought Street fighter on bluray. I think they are fun movies to watch and I don't get bored during them.
I also liked the Dead or Alive movie.
I didn't like Double Dragon though thought it was stupid.

I've always wondered what it would be like to watch this back-to-back with Blue Velvet on LSD. Frank Booth would go from "terrifying" to "**** IN YOUR SOUL terrifying".

It was goofy and stupid but honestly....how else are you gonna have an over the top italian and his buddy save a princess from a dinosaur. Honestly?
